A Lump in the Heart
“Special Reason?”
This answer was something Yukinoshita Yukino had never considered.
She bit her lips, realizing that Kitagami Yoru’s sudden change was due to the inappropriate words she spoke.
She always thought that Kitagami Yoru’s weight gain was simply from overeating, laziness, and unwillingness to exercise.
She hadn’t considered there might be another reason behind it.
Yukinoshita Yukino didn’t press for more information, but instead coughed lightly and frantically turned her thoughts elsewhere.
She wanted to say something to Kitagami Yoru to divert his attention.
“Ahem…that…how’s your cat doing?”
“You mean San-san?”
Yukinoshita Yukino turned her head to look at Kitagami Yoru’s profile, speaking softly, afraid of upsetting him.
However, as soon as she thought about the cat, she felt a strange envy towards the “fat otaku” in front of her.
“Such good luck?”
He could easily find a cat as adorable as Ai/Love.
Sometimes, when she encountered stray cats and tried to pet them, they would run away from her.
“It’s doing well, has gained some weight…”
“You really like cats, Yukinoshita Yukino?”
Kitagami Yoru nodded lightly in response.
“Yeah, but I can’t keep one in my apartment, it’s a bit of a pity.” Yukinoshita Yukino let out a sigh of relief.
“I live in an apartment too? What kind of trashy apartment is that?”
Kitagami Yoru thought to himself, with no intention of discussing it with Yukinoshita Yukino.
A few minutes later, the train arrived at their stop.
Yukinoshita Yukino stood up and after politely bidding farewell, she left the train.
“It seems like she lives close to school; only one stop away.”
Kitagami Yoru watched as Yukinoshita Yukino left the train car.
Around 5:30 pm, Kitagami Yoru returned to his apartment.
He saw Gabriel talking with a girl in a Shuichiin Academy uniform outside her house and greeted them.
“This is my classmate, Vignette.”
“And this is my neighbor and friend, Kitagami Yoru.”
Gabriel introduced them both.
“Hello, Vignette.” Kitagami Yoru gave her a casual greeting.
“Hello, Kitagami senpai.” Vignette heard this familiar name and looked at Kitagami Yoru curiously before replying.
But she thought since Gabriel was an angel, she wouldn’t be friends with bad people, so she didn’t worry about it anymore.
“Is there something going on with Gabriel?” Kitagami Yoru took the keys out of his pocket and unlocked the door.
“No, I’m in a hurry to go home. I forgot something, Vignette helped me bring it.” Gabriel smiled a little embarrassedly.
She was rushing home to play games and accidentally forgot her backpack.
It’s really something, forgetting your backpack.
“Then goodbye, see you tomorrow.” Vignette was also supposed to go back, so she waved her hand.
“Bye.” Gabriel waved and didn’t close the door but stood in front of Kitagami Yoru.
“Kitagami-san, do you have time this weekend to go shopping with me?” Gabriel asked with sparkling eyes.
This weekend, Kitagami Yoru had plans with Kato Megumi.
But it wasn’t possible to go shopping for two days in a row, so he agreed.
“Can we go on Friday after school?” Gabriel added.
Although Kitagami Yoru lent her a fun game, she wasn’t interested in playing it for long.
Gabriel wanted to try online games like the popular “Genshin Impact” recently.
“Yeah, I want to play Genshin Impact!”
“Gabriel, are you in a hurry? What do you need?” Kitagami Yoru asked while changing his shoes.
“A computer.”
Gabriel blurted out.
It was more like anticipation than being in a hurry.
Kitagami Yoru shrugged indifferently.
He put on his slippers, closed the door, and walked inside.
In the living room, San-san was lying on the couch, pawing at the air.
Hearing footsteps, it stood up and stared with big eyes, as if welcoming Kitagami Yoru back.
Kitagami Yoru sat down on the living room couch, exhaling deeply with some fatigue on his face.
He turned on the TV, picked up a cat toy from the table, and laughed while stroking San-san’s round body, waving the toy!
“Meow~”
San-san’s eyes flickered and it was immediately attracted!
The cat toy was waved again.
“Meow meow~”
San-san excitedly called out, waving its paws trying to catch the cat toy.
Kitagami Yoru decided to play with San-san for a while.
After some time, San-san was still energetic, but Kitagami Yoru got tired.
It was getting late, so he went to turn on the heater and boil water, then headed to the kitchen to think about dinner.
However, there weren’t many groceries left in the fridge, and it might not last for several days.
“With this gloomy weather, I should go out and buy some stuff before a possible rainstorm hits, so I can avoid ordering online.”
Kitagami Yoru wasn’t wealthy; he tried to save money wherever he could, except for the expenses with Kato Megumi.
The only unnecessary expense he could cut was the cheap can of coffee he bought every day at noon.
Japan’s convenience store culture is second to none; many part-time workers get their meals there because the pre-made bento boxes aren’t that expensive and save time and money compared to cooking.
If they can buy affordable bento boxes, then there’s less need for shopping for groceries.
The places where they buy groceries are limited since convenience stores don’t sell produce, and only some small supermarkets do; you have to go to larger ones to find them.
Kitagami Yoru had to walk to the train station, take a short ride, and head to the nearest supermarket that sells vegetables and meat.
“I got lucky; they started selling discounted items at this time.”
Kitagami Yoru held a shopping basket and saw the supermarket employee putting discount stickers on some bento boxes.
He quickened his pace and headed towards the vegetable section.
During his weight loss period, vegetables could be eaten almost at random.
Kitagami Yoru liked onions, lettuce, and potatoes.
He put two kilograms of each into his own basket and randomly selected a few unfamiliar vegetables, putting them in the basket as well.
The discounted shelves were almost empty.
As he casually picked through them, he came across an empty broccoli shelf where he bumped into Aoyama Nanami.
“Kitagami-san.” Aoyama Nanami was the first to see Kitagami Yoru and called out instinctively.
As her voice fell, she looked at the imposing Kitagami Yoru in front of her, and the words Sora had spoken with her at noon came to mind.
Approaching her with ill intentions, making her let down her guard, giving her food, one day he would drug her.
Originally, Aoyama Nanami had struggled with the idea of ignoring it.
But those words were like a nail driven into wood; even if she pulled them out, there would still be a trace left behind.
And her heart was that wooden board.
“Aoyama-san, are you here for the discounted vegetables too?” Kitagami Yoru glanced at Aoyama Nanami’s basket.
It seems like she arrived late and managed to grab a few bruised cabbages.
Aoyama Nanami nodded absentmindedly.
“Most of the discounted vegetables are gone, but I have some. Would you like any?” Kitagami Yoru asked casually.
“Huh?!”
“No…I don’t want any, thank you…”
Aoyama Nanami was taken aback and quickly shook her head, feeling very conflicted inside.
“Mhm.”
Kitagami Yoru waved his hand and left.
After buying daily necessities, he also bought two boxes of discounted sushi to take home as dinner.
Taking a bath and eating dinner, Kitagami Yoru turned on the desk lamp and flipped through the notes Yukinoshita Yukino had lent him.
It seemed to still hold the scent of the girl.
If he were to sell them, quite a few guys would probably be willing to pay for them, right?
Yukinoshita said that if I could meet the goals in this week-long study plan, I would have a chance of entering the top thirty in the year.
Time passed quickly until it was Friday.
