Chapter 23 Understanding and Being Understood
“If it can’t be picked out, then think of a solution.”
Asakura’s words were nothing but nonsense to Yukino.
If I could come up with a solution, would I be wasting so many of these travel coins?
Yukino returned the travel coins Asakura had given her earlier, “You help me pick one.”
“No problem, how many do you want?”
“Just one is enough.”
Asakura observed and found that the Pan-san plushie was being pressed down by several Shiba Inu plushies.
He suddenly remembered that Yui Yuigahama seemed to like dogs, so he asked, “Yui, do you like Shiba Inus? I remember you have a dog at home, a Dachshund named Sablé, right?”
The process of picking out a plushie was fun, but picking too many would be hard to display at home.
If possible, he didn’t want to waste them.
“Of course, I like them. But how did you remember that, small Asakura?”
Compared to the plushies, Yui actually cared more about the fact that Asakura was giving her something.
This was the first time she had received a gift from a boy.
“I saw you walking your dog by the school when classes started, and you mentioned the name when you were chatting casually.”
Asakura had a good memory, especially for visual memories, and he could even recall scenes from a few years ago.
Not to mention Hachiman’s incident where he almost got hit by a car while trying to save a dog.
And he was actually making things worse…
Sablé could run much faster than Hachiman and wouldn’t have been hit by the car; Hachiman was just being overly concerned.
It was laughable.
Luckily, Asakura had stopped him in time; otherwise, Hachiman would have repeated his mistakes and still not fit in with the class… although things weren’t much better now.
In a way, having a strong memory wasn’t a good thing, as both happy and sad memories would be hard to forget.
Asakura was afraid of setbacks because, compared to others, he needed more time to recover from them.
This had also led to his strong competitive spirit.
If he was afraid of failing, then he just wouldn’t fail; he would eliminate the possibility from the start.
“Have you been paying attention to me all along, small Asakura?”
“No, I just have a good memory.”
“Huh? At a time like this, you should say: Yes, Yui, I’ve always been watching you.” Yui Yuigahama pretended to be angry and said, “Small Asakura doesn’t understand girls’ feelings at all.”
“I think it’s scary when guys do everything according to what girls want.”
“Really? Everyone likes hearing nice things, don’t they?”
“You worry and fear [what if the other person dislikes you], [what if you hurt the other person’s feelings]. Once you fall into this way of thinking, it’s hard to do what you want to do. You should understand this feeling, Yui, don’t you?”
“Yeah.”
Asakura picked up a coin and inserted it, his expression becoming focused.
“No, I won’t dislike you for something like that. If I did, that wouldn’t be what it means to be friends,” Yui Yuigahama replied.
Yukino Yukinoshita didn’t interrupt their conversation.
She knew that Asakura was helping Yui overcome her need to please others and escape the dilemma of trying to accommodate everyone.
“The reason you worry about being disliked by others is because you lack confidence in yourself. I’m different, I think that with my charm, no girl would dislike me for something like this, so I can say some off-the-cuff, even offensive things.”
“You’re too full of yourself, little Asakura,” Yui Yuigahama teased.
Saying offensive things would definitely make people dislike him.
“Maybe, but let me ask you, Yui. From the start, I’ve been lecturing you, do you have any objections?”
Nobody likes being lectured.
Yui shook her head, saying, “No, because what you’re saying makes sense, little Asakura.”
“I’m treating you like this because I know you won’t dislike me for it. If it were another girl, I definitely wouldn’t speak up like this.”
This was what they meant by “tailoring your approach to the person.”
After Asakura finished speaking, he casually asked Yukino,
“Yukinoshita, do you know what the core of socializing, or making friends, is?”
“Mutual understanding?.. In my opinion, understanding is the most important thing.”
Yukino didn’t have many friends, but she knew this much.
“That’s close. To sum it up, it’s [understanding the other person and making an effort to let them understand you].”
As you exchange with each other more deeply, you can naturally determine whether this person can be friends with you.
The phrase “birds of a feather flock together” is based on this principle.
“Yui, in your ‘popular crowd’… although I don’t like using that term, I’ll use it as a placeholder. You’ve been trying to understand others, but you’ve given up on letting others understand you. This is also why you fought with Yumiko last time.”
Asakura pressed the button on the claw machine.
The claw slowly moved down and soon picked up the doll.
