Chapter 30 The Story is Far From Over

By the time they left the Kawasaki residence, the sky had darkened considerably.

Asakura Yuu and Yumiko Miura rode along the riverbank, the gentle breeze brushing past them, filled with the essence of youth, yet both were struck by the weight of reality, their expressions somewhat sullen.

“Kawasaki-san didn’t explain things clearly. She’s definitely hiding something from us,” Yumiko said, hugging Yu’s waist, her tone certain as she spoke these words.

Saki Kawasaki’s earlier words had given Yumiko this feeling…

Saki Kawasaki must be devising a plan, one that didn’t suit the status of a high school student.

If she were to break school rules later and do something bad, she’d be in deep trouble if reported.

“What else could she be hiding from us? She said it herself, she’s already talked to her parents.”

“Yu-kun, don’t you want to help her? Kawasaki-san really wants to go to college, but she can’t because of her family’s financial difficulties…” Yumiko Miura felt that with Asakura Yuu’s personality, he wouldn’t let this situation slide.

“A tuition fee of a million yen a year, Yumiko. Do you think I can come up with that? Moreover, even if I had that kind of money, do you think I’d spend it on someone who’s not even a close classmate?”

“Yes! If it’s you, Yu-kun, you definitely would!”

Yumiko’s certainty made Asakura Yuu laugh.

The other’s exaggerated trust in him was amusing; she believed he could do something like that.

    “Hahaha~”

The boy’s cheerful laughter drifted along the riverbank with the wind.

Under the setting sun, the girl with golden curls, whose hair was slightly fluttering from the moving bicycle, patted the back of the boy’s head, blushing as she said:

“What are you laughing at? I really think you can do it! Dummy, show some empathy in a moment like this!”

“Sorry, sorry, but it seems like it’d be hard for us to get involved. She was pretty harsh just now, calling our connection [just a regular classmate relationship].”

    “But…”

Yumiko knew that sticking her nose in wasn’t nice, but the kindness hidden in her heart wouldn’t allow such a thing to happen in front of her.

“If it were Hayama or you in trouble, I’d help unconditionally because I consider you guys friends, and you consider me a friend too. I could set aside some mature thinking and act with the passion a high school student should have, without worrying about the consequences.”

But now, without the pretext of delivering lecture notes as class representative, Asakura Yuu once again had no reason to intervene in the situation.

Saki Kawasaki’s clear attitude also told him… Mind your own business.

There are indeed people in this world who don’t consider the help of others, believing they can live beautifully and splendidly on their own.

Yet, they can’t soar to great heights, and as a result, most outcomes aren’t very pretty… You can’t ensure that you’ll never need the help of others; having friends makes things easier.

    Interpersonal relationships are unavoidable.

Burning the past and wearing a mask──that’s what it means to be an adult.

But Saki Kawasaki, as a high school student, hasn’t grasped this truth yet.

“You’re not wrong, Yuu. But we can try to be friends with Kawasaki-san, then you’ll have a reason to help her, right?”

Asakura Yuu nodded at this: “Exactly, let’s work on building a good relationship with her.”

A phrase he had seen somewhere floated through his mind:

[In youth, both love and hate are blatant. Especially towards those we dislike. When you hate someone, you can’t help but resist their every word and action, responding with cold remarks, and even tearing off the mask without a care.

As you experience more and see more, you gradually understand: hating someone really doesn’t require a falling out.]

Perhaps this is what’s called [growth] and [maturity].

Gradually, you become a boring, rule-abiding person.

But I’m sorry, I’m still young, and I still have the courage to challenge what’s [right].

    …………

    Saturday.

Asakura Yuu went to Hachiman Hikigaya’s house.

The two had agreed to play Yuu travel together.

“…That’s about it. In the end, after calculating everything, I just handed out the lecture notes, and the problem itself remains unaddressed.”

After listening to Asakura Yuu’s report on Saki Kawasaki, Hachiman Hikigaya said in a flat tone: “Isn’t it exhausting to live like this? Not everything can be solved through effort; you don’t need to go to such lengths.”

Is this what they call the male lead’s responsibility?

But what do you gain from doing this?

    That Kawasaki girl’s goodwill?

    What can goodwill do?

    Exchange for money?

Wake up, the male lead doesn’t have to sacrifice himself; this isn’t the era of popular hot-blooded boys anymore!

“I actually want to give up a bit…”

“Don’t deceive yourself; it’s meaningless. In the 3 years I’ve known you, you’ve been running around helping others like a fool since middle school. At first, I thought you were just trying to build a persona, but later I realized you’re just plain silly.” Hachiman Hikigaya said with a sigh.

If you weren’t silly, you wouldn’t be approaching someone like me, who’s on the edge of the class.

You keep doing foolish things, and now look, you’ve hit a wall called [money].

Can a high school student solve a money problem of over a million yen?

    That’s tough.

“Asakura, do you know about alchemy?” Hachiman couldn’t just stand by and watch his friend struggle.

“Huh? The one about equivalent exchange?”

“No, um… it’s kind of similar.” Hachiman Hikigaya put down the controller and thought for a moment: “I’ve been saving up a lot of money to buy books and travel, do you know how I got it all?”

“Ah~ big brother’s going to start teaching his weird ways of making money again.” A lively and cute voice came from the entrance hall next to the living room.

A girl who was completely different from Hachiman Hikigaya, making one wonder if they were even related, walked in after changing her shoes.

Komachi Hikigaya greeted the two in the living room with energy: “Hello~ onii-chan!”

    Asakura smiled back: “Hello~”

Hachiman continued to talk about his alchemy: “What can I do? I’m the lowest caste in this household. Even Makacura the cat is higher ranked than me…”

    He muttered to himself:

“My lunch money is only half of Komachi’s, I don’t get a cake on my birthday, just 10,000 yen, and I’ve never received a gift from Santa Claus since I was little. Although I don’t believe in Santa, it’s weird that my parents won’t even pretend to be him…”

His speech became faster and quieter, like a drowning person.

Asakura hurriedly shook his shoulders to try and save him: “Hachiman! Snap out of it! Don’t drown in your past memories!”

    “!!”

Hachiman Hikigaya came back to his senses, “Sorry, what was I saying again?”

“You were saying you’re the lowest caste in the household, even more pitiful than the cat.”

“Yeah, so I came up with a way to earn some pocket money for myself.” Hachiman Hikigaya smiled slyly, “I use my scholarship to offset my tuition, then take the difference from the tuition my parents give me to add to my secret stash.”

“I almost forgot, Hachiman, you were in the top 3 in your grade for the liberal arts in the last comprehensive academic test…”

He’s always had a talent for this kind of thing.

But, this scholarship alchemy, it feels like it has a lot of potential for making money.

If things go well, I can earn at least tens of thousands of yen per semester, or even more.
