Chapter 61 Contradictions Begin to Surface
The first day of the monthly exams.
During the lunch break after the exams, Asakura Yuu sat in the back row of the classroom, discussing the test content with the guys, while Hachiman was alone at his seat, playing on his phone.
He wasn’t fond of getting close to the popular kids, though their relationship wasn’t terrible enough to be in hot water.
But Hachiman fundamentally disliked socializing.
‘After all, solitude is the best.’
Hachiman thought to himself, noticing that the popular group was missing a girl today──Yumiko Miura, the queen bee of the class, with a gaze like a bear, no, like a lion.
Hachiman always avoided looking her in the eye; as an outsider, getting involved with someone like her was out of the question.
Halfway through his coffee milk, Hachiman stuffed the straw into the carton as Yumiko returned.
But she wasn’t the only one who came back; another girl followed… Minami Sagami, with her wine-red short hair and fairly attractive face.
If Asakura Yuu’s group was the pinnacle of the caste system, then Minami Sagami and her 2 girlfriends were the second-highest caste, according to Hachiman Hikigaya’s view.
‘Whether it’s Miura or Sagami, they seem the same to me.’
Commonality: both had a certain degree of disdain for Hachiman, the class outcast.
Yumiko Miura didn’t show it openly, but Minami Sagami made no effort to hide it.
Hachiman Hikigaya was indifferent, though.
His friend was Asakura Yuu, not this secondary Brahmin-like Kshatriya girl.
This wasn’t India; making friends didn’t require checking someone’s caste.
If Asakura Yuu didn’t care, then Hachiman certainly wouldn’t either.
Being content with the status quo wasn’t a bad thing; he disliked changes in his interpersonal relationships even more, since Hachiman wasn’t good at establishing and maintaining social connections.
“Miura, did you splash water on my face when you were washing your hands?”
“Oh, really?” Yumiko Miura felt like Minami Sagami was provoking her, but still apologized out of politeness: “Sorry.”
“You…”
Minami Sagami gritted her teeth and said, “What kind of attitude is that? If you’re not willing, then don’t apologize!”
“Oh, then give me back that apology.” Yumiko Miura and Minami Sagami’s relationship had never been good.
Since the start of school, the two would argue over trivial matters every now and then.
Yumiko’s attitude towards this ‘enemy’ was clear.
“Are you looking for a fight?!”
“You think I’d splash you in the face if you washed your hands? Who’s the one who wants to fight?” Yumiko muttered under her breath. “What a drag, even going to the bathroom to touch up my makeup I run into you.”
“Who are you calling a drag?”
“You, obviously.”
“Girls can be such a hassle,” thought Hachiman Hikigaya from his spot, watching the drama unfold.
“Sagami, Yumiko, please don’t fight! We still have to eat lunch, right?”
Yui Yuigahama tried to play peacemaker.
“Yuigahama, you’ve already become friends with her so quickly?” Minami Sagami said with a playful tone.
“I’m friends with Sagami too.” Yui Yuigahama chuckled awkwardly.
“You’re just the same as last year.”
Minami Sagami fell silent and returned to her seat.
Seeing her leave, Yumiko turned to Yui and said, “That girl is so weird. Yui, you shouldn’t be friends with her, she doesn’t even treat you like a friend.”
“Haha~ Sagami’s alright.” Yui Yuigahama laughed it off, trying to move on.
But Minami Sagami’s pride was stung by Miura’s words:
“Yuigahama was my friend last year, what’s it to you?”
“Still calling her by her last name, tsk…that kind of ‘friend’? It’s really hilarious.”
……
“What’s going on? Is the second ‘Yui Conquest War’ about to begin?”
Hina Ebina whispered to her companions.
Last time it was Yumiko Miura and Yukino Yukinoshita vying for Yui Yuigahama’s affections, today it’s Minami Sagami and Yumiko?
Yui must be incredibly popular!
Hina Ebina felt like she could almost accept yuri after all this.
‘Did Yui used to hang out with these girls?’ Asakura Yuu wondered to herself.
Yui Yuigahama’s survival strategy is to cater to others and act in accordance with the atmosphere, so she can easily get everyone’s likes.
After all, no one hates a person who speaks nicely and chats happily, let alone Yui Yuigahama is still a natural fool, which is easy to fool.
Such characters joined the recharge group after school starts and became the lubricant character.
In contrast, the Minami Sagami group that lost Yui Yuigahama should be a little embarrassed…
‘It’s pretty normal for Sagami to develop a dislike for Yui because of this.’
When school started, her friends suddenly ditched her to join a higher social circle, even stepping on her.
Minami Sagami resents Yui for this… is that some kind of envy of the wealthy?
As Asakura Yuu was thinking.
The argument between Yumiko and Minami Sagami was coming to an end……
“Humph.”
“Humph.”
They ended things with 2 cold sniffs.
Soon, the classroom air returned to normal.
This kind of scene was almost seen a few times every month, and many students present had come to treat it as a standard act.
…………
After school.
Since there was still a day left until the exams, there was plenty of time before the winner of Yukino Yukinoshita and Asakura Yuu’s match was revealed.
“I’ll take this cup.”
Yukino pointed to one of the cups in front of her.
The tea cups in front of them all had patterns on them – cats, dogs, bears, tigers, wolves…
They were all depicted in a Q-version style.
“If the president chooses the cat, I’ll take this one,” Asakura Yuu said, picking up one of the cups.
“But, Yuu-chan, I want the one you have…”
“There’s a dog over there, isn’t there? Mine’s a wolf.”
“Huh? Isn’t that a Husky?” Yui Yuigahama asked, looking shocked.
Asakura Yuu was about to retort, but after examining the cup, he wasn’t so sure: “…It does look a bit like one, I guess. The cartoon pattern makes it hard to tell.”
He put the cup down: “Do you want it?”
“Never mind, I’ll choose the Shiba Inu instead,” Yui Yuigahama said, settling for second best.
If it wasn’t a dog, she wouldn’t like it – wolves were just too scary to look at.
“Let’s use the rest of these cups when we have guests over.”
The two girls nodded in agreement.
After putting the cups away in the new cabinet, Asakura Yuu checked out the electric kettle they had bought yesterday and the tea leaves Yukino Yukinoshita had brought from home.
He filled the kettle with water and pressed the button to boil it, then sat down at the table.
Yukino was reading a light novel, and Yui was playing on her phone – despite having a mock exam tomorrow, they were both as carefree as ever, treating the club activities as a way to relax.
“Will you be making the tea later, President? I don’t know much about it.”
“Mm-hm,” Yukino replied, nodding, then looked at Yui…
“Yuigahama-san, do you prefer black tea or green tea?”
There was no response.
After a brief silence, Yui Yuigahama seemed to snap back to attention, smiling at Yukino: “Either is fine.”
“What were you looking at, Yui?”
“…I was watching a video.”
Yui Yuigahama naturally switched her phone from the anonymous forum to a YouTube video and showed it to Asakura Yuu.
Even though the post she had seen earlier had upset her, Yui didn’t want to bring the bad mood to the people in front of her.
[2Y from class 2F is a slut who’ll date anyone for money.]
The rumor used an abbreviation, hiding the information, but Yui knew it was about her.
Because in their class, she was the only girl with a name starting with Y.
‘It’s a post with no heat, so it should be okay, right.’
All Yui could do was pray that it would stay that way.