“In your opinion, what kind of person is Yumiko?”
“She’s straightforward, considers her friends, and is a good person.”
“And what about you?”
“I like to accommodate others…”
Yui Yuigahama was speechless.
She followed Asakura Yu’s line of reasoning and understood his point.
She knew Yumiko hated keeping secrets, yet she had done the very thing she despised.
“You figured it out? You didn’t even manage to [conform to others] properly because your understanding of Yumiko isn’t deep enough.”
“Yeah, I’m terrible.” Yui Yuigahama seemed to have found the root of her problem.
Asakura Yu took the Shiba Inu doll from the prize booth and handed it to Yui Yuigahama.
He mimicked the delivery driver’s tone: “Here you go, Yuigahama-sama, your plushie has arrived. Please check it.”
“Thanks.” Yui rubbed the Shiba Inu doll and decided to put it on her bed when she got home.
“You’re welcome.”
Having said that, Asakura Yu turned back to Yukino and, with the serious expression they often used for discussing problems, asked…
“About that question earlier, I actually have another answer I want… Yukinoshita-san, what kind of person do you see Yumiko Miura as?”
“What’s the point of asking that?”
Yukino Yukinoshita paused for a moment, pondering his question.
Caught off guard by the sudden question, she found it difficult to give an immediate answer.
“Hmm…Strong-willed, likes to push others around, arrogant like a half-ape? Something like that. I haven’t interacted with her much…”
Yukino stopped mid-sentence, rubbing her temples.
“Putting labels on things I don’t understand, I guess I make those same low-level mistakes too.”
The Yumiko Miura she saw was different from the one Yui Yuigahama saw.
The reason for this discrepancy was a lack of understanding.
But Yukino still didn’t delve into Yumiko’s thoughts; she simply disliked her.
“…It’s human nature, I often judge people based on stereotypes too. Just like you said, Yukinoshita-san, [Why can you make such hasty judgments about things you don’t understand?].” Asakura Yu repeated her earlier words.
This time, Yukino didn’t demand royalties from him.
Instead, she fell into thought.
After a while, she said in a cold and quiet tone: “I admit that I was wrong to argue with her at first, but in this matter, she was also in the wrong. She could have been more tactful, but instead, she chose the most aggressive approach.”
Asakura nodded, “So I didn’t get fucked at that time, and Yui wasn’t angry because of her strength. You didn’t know Yumiko seriously at all, and you didn’t know much about Yui.”
It is a very self-centered approach to break in without understanding the whole story!
“You’re really getting on my nerves with that lecture.” Yukino glared at him.
“Humph, knowing you, you think you know what I’ll do?” Asakura Yu dropped another coin.
This time should be able to get out Mr. Pan that she likes.
But where’s the cuteness in this doll?
It feels weird, it’s a panda, but it has a pointy nose like a mouse… Is this a combination of a mouse and a panda?
“Your actions were about what I expected.”
Yukino didn’t expect him to take her side.
“Since you know, you definitely won’t get angry with me over this little thing. After all, you’re a mature woman, you wouldn’t show your emotions on the surface, right?”
“Of course.”
Yukino’s face flushed a light pink.
Not because she was embarrassed, but because she remembered the afternoon, the words written on the whiteboard, and the questions she asked him.
Feeling ashamed inside.
Because she wasn’t favored, she acted like this, being petulant and jealous.
This made Yukino feel like she wasn’t herself, a bit strange.
“But Asakura-sama, understanding someone doesn’t mean you’ll be understood by them…” Momo chimed in after hearing his words.
She twirled her fingers through her hair, a thoughtful expression on her face.
Trying hard to understand others, but not being understood, isn’t that pitiful?
Asakura Yu gave an answer: “That doesn’t matter. I just need to keep improving my charm, until he wants to understand me. If I still can’t get his attention after all that effort, then I’ll just give up early, get a good night’s sleep, so I don’t fall asleep in class the next day.”
“Because…”
Asakura Yu pressed the claw machine button:
“Not all fish live in the same sea, if everyone could understand each other, the world would probably have been peaceful long ago.”
With a clang.
Mr. Pan’s doll fell into the prize area.
He bent down, took the prize, and handed it to Yukino: “Here you go. Your first gift, keep it safe.”
Yukino politely accepted his gift.
“Thank you.”
