Chapter 111 Kenneth: As long as we don’t give up, hope will follow the path…

After Noah left, Kenneth sat quietly in the hotel for a day.

He didn’t try to assemble Mana or find a way to repair his Magic Crest, but instead gazed out at the seaside city outside the window.

When he first arrived in Japan, Kenneth thought this region and its people were no different from other cities, just like the people on this island, a group of barbarians who had abandoned European civilization, with their Magecraft and inferior Breath.

But now, he suddenly realized that this place had a unique beauty, different from Britain, and that he had been blinded by his own arrogance at the time.

Have I been thinking this way since I was born?

    Obviously not.

When did I become like this?

Such confusion arose in Kenneth’s mind, as he recalled his conversation with Noah.

Despite having such great Strength, he still had a curiosity like a child when it came to knowledge.

That shining, clear gaze, reminiscent of Gilgamesh, felt familiar to Kenneth.

As he looked back on his life, he discovered that it was the same gaze he had when he first learned Magecraft.

Can a child not be excited when they see objects floating in their hand?

At least, Kenneth couldn’t imagine it.

    But he had changed.

If he had to say when, it was probably when he excitedly showed his Magecraft results to his father, only to be scolded for indulging in such entertainment and losing his way.

Research for the glory of Apollon.

    Learning for his own status.

Fighting for the praise and admiration of others.

But never again out of pure curiosity for the unknown world, and always evaluating everything based on ‘is it useful’.

Perhaps from that time on, Kenneth had already died halfway.

He had become like many people in the world, turning into the parents they hated when they were young.

He realized that the most fearsome Enemy in the world wasn’t death, but the thing that changed people into something they weren’t.

Indeed, only those who could remain unchanged, no matter what they experienced, and wouldn’t be swayed by jealousy, hatred, or arrogance, were worthy of being called Heroes.

No wonder Artoria could get along so well with the other person.

If he had understood these things earlier, could he have gotten along better with King Arthur?

As he sighed and shook his head, Kenneth suddenly felt a surge of Mana approaching.

Apart from his ability to sense Mana not being nullified, the more critical point was that this Mana was exceptionally familiar to Kenneth.

    Waver?

Although the other party was well-concealed, with the talent in Magecraft present, Kenneth could easily discern his presence, like a child distinguishing their parents from the sound of footsteps in a hallway.

Whether or not Waver was involved, Kenneth was going to participate in the Holy Grail War to embellish his resume, but at this moment, he couldn’t help but want to blame his own misfortune on him.

    That brat!

Yet for some reason, amidst the jumble of emotions in Kenneth’s heart, fear was notably absent.

Anyway, Sola-Ui isn’t here; the worst that could happen is death!

Bearing the intense pain, Kenneth mustered a thread of Mana to dispel the Barrier.

This action clearly startled Waver, causing him to retreat in a hurry.

After waiting for more than half an hour, Kenneth watched as the short figure cautiously approached the room.

This sight infuriated Kenneth, making him feel like grabbing a cane to discipline him.

“…Waver Velvet! How long are you going to keep up that despicable demeanor? Get in here!”

Even though he had decided in his heart to defeat Kenneth as an Enemy, a teacher always has a special attack on students.

At the sound of the rebuke, Waver instinctively responded.

    “Yes! Kenneth Teacher!”

By the time he realized it, it was too late; he understood that he had completely exposed himself to Kenneth.

Waver’s face paled as he trembled, but after a long wait with no Offensive Arts striking him, he couldn’t help but peek through squinted eyes.

There, Kenneth sat in front of the large floor-to-ceiling window, regarding him with a look of exasperated disdain.

Although there seemed to be no change from before, Waver felt that something he couldn’t understand had changed about Kenneth.

“Ken, Kenneth Teacher? You, you weren’t…”

Waver started to speak then closed his mouth, still unable to utter the last few words.

“Ambushed by that Magus Assassin bastard? Hah, you were watching, weren’t you?”

Kenneth raised his arm, feeling the intense pain as the Mana flowed through it, and grinned with a somewhat twisted smile.

“Yes, you didn’t see it wrong, I’ve been hit, my Magic Circuit has been completely destroyed, and I can no longer use Magecraft… Cut off the connection? What an impressive Origin, to think of such an attack method, indeed, those who can become famous, even if they’re bastards, have some real skills.”

