Chapter 35 The World Under the Bright Moonlight

    Thirty minutes later.

    Inside the kitchen.

    “Yu-chan, Yu-chan, can I have another cake?”

Little Kyouka tugged on Asakura Yu’s sleeve just before dinner, releasing cute waves with her big, adorable eyes.

“Let’s sneak one, how about it?” Asakura Yu whispered in her ear, sharing a secret plan: “I’ll go get one, and we’ll share it, okay?”

“Yeah, yeah! Yu-chan, I love you!” Kyouka Kawasaki said in a childish voice, making a statement that could get Asakura Yu in trouble.

    Lolis are such terrifying creatures.

One misstep and you might just end up with a free pair of handcuffs.

“You can’t say that to boys so casually.”

Asakura Yu rubbed her head, then prepared to go to the living room to get the cake that was meant as a gift.

Kyouka grabbed his sleeve and said, “But, but, Kyouka only says that to Yu-chan!”

“Okay, from now on, only say it to me, okay?”

So cute, this little loli has already learned how to capture a man’s heart at such a young age; her future is limitless.

On the side, Taishi Kawasaki was chopping vegetables while listening to the two interact.

    His thoughts were racing…

‘Can big brother really solve the problem?’

His parents had some free time today and wouldn’t be late, but usually, they wouldn’t be home until almost 12 at night, except for a few days a month.

Soon, Asakura Yu came over with a piece of cake and handed it to Kyouka, “Eat a little less, or you won’t have room for dinner.”

    “Thanks, Yu-chan!”

“Good kid,” Asakura Yu said, then looked at Taishi Kawasaki…

“Taishi, I might not be of much help when persuading your parents later.”

“Big brother, do you need me to do anything?”

“No,” Asakura Yu shook his head: “Just improvise, I believe in you!”

    …………

The Kawasaki household, as a dual-income family, was no different from the rest.

A somewhat taciturn father, a mother who was still fairly pretty, with silver hair that seemed to be inherited from her, but unlike the young and beautiful Saki Kawasaki, Mrs. Kawasaki’s face showed clear signs of aging, though it was still possible to tell she was a beauty in her youth.

“Hello, uncle and aunt, I’m Asakura Yu, in the same class as Saki-san.”

Mrs. Kawasaki looked at the handsome young man who walked out of the kitchen, momentarily unable to believe it.

Her daughter had actually brought a man home?

She shook off the fatigue from work, pasting on a standard fake smile: “Welcome to our home, I’m Saki Kawasaki’s mother.”

Then, peering through the crack of the kitchen door, she spotted Taishi Kawasaki cooking inside.

Curious as to why her daughter wasn’t in charge of dinner today and why a guest was allowed in the kitchen, she didn’t let it show on her face.

“Asakura… kun, is it alright if I call you that?”

    “That’s fine.”

“May I ask, what’s your relationship with Saki?”

    “Just friends.”

After Asakura Yu finished speaking, Mrs. Kawasaki visibly relaxed.

Mrs. Kawasaki couldn’t help but worry──she knew her daughter was beautiful, but to suddenly bring home a boy who looked like a celebrity, it was hard not to speculate if they were dating.

She cast a casual glance over Asakura Yu’s attire…

The uniform from Sobu High confirmed he wasn’t lying; they were indeed in the same class, or at least the same school.

As for the expensive-looking watch on his wrist and the other accessories, she chose to overlook them for now──if he wasn’t her boyfriend, then it didn’t matter whether his family was rich or not.

“Saki, why don’t you entertain Asakura kun?”

“Mom, he’s been here for 2 hours already, what more do I need to do?”

Saki Kawasaki’s voice came from the living room nearby, her irritation plain in her tone.

Mrs. Kawasaki couldn’t fathom what had gotten into her daughter today; she seemed very abnormal.

In her eyes, her daughter had always been well-behaved and sensible.

Just the other day, she had even volunteered to give up university and start working right after high school to help with the household expenses.

