Chapter 44 Ryu: Why are you so adept at this?
Whenever Noah looked into the eyes of the elf in his arms, as they fluttered open to reveal a sky-blue gaze filled with innocence, he couldn’t shake the overwhelming sense of déjà vu.
Is this child alright?
Why do you keep staring at me like that?
Did you get your brain addled by another Explosion spell?
Hey, why did I say ‘another’?
Thankfully, the blonde elf quickly came to her senses.
Noah could tell because her eyes suddenly widened, focusing intently on his face.
Next, the soft, delicate waist in his hands suddenly tensed up.
In fact, the elf’s entire body went stiff, like a salted fish so hard it could be used to chop someone.
That’s when Noah felt a sudden heat at his back, a nagging sense of unease creeping into his mind.
He knew it was that skill of his, the one with a powerful intuition for danger, sounding the alarm.
Have I overlooked something again?
A monster?
Instinctively, Noah scanned his surroundings.
The long hall, once made of pale stone, was now mostly charred black, the ground littered with large patches of amber-colored sandstone melted into a crystalline state.
Here and there, flames danced, adding an otherworldly and mysterious beauty to the scene.
A fierce wind whipped up a scorching heat wave that lashed against his skin, the intense heat distorting the light and shadows around him.
Without a doubt, the master of that floor had vanished in the explosion, not even a speck of dust left behind.
And there didn’t seem to be any other monsters around?
After a thorough check, Noah’s gaze returned to the elf in his arms.
That’s when he saw her pale cheeks visibly reddening!
“Hey, are you hurt anywhere?”
Could it be internal injuries?
Alarmed, Noah used his sword hand to support the elf’s waist while his other hand carefully felt around her body.
Although his touch was light, the strange sensations from her waist, legs, and belly made Ryu feel like she was dying.
You, you jerk!
Don’t just grope around!
She screamed inwardly, her blood seemed to rush to her head, her cheeks and ears burning red, her heartbeat racing as if it might leap from her chest.
Dizzy and disoriented, she couldn’t find the strength in her thighs to her fingertips.
Wh, why is this happening?
Hit him!
My accursed elf instincts, always getting me into trouble!
Just when I could actually put them to use, why do I have to mess up at a crucial moment?
But no matter how much Ryu scolded herself in her mind, her body seemed to deliberately defy her, fundamentally refusing to obey.
Her legs completely gave out, causing Ryu to fall forward and bury her face in Noah’s chest.
This is bad!
As her pupils dilated, Riu desperately tried to hold her breath, but it was too late.
The faint, sweet scent that had been subtly noticeable in her breathing technique suddenly became rich and intense, accompanied by the warmth of another person’s body, flooding her nostrils.
And then…
Nothing happened.
But her body reacted in a completely unexpected way, leaving Riu feeling perplexed.
However, upon closer inspection, Riu realized that it wasn’t entirely accurate to say that nothing had happened.
For instance, her rapid heartbeat, which had been on the verge of exploding, gradually slowed down.
The countless anxious, painful, and frustrating thoughts that had threatened to overwhelm her mind also dissipated, replaced by a sense of calm and comfort that even made Riu feel a bit drowsy.
It was as if she were lying on a wooden bed in a forest on a summer afternoon, listening to the soothing sound of wind chimes and the gentle flow of water, with the distant hum of cicadas and birdsong.
She felt like taking a nap right then and there…
No, no, no!
Not here, not now, and not with this person!
As she felt herself getting sleepy, Riu quickly bit down on her tongue to wake herself up.
Although it hurt and made her eyes well up with tears, she managed to regain her composure and control over her body.
And then, she became aware of the touch on her waist and lower back again.
However, this time Riu was much more calm and collected.
“Um, could you please stop touching me? I’m not hurt.”
As she spoke, Riu was surprised by her own calm tone.
Noah hesitated, then released his grip on the elf’s waist and took 2 steps back, allowing them to lock eyes once more.
The elf’s sky-blue eyes, similar to his own, were clear and moist, reflecting his own image.
But as Noah realized he was being stared at, his heart skipped a beat.
He also realized what he had overlooked earlier.
Elves generally had a strong aversion to being touched, a trait that was deeply ingrained in their culture.
Many conflicts and bloody incidents involving elves had been sparked by outsiders disregarding this custom.
Just like the time Noah had been on the receiving end of an elf’s Fist of Justice…
It was perhaps the most memorable injury he had sustained since arriving in this world.
And now, it seemed he had gone even further than before.
Looking down, Noah examined his palms, then glanced at the elf girl’s waist.
As he lifted his head again, Noah’s expression had become extremely rigid.
An unsettling silence enveloped Bell, as she pondered whether to speak up, but just as she opened her mouth…
“Stay calm!”
Noah suddenly took a step back, retreated, crouched, and covered her head, leaving Bell wide-eyed and bewildered, BOOM!
Fortunately, Bell regained some of her strength, preventing her from stumbling.
Once she steadied herself, she gazed at the silver-haired Swordsman crouching before her, and the words she had intended to say were swallowed once more.
“Sir, what are you doing?”
The anticipated Elven counterattack never came, and Noah slowly lifted her head.
“You, you’re not going to hit me?”
The brave Swordsman, capable of taking down a Goliath, now looked like a mischievous little boy, peeking out with an air of trepidation.
The stark contrast struck a chord in Bell, dispelling her peculiar thoughts and leaving her on the verge of laughter.
However, she bit her lip, forcing herself to maintain a stern expression.
“Why would I hit you? You’re my lifesaver, aren’t you?”
Confirming that Bell had no intention of attacking, Noah let out a sigh of relief and stood up, shaking her head.
“Good, I thought Elves would hit people even if they were just touched, ouch.”
…Actually, I almost hit you.
Bell felt a pang of guilt, averting her gaze as her face grew warm.
Clutching her limp, weakened hand, she sensed the lingering sensation on her skin, and her mind wrestled with the feeling.
I, I somehow felt a bit comfortable, am I really that shameless of an Elf?
As the soothing aroma dissipated, Bell once again succumbed to intense self-loathing and disgust, her brain and cheeks burning with embarrassment, her vision blurring.
No, no, without that soothing scent, I won’t be able to calm down…
Just as Bell was about to collapse due to her own inept nature…
…Huh?
A sudden intuition drew Bell’s attention to a place she shouldn’t have noticed.
She regained her composure, silently gazing at Noah.
“Why are you so skilled?”
“Huh?”
“Have you, touched many Elves before?”
Noah saw Bell’s once-clear, sky-blue pupils lose focus, transforming into deep, dark voids, like bottomless pits, ZIP!