When Kenneth realized he was enthusiastically thinking about Emiya Kiritsugu’s attack method, he couldn’t help but feel a sense of absurdity.

Waver, on the other hand, was so scared that his legs were trembling, and he almost ran away first.

For any Magus, having their Magic Circuit destroyed and being unable to use Magecraft again is a torture more terrifying than being flayed alive.

    But what did he see?

The Magus who regarded magic as everything, Kenneth, was talking about his Magic Circuit being destroyed with an air of nonchalance?

Waver, who witnessed everything, felt an intense sense of thrill, as if either the world had gone mad or he himself had gone crazy.

Teacher Kenneth, could it be that you’ve gone crazy from the pain of being struck?

Waver was resentful of his Servant, Iskandar (Rider), at that moment.

Although he had said a few more words out of sympathy after seeing Kenneth fall into a pool of blood the previous night, that wasn’t a reason for him to be dragged here, was it?

    Who’s the Master here?!

With a glance, Kenneth knew what Waver was thinking, but this time he didn’t scold him.

“I know what you’re thinking, my Magus career has been destroyed, and I’m resentful enough to want to destroy the world…”

Ah, yes, this is the Kenneth Teacher I know.

Under Waver’s eccentric gaze, Kenneth’s tone changed from gritted teeth to gradual calmness.

“It’s just that I met an individual, a very mysterious person, who made me understand some things, understand how shallow I was before… Waver, I’m sorry.”

Looking at Kenneth, who was already shrouded in the twilight, Waver’s heart was instantly filled with guilt and self-reproach.

To say the least, Waver had often sought guidance from Kenneth, and it was clear that he was a remarkably arrogant yet highly competent Teacher, much like the esteemed mages of the Clock Tower in the world of DanMachi.

The fact that he treated both commoner students and noble students with equal respect, and didn’t intentionally withhold knowledge when teaching, made him a rare gem within the Tower, a true embodiment of the principles of a Heroic Spirit from the Fate series.

Now, seeing him severely injured, Waver, still young at heart, couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of responsibility, much like a Master feeling the weight of their Servant’s well-being in the Holy Grail War.

    “Kenneth, Teacher!”

Although Waver felt embarrassed, tears continued to stream down his face, a sight that would have been familiar to the likes of Hestia from DanMachi, who valued the bonds between people.

“It’s all my fault… if only I had been more self-aware… if I hadn’t participated in this Holy Grail War, Kenneth, you wouldn’t… you shouldn’t apologize, that thesis was indeed…”

Watching Waver cry, Kenneth furrowed his brow, much like a concerned Gilgamesh from Fate, who valued strength above all else.

“This is my own choice, and it’s not for you to bear… but I think you might be misunderstanding something. I apologized for not pointing out your foolishness in a more suitable way, not because I think you’re not foolish.”

Waver’s sobbing stopped abruptly, and with tears still in his eyes, he looked at Kenneth in confusion, much like a lost adventurer in the dungeons of Orario.

    “…Huh?”

Completely disregarding the possibility that Waver might summon a Servant to kill him at any moment, Kenneth showed blatant disdain, a look that would have been at home on the face of a noble from the world of Type-Moon.

“Rather, I now have a more precise understanding of your foolishness… not only are you delusional, but your eyes seem to be poor as well.”

His face burning as if it had been set on fire, Waver’s lips curled into a snarl, a look of determination reminiscent of a hero from the Fate series, “I’m a clown, after all!”

    “You! What did you say?!”

As Waver charged forward, Kenneth merely looked at him with contempt, his pale voice rising again, a tone that would have been fitting for a character like Zelretch from the Nasuverse.

“Am I wrong? You think you can make up for your lack of Bloodline with clever magic, but people with such talent are as rare as winning the lottery. Perhaps, after a hundred years, when the foundation of Modern Magecraft is established, it might be possible, but for now…”

Kenneth raised his arm, examining the Magic Crests within that had been severely damaged, a scene that would have been at home in the world of magic from the Fate series.

“A Magus is a being that advances towards the Root, building upon the achievements of their predecessors, generation after generation. Even if it takes a long time, even if the family line might be cut off due to unexpected circumstances, we won’t stop,” a sentiment that echoed the determination of characters like Kiritsugu Emiya from the Fate series.

