Volume 2 Chapter 8 Nakagaito’s coach is very strict

So, after school, Namiki-san, Nakagaito, and I decided to practice volleyball together.
”Well, maybe we should practice passing a lot?”
I suggested, and Namiki-san agreed with a nod, but Nakagaito looked confused.
”Again? Have you two been practicing alone?”
”Uh, yeah, just a little during lunch break.”
I replied, and Nakagaito seemed a little unhappy and said,
”Hmm, I see… Then why don’t you two show me how much you’ve improved with passing?”
”Okay, Namiki-san, should we do it?”
”Yes, sure, I understand.”
Just like during lunch break, we caught the ball in an overpass position.
Well, I think we’ve improved quite a bit compared to yesterday. The ball doesn’t go in the wrong direction anymore, and our passing speed is okay.
Nakagaito looks at it and says,
”Hmm, well, it seems to have gotten better a little. But it’s not very practical, so how about changing the way you do it?”
Namiki-san and I look at each other and decide to listen to Nakagaito’s explanation for now.
”What do you mean by changing the way we do it?”
”I’ll throw the ball to you, and you try to hit it back to me with your head like in soccer.”
Namiki-san looks confused at Nakagaito’s words.
”U-using my head?”
”Yes, by the way, in volleyball, using your head or feet to hit the ball is not considered a foul. But I’m not suggesting you do that in a real game. By practicing hitting the ball with your head without using your hands and being able to return it to the other team, you can reduce the fear of the ball and improve your ability to face it directly.”
I agree with Nakagaito’s explanation by nodding.
”I see, that makes sense. If you try to hit the ball with your head, you definitely need to hit it right in the middle of the ball.”
”So that’s how it is. Well then, I’ll throw the ball a bit to the side, and you two hit it back to me.”
”Okay. I’ll do my best.”
I nodded, agreeing with Namiki-san.
”Got it. We’re ready.”
We stepped back a bit from Nakagaito.
”Alright, here we go! Starting with Hata-kun!”
”Yeah!”
Nakagaito tossed the ball, and it went slightly to my right.
Okay… I’ll stand right in front of the ball…
”Ouch!”
I tried to hit it back, but it accidentally hit my face.
”You’re a bit clumsy. What happened there?”
”Oops, sorry. I guess I should have bent my knee and hit it.”
”In volleyball, using your elbow and knee is crucial for passing. Especially when controlling the ball with an overpass, you need to flex and extend your knee.”
”So it’s the same even with an overpass, huh?”
”That’s what I mean.”
And Nakagaito said to Namiki-san.
”I’ll go too.”
”Yes, yes!”
She threw the ball with a whoosh.
”Ei!”
Namiki-san skillfully hit the ball back with her head.
”Yeah, that’s the feeling.”
”Thank you very much.”
Nakagaito, who used to be jealous and bother Namiki, now seemed to be good friends. It was a relief.
And I’m really thankful that she taught us how to stand in front of the ball and control it with my knees.
Well, the method is quite strict, though.
