    Chapter 58 An Unexpected Occurrence

    Inside the tennis court.

A flying tennis ball was saved by Hachiman Hikigaya just before it hit the ground; he rolled on the floor, barely managing to recover it.

“Hikigaya-kun, are you okay?” Saika Totsuka glanced back for a moment before quickly turning his attention back to wait for the opponent’s shot.

    In his line of sight.

Asakura Yuu’s face carried a faint smile, his movements were light, yet the ball in his hand was full of power──fast and full of variations.

‘It’s almost like… an invincible demon king.’

Could this level really be achieved without any special practice?

Saika Totsuka felt defeated in tennis for the first time; he had always thought he was pretty good, having practiced since middle school and been praised by many, but facing a genius, the pressure was immense.

Saika Totsuka’s gaze shifted slightly to the group of students gathered outside the tennis court; he quickly realized they, too, wore expressions of unwillingness, just like him.

Perhaps, they had once faced a similar situation… being crushed by a genius as an ordinary person, making all their efforts vanish as if they had never existed.

For the elite students of a prestigious school, it was undoubtedly a heavy blow.

The talent they possessed was nothing special; they must have doubted it at some point.

Not to mention a phrase that everyone often hears… if geniuses work hard, then what’s the point of ordinary people working hard?

    “Bam!”

Saika Totsuka moved into position early, predicting Asakura Yuu’s shot.

The tennis ball flew towards a blind spot on Yui Yuigahama’s side!

If the demon king couldn’t be defeated, then break through his ‘maid’!

Sorry, Yuigahama-san, but your existence is his weakness now!

    “Whoosh!!”

The tennis ball zoomed past Yui Yuigahama’s feet…

    “40:15” the umpire shouted.

“…Yuu-chan, I’m sorry,” Yui Yuigahama panted out.

The current score is 4:2 in games, with the match being decided in 6 games──winning 6 games means victory.

“It’s fine, our main goal isn’t this, just have fun.”

Asakura Yuu spoke casually, seemingly not taking the match to heart.

In fact, that was true; their purpose was to help Saika Totsuka assert his presence, so winning or losing didn’t matter.

“Game point, start of the 7th game!”

    Following the umpire’s announcement.

    The match continued.

As Hachiman Hikigaya and Saika Totsuka’s strategy to overpower Yui Yuigahama began to pay off, their goal shifted from countering Asakura Yuu to finding Yui’s weakness.

Although it sounds a bit underhanded, avoiding strong opponents to find an opening is a common tactic used in many sports, and it undoubtedly increases the chances of winning compared to a direct confrontation.

    One point.

    Two points.

    One game.

    Two games.

The score was tied, and the match had entered its most critical phase – the deciding game.

    “Whoosh.”

As another ball flew past Yui Yuigahama, the situation took a turn for the worse.

    “0:15.”

“Yuu-chan, I’m running out of energy,” Yui Yuigahama said, her voice laced with fatigue, reaching Asakura Yuu’s ears.

Tennis is an extremely physically demanding sport, and Yui, being an ordinary high school girl who didn’t participate in any sports clubs, was reaching her limit after ten small games.

“It’s okay, you can rely on me more from now on.”

Yui Yuigahama responded with a gentle “Hmm.”

The word “rely” somehow felt a bit embarrassing.

    [Yui Yuigahama’s affection level +2, points +2000]

The situation didn’t improve much after that.

Even though Asakura Yuu took on some of Yui’s pressure, doubles tennis is still a team effort, and it’s almost impossible for one person to win alone, unless Asakura Yuu could exchange for a tennis Skill, which was unlikely since the system hadn’t provided any sports-related abilities in months.

Besides, even if such an opportunity arose, Asakura Yuu probably wouldn’t exchange for it, as he was confident in his own athletic abilities and wouldn’t waste points on a Skill like that.

    “This is the last point.”

Hachiman Hikigaya muttered, watching the tennis ball fly towards him.

You see, near the station in Soubu High School, there’s a unique sea breeze in the morning that changes direction at noon and in the afternoon.

Most people might not notice such details, but as the solitary hero, Hachiman Hikigaya could sense the changes in the wind.

“This is a magic shot that only I can make. I’ll finish with this one!”

Hachiman Hikigaya fixed his gaze on the tennis ball and swung his racket with a baseball player’s stance.

    “Boom.”

The tennis ball soared through the air.

    Meanwhile.

Yui Yuigahama aimed for the ball’s landing point but found that it had suddenly been blown off course by the wind.

‘This is the last ball, I have to catch it!’ With that conviction, Yui rushed towards the tennis ball.

But she was so focused on chasing the ball that she didn’t notice her position was already close to the edge of the court, and if she continued, she would definitely crash into the net!

    A few seconds later.

    ‘This idiot!’

Asakura Yuu, having anticipated her actions, took a step forward and caught Yui in his arms, and with a “thud,” the two of them collided and stuck to the net.

    “Yui!!! Are you okay?!”

Yumiko Miura, who had just run over to watch, rushed onto the tennis court.

She glanced at Yukino Yukinoshita, who was also showing a worried expression in the distance, and shot her a displeased look before squatting down beside Yui and asking with concern: “Are you hurt?”

    “A little.”

Yui Yuigahama felt a bit of pain in her ankle, probably because she had twisted it, but it wasn’t a big deal.

    “How about you, Yuu?”

“I’m fine, you take care of Yui first and check her out.”

“Okay, got it. Yui, let’s go sit down over there and take a break. It doesn’t matter if we lose this match, and next time I’ll help you get back in the game.” Yumiko Miura said as she helped Yui up, and the two of them sat down on the nearby chairs.

Seeing Yui leave the court, the surrounding male students cheered at Asakura Yuu, basically saying “We won!! Yeah!!”

“What are you cheering about? Are you happy to see a girl get hurt?!” Yumiko Miura glared at them with a fierce gaze, and the male students immediately fell silent and looked away.

Saika Totsuka and Hachiman walked over at this time.

“Yuigahama-san, are you okay?” Saika asked in a hurry.

Hachiman regretfully said: “It’s all my fault…”

To win the match and let a classmate get hurt, it wasn’t something a man should do.

“Hikigaya-san, don’t blame yourself… it was my fault for not paying attention.”

Yui Yuigahama spoke words of consolation, and she had always been gentle, never putting the blame on others.

“I’ll go get the first-aid kit, the infirmary is just nearby.” Saika Totsuka said.

“I’ll go.” Yukino Yukinoshita, who had walked over, took on the responsibility.

Saika Totsuka seemed to want to say something, but Yumiko spoke up: “Let her go. She’s been saying Yui is her friend, but she couldn’t even protect her, and when she saw Yui fall, she just stood there watching, you’d think they were strangers! It’s infuriating!”

Yukino didn’t say much when she heard Yumiko’s words.

Even though Yumiko’s words seemed a little accusatory, she still felt a pang of regret.

She wasn’t good at expressing concern, and of course, she was at a loss for words when faced with something like this.

Yui was one of Yukino’s few friends her own age.

In fact, you could say she was Yukino’s only friend…

This time, she hadn’t taken good care of Yui, but next time…no, there wouldn’t be a next time!
