Chapter 11 A Promise Between the Two

    Half an hour later.

The experimental stew was finally done, and just like curry, a simple dish like braised potato and meat was hard to mess up, as long as you knew how to wash and chop the ingredients.

Asakura thought so, until he took a bite of Yui Yuigahama’s cooking…

“The flavor still has a lot of room for improvement.”

A tactful way of speaking could avoid a lot of unnecessary trouble, and beating around the bush could reduce hassle, which was a clever social skill.

However, among the 3 people present, one of them wasn’t tactful at all.

Yukino Yukinoshita put down her chopsticks, and her soft, plump lips spoke words that fit her personality: “It’s not good, you could even say it’s bad!”

    Yui Yuigahama’s face visibly fell.

Although she already knew her cooking skills were bad, being told directly that it was unpalatable still hurt the girl’s heart.

“If I had to use a metaphor to describe it…” Yukino rubbed her eyebrows, recalling the taste, and gave a descriptive phrase: “It’s like rotting animal intestines. At first, it seems okay, but as you chew, the bad stuff keeps flooding your taste buds.”

“In short, it’s edible, but not good, and it doesn’t even reach average level.”

Asakura looked at Yui Yuigahama’s disappointed face and comforted her: “For a first try, this level is already pretty good.”

“Thanks, but you don’t have to comfort me, Asakura-kun.” Yui Yuigahama forced a smile, “After all…”

She laughed awkwardly a few times, “I also think it’s not good.”

Asakura thought it wasn’t that bad.

A girl’s cooking was 40% about the taste and 60% about the thought, after all.

You could even say that guys were easy to deceive – as long as you said it was handmade, they could eat even rotting sea cucumber intestines!

“Newbies often make mistakes with seasoning and heat adjustment…” Yukino Yukinoshita offered a suggestion: “If you want to get by in class, using a quantitative method is more suitable. Use a fixed amount of seasoning, and fix the cooking time.”

This way, even if you’re not skilled, you can control the quality within a certain range, and even if it’s not delicious, it won’t be too bad.

Compared to vague words like “a little” or “a lot”, numbers like 5g, 12g, or 1kg are more reassuring.

“President Yukinoshita, what you said makes sense, but won’t cooking this way lack heart?”

“Asakura, first, consider Yuigahama-san’s request. Second, repeat what you said to counter my argument earlier. Third, my proposal doesn’t have any obvious flaws. And lastly, when countering someone, bring up actual points. Intention is a highly subjective view.”

Yukino Yukinoshita presented her arguments one by one.

Asakura revealed a thoughtful expression upon hearing her words.

“Your proposal might be feasible, but I think Yui still has room to improve and get into Ayumu through her own efforts. It’s not necessary to do this; you’re denying her potential for growth.”

He had indeed said earlier… that tomorrow was cooking class, and with just effort, it was impossible to make delicious food.

But he didn’t say it had to be simplified to that extent.

Cooking like a machine, that’s not much different from buying a cooking machine!

“Okay, okay, let’s not fight,” Yui Yuigahama said, thinking the two were about to get into an argument, and quickly mediated.

“We’re not fighting. We’re just laying out our different views.” Yukino Yukinoshita showed a apologetic expression towards Yui Yuigahama.

Her interactions with Asakura had always been like this.

Rather than keeping thoughts hidden, it’s better to express them early on.

This is better for both parties.

“In human interactions, words are the most untrustworthy. False speech, violent speech, slips of the tongue, empty words… often, the hidden parts are where relationships start to break. When I joined the Service Club, I made a bet with Yukinoshita,” Asakura explained, “as the condition for her to agree to my membership.”

The bet was interesting and would take a long time.

“A bet?” Yui Yuigahama was curious about this.

Gossip about a handsome guy and a beautiful girl will always pique interest, especially since they were both famous in school.

“The stakes aren’t the issue. The content is… if the two of us never hide anything from each other, and when faced with questions, only give honest answers, will we become extremely close? We decided to use our 2 years of high school to research this topic.”

If they were to strip away all their masks and pretenses, revealing their flaws and the imperfections hidden beneath their glamorous exteriors to each other, could their relationship still progress?

Initially, Yukino Yukinoshita was against Asakura joining the Service Club, seeing him as a pervert who joined the club for his own beauty, and she couldn’t trust him at all.

But after he proposed the bet…

    Yukino Yukinoshita changed her mind.

She’s been pondering how relationships work, among all sorts of connections, she finds the ‘friend’ label the hardest to define.

How much of a gap is there between casual friends and best friends?

And what about the distance between best friends and almost lovers?

Using herself and Asakura Yū as subjects for observation, feeling out the nuances of relationships firsthand, seems like a good choice.

The [observer] and the [observed], that’s the kind of relationship the two members of the Service Club have with each other right now.

“Sorry, Yuki, I’m not following,” Yui Yuigahama tries to understand but finds the topic too distant for her.

“But I do know that if 2 people keep picking at each other, their relationship is bound to get worse.”

    Yukino Yukinoshita drops the subject.

It seems she’s understood why Yui Yuigahama always goes along with others… It’s because she’s afraid of ruining the relationship, so she plays it safe, not stating her own opinions, just going along with what others say.

Such a relationship is fake, and maintaining a false connection will eventually lead to a breakdown.

Noticing Yukino’s silence, Yui continues, “And… doing this kind of research, in the end, you’ll…”

If it fails, it’s no big deal, you just don’t end up as friends.

    But if it succeeds…

It’d be hard to not end up getting married.

After all, being able to be close despite knowing each other’s flaws is something many couples can’t achieve.

“What would happen?” Yukino is puzzled this time.

She’s quite dense when it comes to feelings.

“Ahaha~ nothing,” Yui Yuigahama laughs it off, moving past the topic.

Asakura Yū smiles too, without explaining.

Even he can’t predict what the outcome will be between him and Yukino.

Yukino Yukinoshita is the most unique girl he’s ever come across.

“Explain,” Yukino Yukinoshita turns to Asakura Yū.

“As relationships grow closer, they eventually transcend friendship, and we might end up liking each other,” he says.

They had an agreement, if you don’t want to answer, then don’t.

Silence is better than hiding the truth.

“If you like each other, then just date,” Yukino Yukinoshita states with a dazed expression.

Yui Yuigahama covers her face upon hearing that.

Yukino Yukinoshita’s straightforwardness is too broad, it even swept her up.

    ‘She’s so cute.’
