Chapter 47 Yukinoshita’s Father Discovers a Promising Young Man
A man has 7 enemies as soon as he steps out the door.
It’s a concept, or rather a proverb, often mentioned…
Some say it’s these 7: superior, subordinate, companion, wife, other women, children, and parents.
But Yukinoshita-sama prefers this version… firewood, rice, oil, salt, and soy sauce, vinegar, tea.
Watching the handsome young man skillfully mix drinks in front of him, Yukinoshita-sama couldn’t help but recall his own high school days.
Back then, he was just a delinquent from a nearby high school, with poor grades, smoking and drinking, doing almost everything a troublemaker would do.
The only redeeming quality he might have had was his relatively kind face.
“Sir, your drink is ready.”
Asakura Yu pushed the glass forward, wiping the mixing tools.
“It’s rare to see a young man like you who can mix drinks, and your technique is impressive.”
Yukinoshita-sama took the glass from him but didn’t taste it.
He had drunk Negroni countless times, the bitterness of Campari at first, followed by the intensity of gin, and only at the end, a hint of sweetness.
It was his favorite bar.
Bartenders came and went, and he had seen many people over the years, after all… it had been 20 long years.
Someone so young, he had never seen before.
So, let’s chat.
Just drinking was too dull.
Yukinoshita-sama wanted to understand the thoughts of today’s youth, to better grasp what his 2 daughters, now in their rebellious stages, were going through… one was in college and barely seen for months, the other had moved out during spring break.
“Sir, please enjoy your drink.”
“It’s hard to make a Negroni that’s unacceptable.”
Yukinoshita-sama thought the young man in front of him had a lot of personality and was very confident in his drinks.
‘Let’s see if your skill matches your confidence.’
He picked up the glass and took a sip.
Crisp, the bitterness and aroma exploded in his mouth, followed quickly by a sweetness that filled his palate and lingered.
Surprise flickered in Yukinoshita-sama’s eyes.
He asked, “How did you do it? The bitterness is strong at first but quickly turns to sweetness?”
Many describe Negroni as a symbol of life… the crispness of childhood, the bitterness of youth, the sweetness of old age.
A drink that encapsulates all flavors.
But the one in front of him…
Started with a strong bitterness and crispness, but the mid to late stages were pure happiness, with no hint of spice at the end.
“Has your life been bitter, sir?”
Asakura Yu didn’t answer him directly.
“Bitter, but more so, it’s happiness. My wife, though like a she-devil, is a cute little devil, and my daughter, well, she’s my most precious treasure…”
It’s just that they’re too outstanding, making one worry about any unwelcome bugs that might buzz around.
“If it’s not bitter, then why drink bitter wine?”
“…You’re right.” Yukinoshita-sama took another sip, glancing at the temporary work badge on his chest, feeling the bar hadn’t made a mistake in hiring him.
He should be able to become a regular soon, right?
It’s tough for young people to start working so early.
Perhaps he’s just graduated from high school?
“Ah, life’s full of ups and downs.”
Just then, another guest approached.
He let out a loud sigh, complaining as he sat down at the bar, then looked at the intern badge on Asakura Yu’s chest and subtly got up to switch seats, figuring there were 2 other bars, no need to let a young intern mix his drink.
“Sir, please don’t leave. Think of it as giving the young more opportunities.”
Yukinoshita-sama raised his glass in an invitation.
“You are…”
Upon seeing Yukinoshita-sama’s face, the guest couldn’t hide his surprise.
It was rare to bump into a county councilman at a bar.
Even for someone like him, he should have a drink on such an important person’s account.
“A Martini, shaken, not stirred.”
He quoted the classic Bond line from 007 and sat down next to Yukinoshita-sama.
“I’m Yuigahama…”
“Meeting over drinks, no need for names.”
He didn’t want to use his identity as a councilman or Yukinoshita right now.
“You’re right.”
Yuigahama-sama agreed with him.
Asakura Yu watched the two middle-aged men chat amicably, with no intention of joining in.
A few minutes later.
“Sir, your 007 Martini. Three parts gin, one part vodka, half a part Lillet, mixed with ice, garnished with a lemon twist.”
“Thank you.”
Yuigahama-sama listened to him, delighted because the other had caught his reference, her face breaking into a bright smile.
He took the glass and downed the cocktail in 3 gulps.
“Good drinking skills.”
Yukinoshita-sama complimented.
It’s quite strong; not just anyone could drink it like that.
“Another one!” Yuigahama-sama praised Asakura Yu: “You’ve got skill, young man. I hope to have your drinks again next time.”
Asakura Yu nodded: “Thank you.”
Then, Yuigahama-sama kept drinking, having 6 glasses before he finally took a short break.
After a few rounds of drinks, the conversation between the two middle-aged men gradually shifted to their children……
“My daughter, oh…, she hardly calls me ‘dad’ anymore. I wonder if she’s got a boyfriend at school or something~”
Yuigahama-sama was leaning on the bar, his voice laced with a hint of sadness, clearly showing that he was more than just a little tipsy.
“How old is your daughter?”
“16, and she’s attending Soubu High.”
“What a coincidence, Yuigahama-sama! I also have a daughter at Soubu High. I wonder if she’s secretly dating someone too?”
Yukinoshita-sama was now empathizing with Yuigahama-sama.
His daughter had entered a rebellious phase, and her attitude towards him was getting worse.
At least the other guy’s daughter still called him “papa”.
As for his own daughters…
Haruno stopped calling him “papa” when she started middle school and switched to the more formal “father” (otousan), and Yukino, who was initially okay, changed her way of addressing him after spending a few years abroad in elementary school, learning from her sister’s bad habits.
Yukinoshita’s heart, as a slave to his daughters, was bleeding.
‘Yuigahama?’ Asakura Yuu, who was listening to their conversation, stopped wiping the glasses in his hand.
That surname… no, no, no, it couldn’t be that much of a coincidence.
There must be more than one Yuigahama family in this world, right?
“You’re so handsome, you must be really popular with the ladies, huh?” Yuigahama-sama turned the topic to Asakura Yuu: “It’s a good thing our daughters haven’t met someone like you, or they’d be doomed.”
“…I’m still single, sir, with no dating history,” Asakura Yuu forced himself to calm down.
Who’s the player here?
Your daughter must have been taken in by some other guy, don’t blame me!
“Sigh… these days, high school graduates have to start working right away, just like they did decades ago,” Yuigahama-sama sighed.
After discussing family matters, it was time to move on to national issues.
The topics of men’s conversations while drinking were always fixed.
“Young man, how old are you?”
Facing Yukinoshita-sama’s question, Asakura Yuu wiped the glass again…
“16.”
“Is it okay for someone your age to be in a bar?”
“It’s a work-study program, and my school allows it. Besides, I only mix drinks, I don’t drink.”
Minors are not allowed to drink.
