Chapter 31 The Mastermind Behind the Scenes

“That’s my report on this assignment.”

    Inside the office on Monday.

Asakura Yū finished explaining the events to Shizuka Hiratsuka, holding nothing back.

“I told you to deliver the lesson plans, but you went and brought a girl along, and even let her ride on the back of your bike?”

Shizuka Hiratsuka said, scolding him in a symbolic manner as a teacher: “You little punk, don’t recklessly give people rides on your bike. What if you get stopped by the police? Don’t forget, you’re wearing our school uniform!”

“Got it, next time I’ll take off my uniform before riding.”

“Tsk, stop being cheeky with me, I’m not going to win an argument with you.” Shizuka Hiratsuka lit a cigarette: “Let’s get back to the topic at hand… what do you think about this incident?”

As a teacher, she had encountered similar situations before, but her position didn’t allow her to intervene.

Every family has its own problems, and as an outsider, it’s not her place to get involved.

Asakura Yū touched his right index finger to his temple, thinking: “…Sōbu High is a prep school, and most students aim to attend university after graduation.

However, under these circumstances, a small number of students still choose to enter the workforce directly after graduating.

    Why is that?

From what I know, a Sōbu High diploma has more value in the local area than some unknown universities from outside the area.

For these students, if they plan to develop their careers locally, their high school diploma is enough.”

As a municipal key school, almost every family considers sending their children to Sōbu High, so its reputation naturally increases.

Correspondingly, as a public school with a good reputation, it’s not easy to get in.

“So, do you think the assignment can be considered complete?”

From Shizuka Hiratsuka’s perspective, it’s fine this way…

The student and their parents had a discussion and decided to give up on university, choosing to work after graduating from high school instead.

Moreover, it’s not uncommon for high school graduates to enter the workforce.

Attending university for 4 more years doesn’t guarantee a high position right away.

In this country, career advancement depends not only on ability but also on seniority.

    Yes, that’s right!

    It’s seniority!

Although it sounds cruel, the workplace values seniority!

As a high school student, as long as you have enough seniority, you can even surpass graduate students!

Those superiors who nonchalantly push their work onto newcomers and exploit them can do so because they too suffered from workplace bullying in the past.

Now that they’ve finally made it through, they’ll definitely want to continue the ‘tradition’ they suffered through.

Once newcomers gain experience and climb to high positions, they often become the same.

The new generation surpasses the old, and the cycle repeats.

In conclusion, going to work after high school and getting used to the harsh realities of society early on can be a good choice, as it allows you to accumulate experience.

After all, the sooner you face hardships, the sooner you can enjoy the benefits.

“What else can I do, Hiratsuka-sensei? What do you think I should do?” Asakura asked with a curious expression.

Shizuka Hiratsuka, smoking and leaning back with his legs crossed, described the scene he wanted to see…

“Waiting at the Kawasaki’s house for Saki’s parents to return, then scolding them in front of their faces for not understanding their child’s thoughts, followed by a debate about dreams?”

This is more in line with what young people would do, isn’t it?

“You know, teacher, if I were to say something like that, I’d definitely get shot down by Kawasaki-san’s parents with their stern and righteous arguments, leaving me no room to retort, and I’d have to slink away in defeat.”

    What is a “righteous argument”?

It refers to a correct and reasonable statement.

“What about dreams, then? Sorry to say, but in the world of adults, dreams can’t be eaten as food, nor can they be exchanged for money – that’s just reality.”

“Sigh, mature high school students are really a handful.”

Although Shizuka Hiratsuka said so, he actually agreed with Asakura’s perspective.

However, he had also expected Asakura to come up with a better solution that could balance dreams and reality.

“That’s all. I have something to do, so I’ll take my leave,” Asakura said, standing up.

Shizuka Hiratsuka waved his hand, “Go ahead, go ahead.”

    Let’s stop here.

If we continue, it’ll just become a cliché story about a hero sacrificing themselves and going down with the adults who have lost their dreams – that’s too boring.

    …………

Since club activities were cancelled during exam week, Asakura naturally wouldn’t go to the Service Club, and he didn’t have a key anyway.

Today, someone had invited him to meet at a café in front of the station, which was what Asakura meant by “having something to do”.

You might ask who invited him?

Surprisingly, it was Komachi Hikigaya, Hachiman’s cute and sensible younger sister.

    Entering the café.

    “Onii-chan!! Over here!”

Komachi Hikigaya waved at him and called out for him to come over.

Asakura noticed that there was a boy around Komachi’s age sitting next to her, and judging by his childish face, he was probably a classmate.

And that face… seemed somewhat familiar.

“Asakura-senpai, hi! I’m Taishi Kawasaki! Saki Kawasaki’s younger brother!” The boy introduced himself.

    His response confirmed Asakura’s thoughts.

“Hi there, I’m Asakura Yu. Friend of your sister.” Asakura teased Komachi, “Komachi suddenly dragged me out here for what?.. Is this your secretly dating boyfriend?”

Komachi Hikigaya rolled her eyes, “No way! That was a terrible thing to say. You’re losing points with Komachi.”

“Yu-senpai, didn’t you talk with my brother about the Kawasaki family situation last time? So…”

Taishi Kawasaki chimed in, “…I asked Hikigaya-san to do this.”

“If Kyouka hadn’t told me yesterday, I wouldn’t have known my sister would so easily give up on her studies.”

“If possible, I hope Asakura-senpai can talk to my sister. You two seem pretty close, right?”

“Close? Well, if only speaking ten words in a month counts, then yeah, pretty close.”

Under the relentless questioning, Asakura Yu didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he called a waiter and ordered a coffee.

He had already considered getting in touch with Saki Kawasaki’s brother.

After peeling back the layers, he realized the root of the problem.

Saki Kawasaki gave up on going to university because her younger brother was about to enter high school.

The situation itself was simple, but during junior high, tutoring was necessary to get into a good school.

The problem immediately shifted to the painful issue of [money].

“Kawasaki-kun, do you think I can convince her?”

    “I…”

“You understand that this is a decision made by your sister and your parents, not something easily changed, right?”

“Respecting elders” is deeply ingrained in Japanese culture, which emphasizes hierarchy.

    Taishi Kawasaki knew this well.

That’s why he didn’t argue with his parents or sister.

They held higher positions within the family, and even if he voiced his opinion, it wouldn’t be taken seriously.

So, Taishi Kawasaki sought external help──someone at least on the same level as his sister.

Through Komachi Hikigaya, he found Asakura Yu, who was the class president of his sister’s class.

“I… know this is difficult.” Taishi Kawasaki understood.

But he had no other choice.

    “Don’t worry, I didn’t say I’d refuse.”

Asakura Yu gazed into his eyes, continuing, “However, although I’ll help you, the core of this matter doesn’t lie with me, but with you.”

    “Me?”

Asakura Yu revealed a mysterious smile, nodding his head.

    “That’s right.”