    So why the sudden change?

With no choice, the exhausted Mrs. Kawasaki prepared to make tea for the guest.

Seeing this, Asakura Yu quickly stopped her:

“There’s no need, Mrs. Kawasaki, Saki-san already gave me tea when I arrived, and I’m not thirsty right now.”

    “…Alright then.”

After saying this, Mr. Kawasaki, who had just put his shoes away at the entrance, walked over and introduced himself…

“Asakura kun, welcome to our home. I’m Kawasaki Katsuhiko, Saki’s father.”

Asakura Yu gave a slight bow: “Hello, sir, thank you for having me.”

“Asakura kun, there’s no need to be so formal. Saki took a day off last time, and you, as the class representative, went out of your way to deliver the lecture notes.”

Mr. Kawasaki was very attentive to his daughter, even knowing Asakura Yu’s position in school.

After the round of greetings ended,

Saki Kawasaki entered the kitchen to help under her mother’s direction.

Kyouka-chan offered the cake she had specially saved up to Mother with a precious look.

    …………

    At the dinner table.

The Kawasaki parents were clearly not used to their daughter bringing friends home, and seemed a little flustered.

Kawasaki’s mother broke the silence first, smiling at Asakura and asking:

“How did Asakura-kun become friends with Saki at school? She’s not very easy to get along with, is she?”

A mother knows her daughter best.

She was very clear about her daughter’s personality.

“Not difficult at all, Kawasaki-san is very kind. You just need to get to know her a little and you’ll see her good points.”

‘Discover my good points in just one week? Isn’t that a bit too short?’

    Saki Kawasaki internally complained.

She couldn’t say anything out loud because of the current situation.

Kawasaki’s mother nodded, “I see. By the way, I heard that Asakura-kun, you’re a very good student?”

It really did seem like they were just ordinary friends.

If they were boyfriends, that would be a problem.

Taishi Kawasaki also chimed in, not sparing his praise:

“Not just ‘good’! Asakura-nii is the top student in his year at Soubu High!

    He’s also super nice!

When he was teaching me to study earlier, he even said he would give me the review materials he bought when he took the entrance exam for Soubu High.

That way, when I apply to Soubu High in the future, I’ll have more confidence.”

He finished speaking, Mrs. Kawasaki fell silent for a few seconds, then asked: “Taishi, do you want to take the exam for Sobu High?”

“Yeah.” Taishi Kawasaki nodded, “If my sister can get in, I want to try too.”

His grades were already pretty good.

    “What should we do?”

Mrs. Kawasaki didn’t speak for a moment.

Getting into a public high school, plus the extra tuition fees…

Besides summer school, he can’t slack off during the regular year.

Otherwise, just relying on the school’s curriculum, getting into Sobu High would be really difficult.

Saki Kawasaki had spent a lot of money on tutoring to get into Sobu High back then.

“Hey, Mom, can I cancel my summer tutoring? I want to self-study, tutoring is too expensive.”

Mrs. Kawasaki gave him a puzzled look.

Taishi Kawasaki hesitated, then mumbled: “I heard, sister doesn’t want to go to college…”

    “Taishi.”

Saki Kawasaki said nervously, she didn’t want this topic to continue, essentially telling him to shut up.

Taishi Kawasaki couldn’t understand his sister’s thinking: “Sister, you clearly want to go to college, why are you lying?”

If you have a dream, then go after it!

That’s the equation he had written in his mind with passion.

    “You don’t understand.”

“…I don’t understand? Why don’t I understand? Isn’t it just because of money?” Taishi Kawasaki stood up, looked at his parents and sister, and said in a negotiating tone: “I can take care of Kyouka, and even cancel tutoring. If we save some money, use it to send sister to college.”

“When I get into Sobu High next year, I can also get a part-time job…”

“Taishi!” Mrs. Kawasaki scolded, “Sit down! There are guests here, do you want to embarrass yourself?”

It’s not something to discuss in front of your daughter’s friend, even if you’re really short on money.

