Chapter 10 Achilles’ Heel
In the cooking classroom, the Service Club’s first request was proceeding smoothly.
“So, why are you teaching her how to cook like that?”
Yukino Yukinoshita seemed a bit out of place with this sudden request.
“She’s not good at cooking and is afraid of being embarrassed in cooking class, so we’re here to teach Yui how to cook. You agreed to it earlier, Yukinoshita, are you having second thoughts?”
Yukino supported her head with her right hand, looking at Asakura, who was holding Yui Yuigahama in his arms and personally teaching her how to cook, and felt like scolding him.
Have you ever seen anyone teach like that?
And Yuigahama-san, you’re blushing just because he’s holding your wrist – I admit he’s good-looking, but your reaction is over the top, isn’t it?
At this moment, in Yukinoshita’s eyes, Yui Yuigahama had become a shallow woman who only cared about appearances.
“Is this really how you should be teaching someone how to cook?”
“Teaching someone to fish is better than giving them fish, Yukinoshita. I’m following your teachings.”
Yukino glanced at the two of them, their bodies tangled together.
You call that teaching someone to fish?
“There’s no shortcut to cooking, Yui. You can only improve through practice and effort.”
“I won’t deny that, but the cooking class is tomorrow. Can you really make something satisfactory with just your own efforts?” Asakura whispered to Yui Yuigahama, “Yes, when chopping, use a cat-like gesture with your hands, so you won’t get hurt…”
“I don’t think that’s necessary…” Yukino Yukinoshita said, before looking at Yui Yuigahama’s clumsy movements and acknowledging Asakura’s method.
This isn’t a cooking beginner, this is a cooking idiot!
“Yuigahama-san, may I ask, how did you get through your home economics classes in middle school?”
“…I stood on the side and watched, and sometimes helped with washing vegetables.”
She gave the answer Yukino had expected.
“But I did learn sewing and other things, I just don’t have confidence in cooking.” Yui Yuigahama added.
She made some small accessories at home.
“Everything else I can handle, but I just don’t have confidence in cooking.” Yukino Yukinoshita thought, supporting her chin with her right hand: “Have you practiced at home?”
“Yes, but it never went well.”
“It’s like you have a natural deficiency or something.”
Her words were a bit too harsh.
“But it’s okay.”
Yukino continued, “I’ve always believed that hard work can make up for a lack of natural talent. Yuigahama-san, what you’re missing is the time to put in effort.”
“Have you heard of the 10,000 hour rule?”
Asakura picked up where she left off: “The people who seem like geniuses to others aren’t necessarily more talented, but rather, they’ve put in continuous effort. 10,000 hours of practice is a necessary condition for anyone to go from ordinary to a world-class master.”
“Although Asakura often spouts nonsense, he actually knows a lot of things.”
Yukino Yukinoshita nodded in agreement, “10,000 hours, assuming 8 hours a day, would be enough to turn you into a cooking expert from a novice in just 5 years.”
Yui Yuigahama listened with a dazed expression.
“Really?”
“Really,” Yukino Yukinoshita nodded.
“But 10,000 hours is too much,” Yui Yuigahama said, feeling the warmth of Asakura’s palm, her heart racing.
She couldn’t think about cooking right now.
[Yui Yuigahama’s affection level +2, points +2000]
“Tomorrow’s lesson is on stewing. The process isn’t complicated, and it won’t take 10,000 hours of effort,” Asakura said, releasing Yui’s hand.
He wasn’t planning on teaching her everything hands-on.
And her affection level was rising too quickly, which made him a bit scared.
The other girls’ affection levels increased gradually, but Yui Yuigahama was different – hers increased by 2 points every time.
If that were all, Asakura could still accept it, but the most crucial point was that her affection level never decreased!
Even when Asakura said he wanted to have a harem, or when he made a fake confession to Yui, her affection level didn’t drop.
First, ruling out the possibility that she had a physiological defect in her brain, since she was a student at a top high school in Chiba, her intelligence quotient was definitely qualified, even if her emotional intelligence was questionable.
So, what was the reason?
The correct answer: unknown.
Asakura himself didn’t know why Yui’s affection level was rising so quickly.
Even if he thought he was somewhat good-looking, this sudden and unexpected development caught him off guard.
In any case, the plan to earn points from Yui Yuigahama would have to be put on hold for now.
“Yes, the cuts don’t need to be too small, but this piece is a bit too big and won’t absorb the flavors easily,” Asakura said, standing beside her and continuing to guide her.
Yukino Yukinoshita watched as the two of them maintained a safe distance, feeling that this request was going much more smoothly than expected.
However, she was still a bit puzzled about the reason for Yui Yuigahama’s request.
“Yuigahama-san, why are you afraid of making a fool of yourself in cooking class?”
“…Eh? Because everyone else will know how to do it, if I don’t… it’ll make me seem like an outcast, right?” Yui Yuigahama had no idea why she was asking this question.
Being afraid of making a fool of yourself is normal, right?
Who would want to be ridiculed and mocked by others?
“I’m not denying your efforts, but I think being afraid of exposing your flaws is pointless,” Yukino’s gaze turned to Asakura You: “Charisma isn’t judged by strengths and weaknesses, but by personality.”
“Even the hero Achilles in Greek mythology had a weakness in his heel, but that didn’t prevent him from being a charming hero.”
“Being too concerned with what others think will only make you timid and prevent you from showing your true personality.”
If Achilles had always worried about and protected his heel, even on the battlefield, would he have been so brave?
Yukino Yukinoshita’s meaning was clear, at least Asakura You understood.
‘Don’t worry about what others think, just be yourself.’
She was indirectly telling Yui Yuigahama not to live her life trying to please everyone.
You could say it was quite high EQ.
“I know. I always subconsciously try to please others. After observing people for so long, it’s hard to change,” Yui put down her knife and looked at Yukino, her voice tinged with admiration: “Yukino can be herself, just like a white lily on a snowy mountain, super cool, but I can’t.”
Asakura You interjected, “Actually, being able to read the room is a good skill. It can be like lubricant, preventing conversations from getting awkward.”
But constantly watching others’ actions and doing what they say is not high EQ, it’s flattery…
After spending half a month with the Service Club, Asakura You noticed that Yui Yuigahama never refused anyone.
Even if she refused, she’d probably do it with an extremely humble attitude.
“If you can’t change it on your own, then let’s make it a Service Club request,” Asakura You said, looking at Yukino: “President Yukinoshita, what do you think?”
Yukino Yukinoshita nodded, resting her right hand on her chin.
Thinking: “Let’s take this commission as the ultimate goal of this semester.”
“Oh, does it take so long for a semester?” Yui Yuigahama also wanted to change her temperament, so she didn’t refuse. She was just curious that it took so long for a semester.
This is a full 4 months!
“Get a grasp of your own situation. I’m not asking for absolute clarity, at least don’t be oblivious.”
Yukino Yukinoshita’s words boiled down to… [You really are clueless.]
“Yukino’s words are so hard to understand.”
Yui Yuigahama covered her head.
Is this really Japanese?
