Chapter 45 Can It Be Changed?

    It’s Pretty Tough

The aftermath of the underwear theft was simple enough.

Due to the rain yesterday, a stray cat had sneaked into the warehouse of the Swim Center and stolen Yuzaki Ai’s underwear to use as a warming tool… or so we’ll assume.

After all, once we borrowed the key from the teacher and opened the door, the stolen underwear belonging to our underclassman was indeed hidden in the cat’s nest, even sporting scratch marks, rendering it unusable.

    The commission is over.

The 3 returned to the Service Club room.

“I never expected the culprit to be a cat, it’s super bizarre!”

Yui Yuigahama thought the process would be a lot more troublesome.

At least it should reach the level of a mystery movie, right?

In the end, it felt like a case of much ado about nothing?

Can’t help but feel a bit disappointed.

“A cat? Just a scapegoat. The real culprit should be that second-year member named Uzumi. I’d say there’s an 80% chance, if not 100%.” Asakura Yuu glanced at the Service Club door, making sure it was locked, before stating his piece.

    “A wise judgment.”

Yukino Yukinoshita concurred: “Cats’ paws aren’t dexterous enough to easily open a wardrobe door… Moreover, just because the wardrobe wasn’t locked doesn’t mean a cat could open it at will.”

“But it was raining yesterday, and it’s normal for cats to look for something to warm up with when they’re cold, right?”

Yui Yuigahama seemed to have little swirls in her eyes.

She was like a random passerby who stumbled into a Sherlock Holmes and Watson crime-solving scene.

“Yuigahama-san, you might not be familiar with cats’ habits. On rainy days, cats get irritable because they can clearly feel the change in the humidity of the air around them.” Yukino, the cat encyclopedia, continued explaining: “To alleviate their irritability, cats sleep more on rainy days. Do you think it would go out of its way to steal underwear?”

After finishing the last sentence, Yukino placed her right hand under her chin and let out a soft laugh.

    Everything was clear as day.

Only a fool would believe that!

“Yukino, are you better from your cold? You should talk less.” Yui Yuigahama showed her concern after hearing Yukino’s long explanation.

“Cough cough.” Yukino wasn’t coughing before, but now her throat felt uncomfortable.

Maybe it was because she saw a cat she liked that Yukino was able to hold back?

But really, Yuigahama-san, could you keep your bad mouth shut?

“When we went to get the key, that Uzumi student was the one who volunteered, right? My suspicions aren’t groundless.” Holmes Asakura added the evidence.

Yui Yuigahama’s kindness made her hesitant to believe such speculation, “But Yuu, isn’t Ui Masami a key member of the girls’ travel swim club? Does she really need to steal a freshman’s underwear to humiliate her?”

“Naive.” Yukino Yukinoshita summed it up in 2 words.

    Yui Yuigahama fell silent.

“Imagine this, you’re a key member of the travel swim club, a respected senior, and then a freshman with talent close to yours, obviously more gifted, joins. To prevent this excellent freshman from threatening your position, you might resort to some tactics to make her feel uncomfortable. It’s a common practice, right?”

    “But, that’s outright bullying.”

    “Yes, it is bullying.”

    Otherwise what?

Bullying happens in every school in the island nation to some degree, and society keeps reflecting on it.

Adults keep shouting, ‘This can’t go on!’, ‘Children are the future of the island nation!’, ‘Stamp out bullying!’, but has anything changed after all these years?

It’s just a change of appearance, not substance!

    It’s hard to fix!

“So, if you’re being bullied, call for help. Don’t keep it to yourself.”

Asakura Yu looked at Yui Yuigahama with a serious expression, “If Nishikashi-san hadn’t spoken up yesterday and had chosen to keep it a secret, enduring it in silence, the bullying would have continued without end! It would only get worse!”

“There would even be more and more people joining this ‘bullying party’.”

Yukino Yukinoshita nodded, “That’s how those idiots are.”

As someone who had experienced it firsthand, she understood it well.

“Huh? Why are you staring at me, Yuu?” Yui pointed at her own lovely face, which was totally unsuitable for a background character like A.