Taishi Kawasaki refused to give up, and didn’t sit down: “Using sister’s sacrifice to pave my way, this kind of future, I don’t even want it!”

    “Sit down, there are guests.”

    Kawasaki’s father finally spoke.

It was obviously similar to Mrs. Kawasaki’s words, but Taishi Kawasaki sat down after a moment of confusion.

“Saki, tell dad, do you really want to go to college?”

    Mrs. Kawasaki advised: “Taishi…”

Kawasaki’s father interrupted, “Don’t we still have savings at home? If all else fails, I’ll swallow my pride and apologize to my father to borrow money. I may not be capable, but I won’t let our child’s education suffer.”

Kawasaki’s mother put down her chopsticks, no longer speaking.

When it came to major decisions, she couldn’t argue with her husband.

Saki Kawasaki glanced at the mastermind behind the scenes, Asakura Yu, who was eating, and replied to her father, “I really want to go to college, but I don’t want to worry you.”

Her parents’ words, filled with conflict, made her feel guilty.

    [Saki Kawasaki’s affection level -3, points +1500]

Asakura Yu looked at her for a moment.

As the two adults were entangled in their concerns, he spoke up:

“…Uncle, Aunt, may I say something?”

“Asakura-kun, let’s just drop it, this topic is settled.”

Kawasaki’s mother’s smile began to falter.

Her daughter’s friend had come for the first time and was met with such an ugly situation, making her feel extremely embarrassed.

“Aunt, I just want to offer some advice; Kawasaki-san’s grades are excellent, and this method should be useful… Our school has scholarships, and the application process isn’t difficult.”

“However, it has a prerequisite: the student’s character must be outstanding.”

“Of course, Saki-san meets the standards.”

    Asakura Yu continued:

“In a year, you can probably get tens of thousands of yen.”

This wasn’t a small amount, though Asakura Yu was slightly exaggerating; to actually get that much, one would have to rank at least in the top 5 of the grade.

    After receiving this news,

the tense expressions on the faces of Kawasaki’s parents relaxed.

If there were scholarships, then the situation could be slightly alleviated.

    ……

    After finishing dinner,

Saki Kawasaki and Taishi Kawasaki saw Asakura Yu off.

Under the weak light of the old street lamps,

Taishi Kawasaki bowed slightly to Asakura Yu: “Brother, thank you.”

Without Asakura Yu, he wouldn’t have known what to do.

    “No need to.”

Asakura Yu lightly shook his head, indicating it was nothing.

He knew he was a cunning person who had taken advantage of the parents’ love for their child to threaten them, and he couldn’t bear the thanks.

This was a business negotiation, not a compromise.

Parents and children were not opposing parties; fundamentally, there was no need for negotiation.

But Asakura Yu had used Taishi Kawasaki, making his parents ‘back down’, so such behavior couldn’t be considered upright.

“Asakura, we’re heading back; be careful on your way.”

Saki’s expression was conflicted for a moment before she whispered, “Thanks for today.”

She felt like she had been too extreme lately and didn’t need to resist him that much.

Saki Kawasaki finished speaking and quickly left with her brother.

‘Only 7000? The flag event didn’t even recover all the points, and with the previous deductions, Kawasaki-san doesn’t even have any affection for me?’

He looked back on the events that had unfolded, quickly realizing where he had gone wrong… he had used Saki Kawasaki’s brother and parents.

Was there a better way to handle it?

A way that wouldn’t make Saki Kawasaki feel guilty towards her parents, but would still let her go to university without hurting her pride.

‘…I subconsciously treated this as a challenge, a game to travel and satisfy myself.’

Asakura Yu looked up at the sky.

He remained silent for a long time.

The moon hung high, and the boy stretched out his hand, only to find that no matter what, he couldn’t reach it.

Although he had just handled a difficult situation that someone of his age couldn’t have solved alone, his heart didn’t feel much of a sense of accomplishment; instead, he felt a deep sense of loss.
