Chapter 49 Ais: Why are you so strong?

    Early morning.

The world was hushed, the fields were still, and even the chirping of birds could not be heard, with only a hint of pink dawn visible in the eastern sky.

The chilly wind carried a hint of dampness, making the cold seep deeper into the bones.

Yawning, Noah walked out with his sword.

As he entered the courtyard, he met Ais, who was standing in the garden, staring blankly with her sword in hand.

    “Noah~~”

The blonde girl looked up at him with soft, ethereal vocals that seemed to drift away in the cold wind, matching her slender and petite frame.

    “Ais, you’re really diligent.”

Approaching Ais, Noah, still half asleep, couldn’t help but reach out and scratch the small head in front of him, which was perfectly positioned and sized.

Mmm, the head was small, and the hair was silky, just like a kitten, feeling great to touch.

“When I was your age, I wouldn’t get up until noon in the winter.”

Completely caught off guard by Noah’s action, Ais felt the sensation on her head, her eyes widening in surprise, her mouth agape.

To be honest, it felt ticklish and comfortable, making Ais want to close her eyes, stand on her tiptoes, and nuzzle her head against Noah’s hand.

However, after a moment of hesitation, Ais bit her lip, took a few steps back, and dodged Noah’s hand.

If it were before, being touched by Noah, who took care of her like an older brother, wouldn’t have been a big deal for Ais.

Moreover, Noah had a pleasant and comforting scent that Ais liked.

But last night, she had promised to be Noah’s wife, so she couldn’t act like a little girl anymore.

Although thinking about the implications of being a wife made Ais’ face heat up with shyness…

    But!

Since she had already made the promise, and Noah hadn’t objected, even showing her his Falna values, it was clear he had accepted.

    So she couldn’t back down!

A wife should act like a wife!

The empty sensation in his palm brought Noah back to reality.

Seeing the hint of resistance on Ais’ face, Noah realized his earlier action was somewhat inappropriate.

Whoa, already worrying about the differences between men and women at the age of 8 or 9?

Girls really do mature early; at that age, he didn’t understand anything.

However, women, regardless of age, are all the same…can’t even touch their heads, and yet she says she wants to be his wife.

Noah hadn’t taken Ais’ words from yesterday seriously, thinking it was just a childish outburst.

In the past, many girls had said they wanted to marry him when they grew up, but Noah couldn’t imagine himself living a long life with someone, raising children together.

So, he would tease them a bit when they became old enough to feel embarrassed about it.

But the girl in front of him, although also young…

Glancing at Ais, Noah abandoned the dangerous thoughts in his mind.

Although Ais’s flushed face and her shy grip on her skirt were amusing, the thought of her rolling on the ground or wildly swinging her sword was not a pretty picture.

The rumors from yesterday were probably still buzzing, and Noah didn’t want to add fuel to the gossip fire.

“Noah, are you going to the Dungeon today?”

After thinking for a few seconds, under Ais’s hopeful gaze, Noah chose to shake his head.

“I shouldn’t go today; at least not in the morning. I need to visit the Dian Cecht Familia later, and I have to deal with Magic Stones and drops. More importantly, the Goliath won’t respawn for at least half a month. The monsters in the upper levels aren’t worth my time compared to training myself, so I might consider taking a few days to head down to the lower levels.”

Hearing about the lower levels, Ais immediately looked disappointed, her head drooping as if she had a pair of Orc-like ears that would droop down.

Not to mention that she had just angered Riveria again yesterday; even if she were a dutiful daughter, she would never allow herself to enter the lower levels.

Riveria wouldn’t allow it, and neither would Loki, Finn, or Gres.

“But even if I want to find time to train, I don’t know where to go now. I would disturb others in Twilight Manor…”

Following Noah’s gaze, Ais lifted her head and saw the city wall to the north.

“Noah, do you want to go up on the wall?”

“Hmm, I guess so. It seems like a good place for training, but it might not be convenient for improving. What if the Ganesha Familia discovers us…”

    “I know!”

The suddenly excited voice made Noah instinctively look at Ais, discovering the spark of excitement and a hint of pride in her eyes.

    “I know how to improve!”

    “Huh?”

Ten minutes later, standing in front of the battlements made of large rocks, Noah surveyed the scene before him.

The distant horizon gradually revealed a fiery red dawn, but the shadows of the mountains below appeared even darker and deeper, especially in the city shrouded by the massive city wall.

Orario, home to the largest Magic Stone industry in the world, easily set up numerous Magic Stone lamps to illuminate the city all night long.

The southern ‘entertainment district,’ featuring places like the Guild Headquarters Pantheon, Southeast Moon Street, Western Tavern Street, and the Mana Convergence Casino, as well as the grand theater, all began to buzz with activity at night, continuing until dawn.

So until the eve of dawn, at the moment when the lights of those grand buildings go out, Dungeon City finally enters its darkest and quietest hour.

The city within the walls falls into pitch darkness, while outside, The World gradually fills with life.

“Ais, you’re amazing! You actually found the hidden entrance. Even without training, it’s nice just to enjoy the breeze here.”

    “Mmm, uh.”

Facing Noah’s admiring gaze, Ais pouts and instinctively looks away.

She feels shy to admit that she discovered the secret entrance in the city wall during her last runaway attempt.

    But, that’s okay.

Seeing Noah show such contentment in the cold wind, Ais, though she doesn’t understand why he has that expression, feels it gives her the chance to ask the questions in her heart.

    “Noah…”

    “Hmm?”

Meeting Noah’s gaze, Ais grips her wooden sword tightly, inhales the cold air, and exhales white mist that condenses and then dissipates before her eyes.

    “Why are you so strong?”

Although Loki has locked away Noah’s magic and skills, not allowing Ais to see them, she doesn’t mind.

Because Ais has finally discovered what that fluttering feeling and longing in her heart has been since Noah saved her over half a month ago.

There are many adventurers in the city stronger than Ais, including many within the Familia, but Ais knows she can’t learn anything from them.

Because a large part of those people’s strength comes from being older than Ais, having spent more time on the path of becoming an adventurer.

As long as she gives herself more time, she’ll eventually catch up.

Therefore, what she wants to learn from Noah isn’t about techniques, magic, or skills──those external things.

What truly matters to Ais is Noah’s unwavering energy and fighting spirit when facing battle, that momentum that shows no hesitation.

Even in a fight where they are to take each other’s lives, there is not a trace of hatred or gloom in his eyes, as he immerses his entire being into the battle.

That intent to kill is indeed chilling, yet it is so intense, so clear, so pure, so radiant, and even somewhat sacred…

Why can he enjoy battle so much?

Ais believes that as long as she understands the reason behind Noah’s steadfastness, she too will become strong!
