    Chapter 54 Saika Totsuka’s Request

During the mid-term exams at Soubu High School, club activities wouldn’t come to a halt; it’s only during the mid-term and final exams that the school would eliminate any factors that might affect everyone’s grades, as Hibiki would put it.

With a deviation value of 69, a number that wouldn’t be considered low even in private schools, this was the value that Soubu High School embodied.

However, due to the weakness of the school’s athletic clubs, nearby delinquent high schools and ordinary high schools would often belittle Soubu High School’s students, calling them “bookworms” – a term that had somehow spread throughout the Narashino area and had a wide reach.

People are indeed like sheep, Asakura Yuu thought to himself once again.

Hachiman Hikigaya had once muttered a phrase that Asakura Yuu still remembered: “Only the weak like to flock together, and sadly, the majority of people are weak.”

His chuunibyou-like remarks always seemed to make sense to Asakura Yuu… but after some thought, he’d feel like Hachiman was just spouting nonsense; nonetheless, Hachiman was a peculiar guy, and this conclusion was never wrong.

Today, one of the weaker “bookworms” had run to the Service Club’s activity room.

“Um, is this the Service Club?”

With short, ash-gray hair, a voice gentler than a girl’s, a face cuter than a girl’s, and a body smaller than a girl’s… but unfortunately, Saika Totsuka wasn’t a girl.

“Yes. Did Totsuka come here today with a request for us to help with something?”

Asakura Yuu was somewhat familiar with this distinctive character from his class.

    “Y-yes…”

Saika Totsuka nodded weakly, looking at Yukino Yukinoshita, who had an icy demeanor within the Service Club, and couldn’t help but feel a bit intimidated.

“Please, have a seat,” Yukino said, inviting him to sit down.

Saika Totsuka sat down nervously, took a deep breath, and prepared to speak…

    “Yaaas, Yuki-chan! Yuu-chan!”

Yui Yuigahama interrupted his attempt to speak.

Saika Totsuka gave Yui a slightly resentful glance.

“Chika?! What brings you here?” Yui Yuigahama once again showcased her remarkable ability to be overly familiar with everyone.

Saika Totsuka wasn’t as calm, his face turning red as he said, “Hiratsuka-sensei suggested I come here…”

“So that’s how it is. The Service Club hasn’t gotten any requests lately, and everyone’s been too busy studying for the monthly exams to even think about their troubles.” Yui Yuigahama put away her orange-colored backpack and pulled out a few cookies.

She placed them on the desk, amidst the shocked expressions of Asakura Yuu and Yukino Yukinoshita…

“I bought these cookies at a sweets shop yesterday… hey, what’s with the looks? I know I’m not a great cook, but…”

Yukino Yukinoshita cleared her throat, interrupting her.

“For now, let’s focus on the client’s requests. We can eat the cookies later.”

Yui looked disappointed and said, “Okay…”

Saika Totsuka watched the exchange between the two, and when they stopped talking, he spoke up in a weak voice, “I want to become more manly.”

    “Huh?”

Yui Yuigahama tilted her head, confused, “But Saika-kun, you’re already cute just the way you are. You don’t need to change.”

“C-cute?” Saika Totsuka looked like he was about to cry. “But I’m a boy!”

Who calls a boy cute, anyway?

And even if they did, it would be an older sister talking about a little boy, not a high school student!

“Sorry… are you really that concerned about this, Saika-kun?”

Yui Yuigahama thought for a moment, using the high emotional intelligence she had learned in the Service Club to respond.

“A person’s excellence has nothing to do with their manliness! (Historically) there have been cute boys who achieved great things, like…”

    Like who?

Asakura Yuu looked at Yui, whose eyes seemed to be spinning like a top, and subconsciously filled in the blank, “Ryōyū-kun, Panshang…”

    “Exactly!” Yui Yuigahama nodded eagerly.

Yukino Yukinoshita covered her face, “Asakura, don’t tease Yuigahama-san. The two you mentioned are beautiful men who charmed their kings, aren’t they?”

And where did you even learn about those foreign… or rather, Chinese historical figures, anyway?

“Sorry, I picked up too much fujoshi knowledge from Hina and it just slipped out. Sorry.” Asakura Yuu looked a bit embarrassed.

The downside of having a good memory is that you can remember everything, and that’s not always a good thing.

Saika Totsuka listened to their conversation and felt like his life was hopeless.

He pinned his hopes on the only man in the room, Asakura…

“Please, make me a man, Asakura-san…”

If it’s the school-wide admission of hottie, Asakura-san, he’d definitely be able to come up with a good plan, right?

Asakura Yuu, subjected to his hopeful gaze, said, “Totsuka, even if you look at me like that, I can’t think of anything.”

“How about, start by changing the way you refer to yourself?” Yukino Yukinoshita suggested.

“Yeah. Switching [I] to [Bruh] could instantly make you more manly… Hmm, no, that would just turn you into a delinquent character, Kawaii-chan.” Yui Yuigahama shook her head. “It’s not quite fitting.”

Asakura Yuu thought it was inappropriate too.

A cute boy with the looks of a beautiful youth suddenly calling himself [Bruh]… It’s like Zhang Fei trying to be cute and saying ‘Onii-chan’, just filled with a sense of wrongness.

“Totsuka, can I first ask why you want to boost your manliness?”

    “Because…”

Saika Totsuka recounted an incident from a few days ago.

It turned out that as the tennis club captain, he’d been the butt of a harsh joke by the club members; a few guys said they wanted to make a ‘Confession’ to him and date, prompting Saika Totsuka to want to become more of a man.

“I don’t really mind my appearance. Even in middle school, guys said I looked like a girl…”

“Jokes that disregard the feelings of the person involved are no different from bullying.” Yukino tucked her hair behind her ear and said, “Can people like that even join the tennis club? It’s unimaginable, Totsuka-san. As the captain, you should use your authority to kick them out of the club.”

    “Yukinoshita-san, don’t you advocate for positive problem-solving?”

    “…”

“Don’t tell me, you think turning Totsuka into a man is impossible, or something that can’t be done quickly?”

    Yukino shot him a glare.

    The members better shut up!

Even Yukino Yukinoshita had to admit that the man in front of her, Saika Totsuka, was brimming with girly charm…

“Well, being cute isn’t all bad. There’s at least one good thing about it, I think,” Asakura Yuu consoled.

    “What is it?”

“On the anonymous forum, your nickname is ‘Prince’, isn’t that cool?”

“I see.” Saika hadn’t known; he rarely paid attention to that.

“Yuu-chan’s nickname is…” Yui Yuigahama couldn’t bring herself to say it.

“[Scumbag]. I really don’t get it, with excellent grades, sports and everything else, and looking so handsome, where did Asakura Yuu tick them off? Do I even have anything they can pick on?”

Yukino let out a light laugh.

    “All of those things, actually.”

Gentle and understanding people always have a tough time, because the world is neither gentle nor understanding.

    Pretty cruel, huh?
