Chapter 34 Time for Negotiations, Adults

After school, Saki Kawasaki picked up her little sister and was taking her home when she noticed an extra pair of shoes at the entrance.

‘Did Taishi bring a friend home?’

Taishi Kawasaki was quite popular at school, but he rarely brought friends home.

    “Ah! It’s Yu-kun!!”

Kyouka Kawasaki, the little kindergartner, let out a surprised sound as she stepped into the living room ahead of her!

Saki Kawasaki fell silent for a few seconds before taking a deep breath.

She should have known that Asakura Yu wouldn’t give up so easily.

    ‘How does he know Taishi?’

Pushing the question to the back of her mind, Saki Kawasaki entered the somewhat cramped living room.

    “Good afternoon, Saki-san.”

In her view, Asakura Yu was helping her little brother with… homework?

    How could that be!?

She had considered many possibilities, but never this one… for her class representative, who was the same age as her, to be doing homework with her little brother in the living room – this really wasn’t a bit odd?

Her expression twisted in confusion as she greeted, “Good afternoon.”

“Yu-kun~ Yu-kun~ Why didn’t Yumiko-neechan come today?” Kyouka Kawasaki’s repeated ‘Yu-kun’ was sweet and endearing; she’d definitely grow up to be a lovable girl.

…Or she might end up like a certain digimon, evolving incorrectly into a woman who loves to toy with people’s hearts.

Indeed, little girls are cutest when they’re young.

    “She’s with a friend today.”

“Oh well, can’t be helped then~” Kyouka Kawasaki mimicked an adult tone, but her words only came off as adorable.

    “Yeah, it can’t be helped.”

Ignoring their conversation, Saki Kawasaki cut in, “Asakura-san, I need to talk to you. Could you come over here for a moment?”

“…Taishi, I’ll bring you my middle school review materials tomorrow. Although it’s been 2 years, there won’t be any major changes to the exam scope at Sobu High.”

“Got it! Big bro! Roger that!”

Patting his little brother’s shoulder, Asakura Yu accompanied Saki Kawasaki out of the living room.

    ……

“I don’t know what your intentions are for getting close to my brother without permission, but I can tell you clearly – my business doesn’t concern you. Don’t go out of your way to help me, I won’t be happy about it. Your actions right now are just a hassle to me!” Saki Kawasaki spoke bluntly, “Don’t be meddlesome, it’s just trouble.”

That was Saki Kawasaki’s current thought… trouble.

“It’s not so much that I’m helping you, but rather, I’m helping your little brother.” Asakura Yu had a habit of talking and acting in roundabout ways.

“Hmph.” Saki Kawasaki’s cold snort seemed rather unfeeling.

But Asakura Yu’s inexplicable approach only troubled her.

Her brother, a middle school student, wasn’t fully matured in mind, and might easily be taken advantage of by Asakura Yu!

“You treat your little brother like a child, but he has his own thoughts.” A faint smile played on Asakura Yu’s lips: “Did you know he wants to apply to Soubu High? No, you didn’t, right? It’s no wonder they say… siblings are the closest strangers.”

    “…” Saki Kawasaki fell silent.

    She really hadn’t known.

At home, her communication with Taishi Kawasaki was minimal; since her brother entered middle school, he’d been in his rebellious phase and no longer shared much about his life with her.

    ‘What does he mean?’

Could it really just be to help Taishi with his studies?

    Impossible!

“…Hachiman Hikigaya’s little sister, she’s in the same class as Taishi. That’s how I got to know your brother.” Asakura Yu tried to put her at ease.

Saki Kawasaki muttered to herself: “…Hachiman Hikigaya?”

    A few seconds later…

“Who’s that? Someone in our class? You didn’t just make up a name to trick me, did you?”

Sorry, she really had no impression of Hachiman Hikigaya.

Asakura Yu was momentarily at a loss for words.

    Hachiman, you’re such a dog!

My plan is getting ruined like this?

