Chapter 17 Confrontation at the School Gate
With Yukino Yukinoshita’s disdainful gaze still fresh in his mind, Asakura Yu prepared to head home after the club activities.
He had a part-time job today, working at a convenience store near his home.
It was the same place where he had met Eucliwood last time.
The silver-haired girl had left a deep impression on Asakura Yu, and even after so many days, he couldn’t forget her.
Since he hadn’t heard from her in the past 2 days, Asakura Yu assumed she had already returned home.
Their relationship was that of mere acquaintances who had met only once, and Asakura Yu felt that he had done enough.
…………
It was the day before the Golden Week holiday, at the end of April.
A week had passed since the first request had ended.
After a peaceful morning of classes, Asakura Yu had just picked up his lunchbox and was about to call out to Hachiman Hikigaya and the others to go eat when he heard the popular group discussing something.
“Yumiko, I’m going out for a bit… later,”
“What are you doing?” Yumiko Miura asked, holding a nail clipper and trimming her nails.
She stopped what she was doing, looked up at Yui Yuigahama, and smiled: “Yui, can you buy me a drink on your way back? I forgot mine today, and I want to drink lemon tea.”
“Uh… I might not be back until the fifth period.”
Yui Yuigahama noticed that the popular group was staring at her.
“What are you doing? Can you tell me?”
“…uh”
Having lunch with Yukino Yukinoshita – Yui Yuigahama felt that she couldn’t tell Yumiko about it.
Her old habit had resurfaced.
She felt that choosing one person would hurt another.
“Aren’t we friends?” Yumiko Miura thought that if they couldn’t even do small favors for each other as friends, then it was better to just say “I’m busy” directly.
Yui’s vague behavior made Yumiko feel like Yui didn’t consider her a friend.
This didn’t make Yumiko happy.
Between friends, many small things could be said openly, and being cryptic was actually annoying.
“Of course, we’re friends,” Yui Yuigahama said with a forced smile.
“Forget it. Talking to you is so boring.”
“Sorry.”
“Again, why are you apologizing? Is this something you need to apologize for? Can’t you just be clear about things? Your attitude makes it seem like I’m bullying you.” Yumiko Miura stood up, slapped the desk, and made a crisp sound.
“Your personality really gets on my nerves! Do you think I’ll be happy if you just flatter me? Sorry, but at least for me, it doesn’t work!”
With that, the atmosphere in the entire class froze.
As the Brahmin caste of Class 2-F, the popular group sits at the top of the food chain within the class.
When a quarrel like this breaks out among them, no one dares to intervene.
Basically, the only choice is to flee.
“I’m sorry.”
“Hmph…” Yumiko Miura chuckled at the words.
Her voice was filled with displeasure: “I already said it! You don’t need to apologize to me!”
Yui Yuigahama fell silent.
She looked down, her expression one of being at a loss.
Never having been scolded by a friend like this, she didn’t know what to do for a moment.
The entire class was silent, as if time had come to a standstill.
Even the other boys and girls in the popular group didn’t speak up.
Not even Hayato Hayama, who was usually good at easing the atmosphere, made a sound.
It was a matter among girls, and his sudden intervention would only worsen the situation.
Hayato Hayama pondered for a moment, then quickly looked at Asakura Yu, who was sitting still.
If anyone could end this farce, it would undoubtedly be Asakura Yu.
“…Yui.”
Asakura Yu spoke up quickly.
Accompanying his words, he walked over.
All eyes in the class were now on this handsome young man.
Even though the sunlight outside wasn’t strong, there was still an illusion of light shining on his face.
He seemed to sparkle with a magical brilliance──such was the kind of young man Asakura Yu was.
“Do you remember the request you made to the Service Club? The one about improving your personality.”
“I remember.” Yui Yuigahama looked at his figure, feeling a sense of relief.
She wasn’t alone.
Just knowing that was enough to make her feel at ease.
“Service Club?” Yumiko Miura looked at Yui Yuigahama’s face, “Yui, is this related to that Service Club?”
“Yes.”
Yui Yuigahama nodded, speaking in a low voice: “I made a lunch date with Yuki-chan.”
After saying it out loud, she felt her body lighten.
“Yuki-chan?” Yumiko Miura’s eyebrows furrowed, and she quickly looked at Asakura Yu: “Yu-kun, who is this?”
“Yukino Yukinoshita, the president of the Service Club. You should have heard of her.” Asakura Yu knew she didn’t mean any harm, just curious.
“Oh.” Yumiko Miura nodded.
She was certainly aware of Yukino Yukinoshita, but they hadn’t interacted much.
Class F was a regular class, while Class J was an international education class composed of returning elite children and students preparing to study abroad.
The public and physical education classes of regular students were separate from those of the international class.
Under these circumstances.
Yumiko Miura had heard of Yukino Yukinoshita, but they had never actually met or talked.
She finished thinking and looked at Yui Yuigahama: “If you just wanted to eat with someone else, you could have just told me directly instead of beating around the bush.”
“Sorry… I know, I know.” Yui Yuigahama was about to apologize, but quickly retracted her words.
“…”
Yumiko Miura realized that Yui Yuigahama wouldn’t change her personality anytime soon.
If they weren’t friends, she wouldn’t bother.
But as a friend, Yui Yuigahama’s personality made her uneasy.
She could be taken advantage of by someone with bad intentions later on.
However, Yumiko Miura didn’t know that Yui Yuigahama only made friends with good people.
If someone was bad, she would keep her distance.
“Yui, you should go. Go find Yukinoshita-san at that weird club.” Yumiko Miura took out her phone and said listlessly.
Yui Yuigahama was about to answer.
When she saw the back door of the classroom open.
“Strange? I can’t pretend I didn’t hear that.”
Yukino Yukinoshita looked at Yumiko Miura, then at Asakura You standing between the two girls, and finally her gaze settled on Yui Yuigahama.
“Yuigahama-san, since you invited me, don’t stand me up.”
“I…”
Yui Yuigahama was about to apologize, but then she remembered Yumiko Miura’s words.
Should she apologize?
Or not?
For a moment, her brain short-circuited.
A few seconds later.
“You, in this situation, I should apologize, right?” She asked Asakura You.
“…Of course you should apologize if you did something wrong!”
Asakura You covered his face, feeling embarrassed to be friends with such a clueless girl.
Yui Yuigahama also reacted, looking at Yukino, and speaking in a weak tone, “Yuki-chan, I’m sorry. I was chatting with Yumiko earlier.”
”Chat? If you call that kind of communication a chat, I have nothing to say.” Yukino Yukinoshita said angrily: “She is just imposing her own thoughts on you, aggressive, and I can only think of such an adjective.”
She finished listening outside the door.
Before Asakura Yu added the topic, the blonde girl was forcing Yui Yuigahama to answer questions.
If relationships between friends need to be handled like this, can they even be called friends?
Yumiko Miura paused her pressing on the phone screen.
She looked up and met Yukino’s gaze:
“Yukinoshita-san, This is between me and Yui, has nothing to do with you, right?”
The atmosphere turned cold again.
Even Asakura Yu felt a little hesitant to speak.
