    Chapter 8 Blackened soul

Outside the glass walls, Dungeon City is shrouded in mist and rain under a faint, cloudy sky.

On the heights of that tower, where one could take in all the scenery, the silver-haired goddess blinked her violet eyes and stood up from her chair, gazing far away.

Behind her, the towering Boarfolk Warrior was startled awake, “Divine Lady?”

“Fine, fine. Such a complex soul.”

Even the All-Knowing, Powerless Goddess felt confused by what she saw.

Freya had seen countless souls from the Lower Realm—some ordinary to the extreme, some filled with greed, some great and radiant, some pure and unblemished, and even some fallen and violent.

But that silver-haired boy’s soul was one she had never encountered.

Freya preferred souls that were clean, pure, and radiant.

What about this silver-haired boy’s soul?

It wasn’t pure or clean or radiant at all.

In fact, it was the exact opposite—filled with Pain, Despair, Sadness, Intent to Kill, Hatred, and other dark emotions.

To put it in a metaphor, Freya liked the New Blade: bright, clear, sharp, and coldly radiant.

While this silver-haired boy’s soul was like an Old Blade that had been battle-worn and bloodied many times, scarred and rusted, and covered in old bloodstains.

Based on Freya’s experience with the countless souls she had encountered over the years, souls tainted with darkness are ordinary, dirty, and ugly.

But it seems that mortals of the Lower Realm really do have endless possibilities.

This silver-haired boy’s soul is filled with various dark emotions but has almost no filthy desires. Therefore, it isn’t chaotic or polluted and remains surprisingly pure.

In other words, this individual carries a very heavy burden of killing and sadness (Pain), but he rarely acts out of his own desires.

    No desire for power.

    No desire for wealth.

No desire for sex or love.

So, why does he kill? Why does he feel sad? Why does he experience Pain?

Except for a little hunger, there’s almost no trace of this silver-haired boy’s desires…

    No, not at all.

Notice something unusual, Freya furrowed her brow and looked closely.

In the depths of the soul, there lies a very pure desire hidden within the darkness.

    Is it pride or rebellion?

Freya felt a Fighting Spirit like that of Flame of Thunder, which burned her deeply with just one glance. She involuntarily looked away.

“Euleria seems to have become quite interesting lately…”

Holding a glass of red wine, the goddess sipped it leisurely, looking slightly pleased.

After several days of rain, Dungeon City’s weather finally cleared up. The oppressive atmosphere caused by the Dungeon Riots and Black Gate Faction’s chaos had also improved significantly in recent weeks.

Around midday, Noah walked out of the ‘Dwarven Grand Archive’ located in the eastern part of the city and strolled slowly down the street.

Over the past few days, Noah had been flipping through various historical books in the library, roughly piecing together the history of this world.

Monster-dominated continents, humans lived during the Era of Monsters…

Known as “Clown King,” Argo rose up, with the Fenrir Knights opening a new era of Heroes…

The gods descended, demolished skyscrapers, granted Falna, and built the Babel Tower during the Age of the Gods…

And, two were destroyed, but the last one still shattered the strongest Adventurer Group in World’s End, leading to today’s chaos in Euleria.

If that system wanted to save the world on its own, it should probably destroy Cyclopean Black Dragon, the sky king, who was responsible for that day’s destruction.

However, this is still too far off for Noah now.

And besides, there’s nothing much to worry about—either kill the dragon or be killed by it.

Now, facing Noah’s first question:…… Should he join a Familia?

From an intuitive sense, Noah doesn’t want to.

First of all, Noah doesn’t like gods. Since the previous World began, he hasn’t liked…… this world is full of suffering and evil. This suggests that gods are either well-intentioned but not omniscient or omniscient but enjoy watching disasters happen.

Second, although the gods’ powers in the Mortal World have been sealed since then, their abilities still work to some extent. It’s hard to say if they might see through Noah’s true nature.

Lastly, Noah’s past experiences have ingrained his skepticism. He doesn’t want to rely on Falna, which is completely controlled by the gods’ will at the snap of a finger.

But calm down after that, Noah pushed all those thoughts back in.

Strength is strength. There’s no reliable saying about it. It’s just whether you can control it or not.

If the Divine Blessing is taken away, then Falna will be refused. The weapons might still break down, so am I supposed to fight bare-handed?

Weapons need maintenance to ensure reliability. Relationships between people also require long-term investment. You can’t expect someone to trust you from the start and risk their life for you.

Just like the people Noah saw in the previous The World, who stay home all day without leaving, obsessed with stories of meeting elves, orc girls, dragon girls, or princess girls… basically hoping to meet a crazy girl who loves them.

Without mentioning whether such a girl exists, even if she does, you’re stuck at home all day. How would you encounter her?

Expecting a beautiful girl to break in and act like a villain?

If you can’t choose a god who ensures your safety, then it’s your fault.

Just like in the previous The World, betrayal only leads to defeat… and killing everyone together!

Thinking about this, Noah decided and returned to his senses, discovering he was on an unfamiliar street.

From the position of the sun in the sky, he should have come from the eastern part of the city to the north.

The scent of air filled with a sweet aroma caught his attention.

Looking around, he saw an entire street lined with stalls. From large pots, smoke and steam wafted out into the wind, while children ran east and west eating sliced fruit.

Guild members in uniforms were running around organizing groups of people for Growth Dragon to maintain order.

Noah realized this was the Charity Feast.

To comfort Euleria, who lost her job due to chaos, and even Familia couldn’t support her, Demeter Familia, which provides most of the city’s produce, took responsibility for providing supplies. The Orario Guild and other Familias assisted in this free food distribution event.

Thinking about this, Noah suddenly remembered he hadn’t eaten yet today. However, the money from the previous few days had been spent over the past few days.

Should he go to help them finish their goals? No, wait… no, to help someone else?

After all, that mountain of food would probably not be finished if they didn’t distribute it. Those people wouldn’t know how to leave.

But seeing the long line of nearly crowded streets, Noah thought about it and decided to give up, turning away.

He hadn’t walked far before someone called him back.
