Chapter 104 The Reason for Joining the Service Club
During the class meeting before school let out.
“The final exam results are out, and this time it’s not a joint exam, but an in-school test, which has a significant impact on college admissions, especially for those who want to get a recommendation, so it’s even more important to focus.”
“But the exams are already over, so there’s no use talking about it now.”
Shizuka Hiratsuka, wearing her usual white lab coat, glanced over the test results and began to comment, disregarding the school’s privacy rules: “Most people’s scores have improved a lot compared to last time, it seems everyone didn’t slack off, which is good. Hayama, your score increase is far from making up for your previous decrease, with a deviation value drop of 1 point, you should know what 1 point represents, it means you’ve been left behind by nearly 10,000 people…”
After commenting on most of the students, Shizuka Hiratsuka finally wrapped up the topic.
“For the next month, it’s summer vacation, during which time, those who are struggling with their studies should consider self-study, and if possible, attend a cram school. As you should have heard from your class advisor last year, attending a cram school is not necessary, but it won’t hurt your grades either.”
In this island country, not attending a cram school is the exception rather than the rule, especially in elite high schools.
“During the summer, the class plants will need to be taken care of in rotation, Class Representative, you’re in charge of arranging that.”
“Yes!” The female Class Representative, wearing black-rimmed glasses, nodded.
“Let’s see… and club activities can continue as usual, but you’ll need to apply, so please submit your application forms to the Student Council, and they’ll take care of it.” Shizuka Hiratsuka put down the lecture notes in her hand and scanned the entire class…
“That’s all, please enjoy your summer vacation while being mindful of your safety.”
After finishing, she glanced at Asakura Yuu.
“Asakura, come see me after class.”
“Yes,” Asakura Yuu responded in a listless tone.
…………
After leaving the classroom, Asakura Yuu thought about how to spend the summer vacation.
A month and a half is indeed a long time.
Entering the office.
“How have the Service Club’s activities been lately?”
Shizuka Hiratsuka was operating the computer, her fingers flying across the keyboard.
“Before the final exams, club activities were suspended, so there weren’t any requests.”
“That’s not what I’m asking, I’m asking about the reason I initially told you to join the Service Club, do you still remember?”
Shizuka Hiratsuka saved the file, picked up the coffee cup beside her, and asked while drinking.
“Uh-huh.”
“No one can live a beautiful life in isolation from society. If they do, they’re just putting on a brave face and talking big.” Shizuka Hiratsuka recalled Asakura Yuu’s point of view, continuing, “I had you witness it firsthand and help Yukino Yukinoshita escape her lonely situation. That’s the gist of the assignment, right?”
“Specifically, it’s to change her personality and reintegrate into society.”
Asakura Yuu nodded…
“Yukino Yukinoshita does maintain a self-sufficient lifestyle, but whether she’s putting on a brave face, I can’t be sure.”
Whether the white lotus on the snowy mountain chooses to take root voluntarily or has other reasons, Asakura Yuu isn’t clear.
“After 4 months, how much do you understand about her?” Shizuka Hiratsuka inquired again.
“Beautiful.”
“After 4 months, your understanding of her is still just ‘beautiful’?” Shizuka Hiratsuka clenched her fists. “You used that same excuse when you last brushed me off, didn’t you?”
“Uh, sis, you have a good memory.”
Asakura Yuu took a step back and quickly explained, “Besides ‘beautiful,’ I wouldn’t dare to say ‘understand’ about the rest. I only know a little bit.”
Shizuka Hiratsuka adjusted her chair to face him, leaning back and crossing her legs.
Asakura Yuu’s gaze lingered on her thighs for a few seconds before moving up to her eyes as he pondered, “She’s inflexible in character, absurdly proud, and exaggeratedly stubborn. Besides that, she’s also very awkward, yearning for interpersonal connections and friendship but not wanting to take the initiative herself.”
“Do you think she’s a coward?”
“To be precise, she’s a hedgehog. She has her tough spots as well as her soft ones, but the ordinary person can’t reach them. Maybe it’s because her chest is too flat?”
“…Don’t make lewd jokes about girls so casually, you brat!” Shizuka Hiratsuka scolded through gritted teeth. “And you? Do you think you have the right to talk about her? Your level of awkwardness is just as bad as hers, and you know it.”
Asakura Yuu retorted, “I’m not good at making decisions with high risks because I hate failing, but that’s just it.”
“If I have to, I can do it too!”
“Knowing you have an illness but not treating it, don’t you think that’s even stranger?”
Shizuka Hiratsuka sighed, feeling exasperated with this student.
I originally wanted to use Yukino Yukinoshita to stimulate Asakura Yuu a bit, but a whole semester has passed and it’s been completely ineffective.
Yukino Yukinoshita has actually improved a bit, but what about this guy?
His condition seems to have worsened!
“I’m currently undergoing treatment, please give me some more time,” Asakura Yuu said sincerely.
“Oh, I guess I have no choice,” Shizuka Hiratsuka said with a wave of her hand, “go ahead, go ahead.”
After saying that, before Asakura Yuu even had a chance to leave, she asked another question: “Did you tell her why you joined the Service Club back then?”
The answer was within Shizuka Hiratsuka’s expectations…
“…No.”
“You didn’t tell her?”
“We had an agreement.”
Asakura Yuu would keep this information secret, until some day in the future, when he would use it to test the bet between the two of them.
If their close relationship, built on trust over a long time, were to crumble just because of something like this… then what’s the point of even calling it close?
It would just be a fake thing.
And if it’s fake, then there’s no need to regret discarding it, right?
Of course, if Yukino were to realize and ask about it, Asakura Yuu wouldn’t hide it from her.
“Anyway, I’m off. I have a karaoke appointment. Teacher, want to come with me?”
“No, I have work to do.”
Shizuka Hiratsuka watched him leave the office, then let out a sigh as she opened a new file.
There’s a meeting later!
So many meetings every day, what’s the point of them all?
Other than wasting time…
“I really want to find a man to marry and just stay at home, being pampered every day.”
“Asakura, you’d better grow up quickly. It’ll take 7 or 8 years, and I’m getting impatient.”
Shizuka Hiratsuka thought to herself, and she couldn’t help but laugh at her own thoughts.
That weird kid wouldn’t marry her even if she wanted to.
“…………”
…………
“Asakura, you’re finally here! We’ve been waiting forever.”
Kakeru Tobe shouted: “The exams are over!!! Let’s go to karaoke! Woo-hoo!”
He let out a Tarzan-like roar, drawing the attention of many students at the school gate.
“Woo-hoo! It’s over!!” Ooka from the baseball club chimed in.
“Can you guys please keep it down? Everyone’s staring.”
Yumiko gave them a stern look.
Kakeru Tobe lowered his voice: “What’s it to them? We’re just having fun.”
“Are the Hikigayas coming?” Hayato Hayama asked Asakura Yuu as he approached.
“Hachiman said he’s going home to play some games, so he’s not coming. And Trash-kun has a part-time job today,”
Asakura Yuu was frustrated with Hachiman, but he didn’t force the idea of socializing on him.
However, the excuse that “I’ll suffocate at karaoke and definitely die, spare me, please! Red bean paste oysters!” was quite exaggerated.
“So it’s just the few of us?” Yui Yuigahama asked.
“About 7 people, that’s enough, right?”
To her, the fewer people, the better, actually!
