Chapter 36 Sisters and Little Sister
The exam week had come to an end.
The Service Club’s activities resumed as usual.
By the end of May, the temperature was gradually rising, and many students had changed into their cooler summer uniforms.
The girls wore white blouses, paired with red ties, and the iconic plaid skirt of Sobu High, while the boys… didn’t need to be mentioned.
Yui Yuigahama liked to wear a beige spring cardigan over her summer uniform, while Yukino, true to her name, had no extra decorations, and was as clean and neat as always, with her black knee-high socks and skirt creating a great absolute territory.
“Did you complete the request about Kawasaki-san from last week?” Yukino Yukinoshita asked, looking at Asakura as he wrote on the whiteboard with a marker.
Her gaze followed the tip of the pen until he finished writing… [How to regain favor after being disliked by the opposite sex?]
Was today’s Asakura a bit off?
The topic he wrote was full of weirdness.
“Completed? I suppose so, but it wasn’t perfect,” Asakura said, putting down the marker.
Apart from a large number of points, there were no unexpected gains.
“Was it difficult? I thought you would come and ask for my help,” Yukino Yukinoshita said, resting her right hand on her chin and smiling at him.
This woman was full of charm, but sometimes she was really annoying.
Asakura mentally mimicked her words… ‘You, who are weak, can’t solve your problems, so why not come and ask me?’
Ugh, this woman probably hadn’t experienced any setbacks since elementary school, or her personality wouldn’t be so bad.
“Do you want to hear the truth or a lie?”
“You can’t lie to me, can you? You only have one choice.”
“No, apart from telling the truth, I also have the right to stay silent,” Asakura retorted.
Then, he brought up the entire incident with Saki Kawasaki.
After listening, Yukino Yukinoshita rubbed her temples with her fingers and said in a helpless tone:
“This matter… I don’t think I can help with it.”
Since their conversation at the mall, she had thought a lot about it, and the most important point was… not to make definitive comments on things she didn’t understand.
Not to mention the Saki Kawasaki incident, which involved many people she didn’t know, and in the past, she would only cause trouble for Asakura.
“Your methods were harsh, but they were probably the best you could do. Moreover, Saki Kawasaki has always been hostile towards you, and apart from using her brother to force your way in, I don’t think there’s a better way,” Yukino Yukinoshita summarized the incident.
Money shouldn’t be a concern for high school students, and the fact that he’s managed to handle it this far is a miracle, even to Yukino.
As for the topic he brought up today…
Yukino thought to herself, “If you want to regain Saki Kawasaki’s favor, then help her clean up the mess you made.”
Although the method isn’t quite upright, the intention is good, and if he makes up for it reasonably, the girl’s affection might even skyrocket… who knows?
After leaving the Service Club, Asakura Yuu headed towards his part-time job, walking his usual route.
The wind by the river was as strong as ever, reminding him of the day Golden Week ended.
The sound of children playing, the splash of someone jumping into the river, and the alluring sight of a drenched girl…
“I had a feeling I’d run into you today.”
A voice called out, and he followed the sound to see a short-haired older girl sitting on the green grass, smiling at him.
Haruno was holding a collection of short stories by Dazai Osamu, which Asakura Yuu recognized because he had the same book on his shelf at home.
“A girl’s intuition?”
“No, the wind told me,” Haruno said, showing him the book. “I tried reading like you did last time, but it’s really hard.”
“The wind by the river is pretty strong, after all,” Asakura Yuu said, sitting down beside her. “How far have you gotten, Haruno?”
Haruno, who didn’t quite fit the image of a literary girl, closed the book…
“Only about ten pages or so.”
“You must have read it a long time ago, right? Don’t you get bored?” Asakura Yuu observed the worn condition of the book.
“Human memories are short-lived; things that happened a few months ago, or even a few hours ago, can be forgotten. So, re-reading a book you’ve already read can still bring joy.” She praised the book, like a beautiful bookworm who loves reading.
Bookworms can be beautiful or ugly, too.
The beautiful ones are called “literary girls.”
The ugly ones, of course, get labeled as “book nerds” or “ugly girls.”
“Unfortunately, I don’t get to experience that kind of joy.”
“Why’s that?” Haruno turned to the first page of the book.
The first story in the collection…
“Run, Melos!” A tale that praises the faithful heart of Makoto Shin.
The main character, Melos, fails to assassinate the tyrant and is about to be executed.
He comes up with an excuse: “I want to attend my sister’s wedding, please spare my life for 3 days. As a guarantee, you can take my best friend hostage. When I return, I’ll gladly accept my death!”
The king agrees, saying, “If you don’t return, your friend will be executed, and you’ll be pardoned.”
The story ends with Melis overcoming difficulties and returning to the execution ground, saving her friend, and the king is touched by their sincerity and decides to spare them.
That’s a pretty great story, right?
“My memory is really good.”
“Melis’s friend, the name of that blacksmith is…?”
“Serenutius.” Asakura Yu said the somewhat tongue-twisting answer without even thinking.
He finished and continued, “I last read this one in elementary school.”
“An elementary school student reading Osamu Dazai?”
“Yeah. I used to like saying ‘Being human, I am sorry’ and used it as my motto. Then one day, a boy in my class asked me ‘Why don’t you want to be human?’ I answered: ‘School is tiring, right? If I become a pet dog, I just have to squat at home all day, with food and drinks readily available.’ The next day, my nickname in class became ‘Puchi’.”
Puchi, a common term for dogs in the Island Nation.
“That’s pitiful.”
Haruno lightly covered her lips, unable to stop her laughter.
“Puchi-kun… It feels cute. Can I call you that from now on?”
“Don’t call me that! Exposing other people’s bloody wounds, do you find that funny?” Asakura Yu pretended to have an angry expression, which actually gave him a bit of a puppy-dog feel.
“Since you said it, it means you don’t mind, right?”
Haruno’s eyes seemed to be able to see through people’s hearts, and Asakura Yu felt like his innermost thoughts were exposed before her.
She continued, “People can joke about past experiences, because they are already things they have let go of, things called memories.”
“Does Haruno-san have any memorable experiences?”
Haruno, asked, lowered her head to look at the river in the distance.
“My past life was very boring, you wouldn’t find it interesting.”
Living a life according to the rules, doing things as Mother had arranged, that was Haruno’s past.
‘Not trusting people, not believing in others, just like the cruel king in the story…’
But wearing a mask all the time, it’s so tiring.
Next to this guy who I’ve only met twice, she tries to let her guard down and take a little break, that’s okay, right?
Haruno couldn’t help thinking.