“Because I think if you were in the same situation, you’d definitely give up fighting back and choose to stay silent.”

If Yukino Yukinoshita was bullied, she’d definitely retaliate, but Yui Yuigahama, with her somewhat timid personality, would probably just keep quiet if she was bullied.

Crying into her blanket, that’s the kind of scene Yui Yuigahama would make.

“…Hmph.” Yui Yuigahama turned her head, pouting in anger, “I wouldn’t!”

She said that aloud, but Yui Yuigahama wasn’t very confident.

She always tried to fit in with the atmosphere, partly out of fear of being bullied.

“If you ever have a problem, you have to tell us, Yuigahama-san.”

Yukino Yukinoshita gave her a look of exasperation, then asked Asakura Yuu in a casual tone: “Is this matter going to end just like that?”

“Probably, since we don’t have any evidence.”

Whoever makes a claim must provide proof; even if the culprit has a clear motive, without evidence, they can’t be caught.

It’s not like we’re in a feudal society where vigilante justice is acceptable; even the wealthy and the underworld don’t dare to take lives lightly.

“Yuu, what’s going to happen to that cat in the end?” Yui Yuigahama suddenly became concerned about the cat that was used as a scapegoat.

“It’ll be put down; stray cats that are caught usually end up with this fate. Don’t think it’s cruel, it’s a consensus among the people.”

Tens of thousands are put down every year?

    “It’s so pitiful.”

Even though she knew the harm caused by stray animals, Yui Yuigahama was kind-hearted and couldn’t bear to see this.

“Euthanasia doesn’t cause animals pain; it’s a relatively humane method. But among them, there are many abandoned pets…” Yukino’s expression turned cold; she didn’t oppose the handling of stray animals, but she despised owners who abandoned their pets.

Adopting a pet is like adding a new family member; if you’re not confident in taking care of it, then don’t adopt!

“Yukino…” Yui Yuigahama saw her angry expression and wanted to comfort her but couldn’t find the right words.

She thought of the dachshund at her home.

“Don’t be so sad; some members of the swim club are considering adopting it.”

With these words, the two girls’ moods improved slightly.

    …………

On the night the incident ended.

Asakura Yuu sat on the edge of her bed, deep in thought.

‘When the sky is about to rain, the daughter is about to get married…’

Since today was the last day of May.

Asakura Yuu had to make a decision about whether to “marry off” her “daughter”.

    This month’s product list:

Music category: Beginner’s double reed instrument (basic skill), price: 5000

Technology category: Combat power detector (rare item), price: 20000

Learning category: Memory bread (normal item) x10, price: 5000

Life category: Master gardener (intermediate skill), price: 10000

Special skill: Animal transformation (superpower), price: 70000

    [Point balance: 177084]

    There are many valuable things.

‘My obsessive-compulsive disorder is acting up.’

Seeing the last 3 digits of the point balance, Asakura Yuu furrowed her brow, recalling Isshiki Iroha, that little devil of a junior.

She loved to do things her own way, and her affection level didn’t increase according to the basics at all!

‘Quickwrite Bread seems like it’d be a neat trick; might as well grab some. Should I get a oboe too? I never even used the piano skills I bought last time. And as for that combat power scanner… sure, it’s interesting, but I’m not into fighting. That thing would just be useless to me.’

    As for superpowers, that’s a must-buy.

I’ve got plenty of points left anyway.

    After some pondering…

[You have acquired skills: Oboe Basics, Animal Doppelganger.]

[You have acquired items: Quickwrite Bread x10]

    [Points -80000]

[Current skills: Culinary Mastery, Hypnosis, Piano Basics, Oboe Basics, Animal Doppelganger]

[Current items: Instant Heal Bandages x8, Quickwrite Bread x10]

    [Remaining points: 97084]

A month’s worth of effort, gone in just a few seconds.

Having already gone through the system’s superpower infusion once, Asakura Yū isn’t feeling too bad right now.

He’s more worried about something else…

‘The item list is going to refresh again tomorrow…’

    Not nearly enough points.

    It’s like I’m stuck in a loop.
