Chapter 30 A smile won’t disappear, it will just…
“BOOM…”
The sunlight slowly streamed down, symbolizing the church bells ringing throughout Orario.
In a corner of Twilight Manor’s courtyard, Ais stopped swinging her wooden sword and wiped the fine sweat from her porcelain forehead.
Gazing at the azure sky, Ais ended her day of wooden sword training.
She walked towards the dormitory area, preparing to take a shower before breakfast to wash away the sweat.
Along the way, Ais glanced at the wooden sword in her hand.
Although the material was taken from special wood found in the Dungeon, it was as hard and heavy as a metal sword, but it was still…
“I want, a sword…”
I want a better sword, a sturdier sword, a sharper sword, a sword that can slay enemies…
A sword that wouldn’t harm myself, and wouldn’t harm enemies.
However, when the image of the Elf Princess’s delicate yet imposing face, filled with a demonic aura, flashed in her mind, Ais, who hadn’t even shivered in the cold wind, suddenly trembled, suppressing this idea with all her might.
The incident of angering Riveria in the Dungeon last time hadn’t been forgiven yet.
Asking for a new sword now would probably only result in a severe punishment from the ‘Alf Fist of Justice’.
It’s better to train hard and attend classes, and once Riveria calms down, then ask her.
With this in mind, Ais finished her shower and headed to the mess hall.
Breakfast was vegetable soup, mille-feuille, toast, and apple pie.
Ais ate a lot, even gnawing on the carrots in the vegetable salad.
For growth, she needed to get enough nourishment.
The familiar sweet taste of the Demeter Familia’s special dish filled Ais’s mouth.
She couldn’t help but recall Noah.
Recalling his appearance, recalling his swordsmanship, recalling his cooking skills…
True enough, Noah was a better cook.
But, Ais looked around and couldn’t find the silver-haired figure within the Familia.
Five days had passed since Noah joined the Familia, but besides the initial welcome dinner and the second day’s morning training, Ais hadn’t seen him again.
However, Ais was able to get some relevant information from Riveria, which seemed to be receiving treatment at Dian Cecht Familia.
It’s not that she took the initiative to investigate, but that Riveria would take the initiative to say it.
Whenever Riveria comes back from outside Twilight Manor and teaches Ais, she is always covered in a cold Breath that is daunting to others.
And saying things like “big men shouldn’t be afraid of hardship,” “you dare to slack off,” and “you’re nagging like an old lady,” Ais couldn’t understand, yet somehow felt a sense of familiarity with the words.
When Riveria gave her a cold, resentful stare, Ais curled up and let out a pitiful “Waaaah” after which she realized why the words sounded so familiar.
Weren’t those the exact same words Riveria used to scold her with back then?
So, Noah had also gotten on Riveria’s bad side, huh?
Ais’s feelings became a bit complicated as she thought about it – a sense of novelty that even the usually mature and composed Noah could be mischievous too.
Riveria had started taking care of someone else, even though Ais was the first one to arrive… a feeling of loss.
On the bright side, Riveria’s attention had been diverted… a sense of relief.
But the bad news was that Riveria’s resentment hadn’t dissipated; instead, it had grown stronger and was now directed at Ais herself.
Had she done anything wrong these past few days, though?.. a feeling of grievance.
The layered emotions Ais felt were more complicated than a stack of pancakes, even.
With these confusing thoughts, Ais finished her breakfast and headed to the library in Twilight Manor.
The air was filled with the smell of old wood and paper, and the tall bookshelves were lined up, packed with various books.
Inside, aside from the valuable books about the Dungeon and World History, used Grimoires, and Astrologer’s Handbooks, there were also old books collected by the Chief Deity and members based on their interests, Heroic Epics, and newspaper clippings.
To get Riveria to forgive her quickly and allow herself to obtain a powerful sword, Ais had been diligently completing her assignments.
However, when she entered the library, she saw an unexpected person at the desk and couldn’t help but let out a surprised cry.
“No, Noah?”
At the desk, Noah let out a yawn and waved at Ais with a sleepy expression.
“Good morning, Ais.”
Noah’s overly casual demeanor made Ais feel like she had overreacted.
“Morning, good morning.”
Ais unconsciously replied and wanted to ask more, but it seemed like the moment had passed, so she sat down across from Noah instead.
Her intention to finish her assignments early was forgotten, replaced by a multitude of questions.
Fearing she’d forget to thank Noah, like last time, until bedtime, Ais couldn’t help but open her mouth.
“Uh, Noah.”
“Hmm?”
“What are you doing… here?”
At this, Noah gave a deadpan stare, her eyes going dull, like a fish out of water – a classic “dead fish eye” expression.
“Because it was too torturous at the clinic, I told Riveria I’m coming to class to take a break.”
Airmid is indeed Airmid, despite her young age, her medical skills are top-notch, and she customized a full treatment plan for Noah.
These days, Noah’s treatment has included, but not limited to, having his crooked bones broken and reattached, having his misplaced muscles cut open and resewn, and being steamed in a sealed wooden barrel with medicine…
If Noah could still accept those, the various medicines that were sour, astringent, bitter, spicy, fishy, and smelly were really making him want to vomit, his soul felt like it was going to fly out!
If he didn’t genuinely feel his body recovering and strengthening, he would absolutely not have endured that suffering!
So, after the treatment was basically over, and all that was left was the recovery period, Noah finally couldn’t resist the urge to run away, but he didn’t succeed, and every time he tried, Airmid precisely intercepted him.
After begging Riveria many times, Noah was finally able to enjoy Airmid’s amazing healing magic and was discharged from the clinic.
Isn’t learning magic just that?
Could it be more painful than drinking those soul-crushing liquids?
That’s what Noah thought.
In the future, he must reformulate those medicines to make them as delicious as juice!
“Rest, rest…”
After hearing Noah say that, Ais couldn’t help but slightly open her mouth in surprise.
Remembering Riveria’s teaching style, with her super Spartan and strict expression, Ais just couldn’t associate classes with rest.
Could even this kind of training be considered rest for Noah?
Indeed, I still have a long way to go!
Unaware of the complex expression on Ais’s face, Noah was still feeling carefree, sensing the strength bursting out from his body after the treatment.
However, this carefree feeling disappeared after several massive books, thicker than bricks, were heavily dropped in front of him.
“Ri, Riveria? What are these?”
Noah looked at the stack of books on the desk, which was even taller than himself, and trembled as he looked at Riveria.
“Just the introductory books for the magic class, what’s wrong, do you think there are too many?”
Feeling Riveria’s cold and merciless gaze, and thinking about the taste of the medicines at the clinic, Noah swallowed hard and shook his head.
“No, not too many.”
“Good that you don’t think so, because these are just the catalog and introduction,”
Under Noah’s stunned gaze, Riveria smiled faintly, emitting a rose-like, charming yet dangerous aura.
She pointed to a corner of the bookshelf, where there were several rows of bookshelves with at least a few hundred large books.
“Those, are the real deal.”
Seeing Noah completely frozen, Ais next to him couldn’t hold it in any longer and burst out laughing.
Then…
“Laughing? That’s funny?”
Riveria’s gaze locked onto Ais, and her smile vanished.