It was almost a done deal!

    Asakura Yu couldn’t accept this!

    Thankfully, he had a lifeline…

“Sis, big brother isn’t lying. It’s true that I asked Hikigaya-san to set up this meeting with big brother.” Taishi Kawasaki walked from the living room to the hallway.

    “Big brother?”

Saki Kawasaki felt as if she was seeing her brother for the first time; this guy had just called someone ‘big brother’?

He’s your big brother, then what am I, his girlfriend?

“Big brother’s science grades are the top of his year at Soubu High, right?. I heard it from Hikigaya-san.” Taishi Kawasaki pleaded with reason and emotion: “I want to get into Soubu High to ease the family’s burden… Private schools generally have a higher deviation value than public ones, and although the environment is nice, the tuition is very expensive.

Sis, these are my own thoughts!”

“Asakura, what exactly did you say to my brother?” Saki Kawasaki stretched out her right hand, grasping Asakura Yu’s shoulder, her fingertips exerting force, her emotions so agitated it seemed like she was on the verge of physically lashing out.

“This kind of thing shouldn’t involve kids at all!”

That was her inner thought – family matters had nothing to do with Taishi; he was still a kid, what could he possibly understand?

“Sister, I don’t want to cause you trouble because of me.”

Looking at his sister’s expression, Taishi Kawasaki knew she hadn’t taken his words to heart at all.

Is a middle school student still a kid?

    Maybe so.

“Taishi, don’t speak, let him answer me first.”

    “Okay.”

Saki’s response made Taishi Kawasaki feel a bit displeased; as a middle school student in his rebellious phase, he couldn’t accept his sister’s attitude!

He wanted to do his part to help Saki Kawasaki, but was being ignored.

Can’t middle school students care about their family?

“When we were talking, Kyouka-chan was right next to us.

Saki-san, aren’t you underestimating your brother and sister? They’re worried about you, but you’re disregarding their feelings…”

Saki Kawasaki’s expression turned cold as she cut him off: “What do you know? What do you understand? You’ve been talking for so long, but can’t even put yourself in others’ shoes?”

“You’re an only child, right? Your family may not be rich, but they can still support your education, right? Then don’t stand on your moral high ground and lecture me!”

Don’t try to advise others on what to do unless you’ve experienced their struggles!

Saki Kawasaki didn’t think highly of people like that!

“Don’t you think I want to go to college? Do you think I want to give up? Can’t you think about what’s realistic and what’s right instead of spouting empty words? I hate idealists like you the most!! Do you think just saying it makes it useful? What right do you have to interfere with our family’s affairs as an outsider?”

    Outsider.

These 2 words left Asakura Yu speechless.

(The Great Gatsby) has a line that Asakura Yu remembered vividly… [“Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone,” he told me, “just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.”]

The current situation was very much like that.

“Sister…” Taishi Kawasaki was intimidated by her agitated demeanor.

Saki Kawasaki had unleashed all the gloom and struggles she’d accumulated over the past few days.

Did she not know her own true feelings?

As a high school student, of course, she didn’t want to do what adults considered “right”!

    But…

    she had no choice.

“Kawasaki-san, I’ll ask one last question.”

    “Go ahead.”

“When you were discussing with your parents, did you mention that you wanted to go to college?”

As soon as the words were out, Saki Kawasaki’s expression changed.

    “…No.”

    “Try following your heart, Kawasaki-san.”

Having gotten his answer, Asakura smiled at Taishi Kawasaki and said, “Taishi, can I have dinner at your place today? My cooking skills are pretty good, and I can teach you how to cook.”

“Of course, as our guest, it would be rude if you didn’t even stay for dinner!” Taishi Kawasaki had no idea what Asakura was thinking, but he went along with it anyway.

The two of them completely shut down any chance of Saki Kawasaki speaking up.

    ‘Just as I expected.’

    Next up…

was the time for discussions with the adults.

This round is my victory, Saki Kawasaki!