Seemingly noticing something, Kenneth lowered his arm, looked forward, and let out a deep sigh, a moment of introspection that would have been fitting for a character from the world of Type-Moon.

Normally, an ordinary person cannot become a designated seal’s Monster, and it’s difficult to reach the starting position in their lifetime.

Waver was furious, about to refute Kenneth, but was suddenly knocked flying by Iskandar (Rider), who appeared behind him.

“Not bad, not bad! Waver’s Teacher, I didn’t know you had such spirit!”

Iskandar (Rider) swung his cloak, picked up Waver, who was knocked into a daze, and shook him twice.

However, this only made Waver, who was already seeing stars, even more dizzy.

“A dream, like a conquest, requires unwavering determination that transcends life and death; this kid just doesn’t understand that.”

Kenneth sized up the burly man in front of him and puckered his lips.

“The Conqueror? Perhaps it’s a good thing Waver stole that Holy Relic from me; if I had summoned you, you would have probably killed me immediately.”

Giving up on rousing Waver, Iskandar (Rider) tossed him onto a nearby bed and sat down beside Kenneth.

“Oh? I think we get along quite well, don’t you?”

With a smile, Kenneth didn’t continue the conversation, instead closing his eyes as if reminiscing about something, before opening them again after a while.

“So, are you going to kill me now?”

Iskandar (Rider) stroked his rough beard, clearly deep in thought.

“Well, it seems there’s no need to do that, but you do give me a sense of threat; I feel like you’ll be a threat to this kid.”

Just as the atmosphere was becoming tense, a mana fluctuation from afar caught the attention of both men.

    “Saber?”

“There are 4 Servants in that direction?”

    *

A fierce battle was unfolding in front of the Matou residence.

    “Noah, sorry!!”

Artoria charged forward, wielding the Invisible Holy Sword, each step leaving deep cracks on the ground.

Although her parameters had decreased due to her Master changing from Kenneth to Sola-Ui, Saber still had extremely high parameters.

Noah raised his sword and easily parried the attack, but the residual Sword Qi still shattered the outer walls of the Matou residence.

“Hey, can you guys take this somewhere else? It’s going to be expensive to repair the damage!”

Despite his words, Noah didn’t hold back, unleashing a powerful slash.

    “Clang…!”

With sparks flying, Artoria was forced to retreat several meters before barely stabilizing her stance, leaving behind 2 deep, long grooves in the concrete.

    This… Monster!

Feeling her numbed arm, Artoria’s heart was filled with conflict.

She had been leading Noah away when she suddenly received a Command from Sola-Ui to launch an Offensive Arts against Noah, at least to hold her back.

Although she felt some displeasure, Artoria did not choose to resist.

Just a few minutes of combat had left her feeling extremely stifled.

The gap in Noble Phantasms was still unclear, but Artoria acknowledged that she was no longer a match for Noah.

If not for numerical superiority, she probably really had no way to deal with Noah.

After forcing Artoria to retreat, Noah did not choose to pursue but instead dodged a Lancer’s piercing void and crossed paths with Scáthach.

With no time to draw her sword, Noah threw a punch.

Scáthach, unable to dodge, instead braced her spear to receive the punch and used the opportunity to retreat.

“Hey! Have you Masters made some dirty, unmentionable deal? Weren’t you trying to kill each other yesterday? When did you start teaming up?”

Watching Artoria and Scáthach disperse, Noah glanced at the half-destroyed Matou mansion behind her and couldn’t help but feel a bit of helplessness.

Before, fighting in someone else’s house didn’t feel like much, but fighting in her own home, it really hurt to see it damaged!

She could only think, fortunately, she had already transferred Asagami Fujino and the others to the Ryūdō Temple.

Now, even if it pained her, she could only face it head-on!

In a distant corner, Tohsaka Tokiomi, using the Magecraft Tool provided by Kotomine Kirei, was remotely observing the battle.

Hearing Noah’s words, he couldn’t help but have a strange look on his face.

Although Magi were people who could abandon everything for benefits, it was indeed rare for enemies at night to join forces by day.

However, it was understandable if it was to eliminate this powerful Servant.

I just hope no one else shows up… I wouldn’t want to end up in a police station again…

Just as Tohsaka Tokiomi was pondering this, the battlefield suddenly shimmered with golden light.
