Chapter 63 The Definition of a Harem
“I’m the type who cares about my reputation, so I make it a point to check the comments every day and record the ones that insult me, just in case I find the owner of the post in the future and can get my revenge.”
Hina Ebina noticed Asakura Yuu’s expression and chuckled: “Hey, didn’t you tell me to drop my act, Yuu-kun? This is what I’m really like when I’m not pretending. Although, I didn’t lie about being an otaku girl.”
“I totally agree with that approach,” Yukino nodded.
It’s only natural to crush those who spew hate towards you – that’s what normal people do.
As mentioned before, repaying kindness with kindness isn’t Yukino Yukinoshita’s style.
“And then?” Asakura Yuu picked up his tea cup and took a sip.
He had always known that Hina Ebina was pretending, but he didn’t expect her to have such a twisted personality in private.
This girl’s pretty bad too.
Maybe the only real idiot in the popular crowd is Yumiko.
“Where was I… Ah yes, the gossip about you. Apparently, someone posted a thread asking about your relationship with Yui 2 days ago. It didn’t get much attention, only about a few dozen comments. Our school’s anonymous forum only has around 400 users, after all.”
Soubu High School has just over 600 students, with about 200 per grade.
Japan’s birth rate is really low, so Soubu High is actually one of the more populated schools.
Other schools have even fewer students.
But with a usage rate of over 2-thirds, that’s not a bad number.
The minds of high school students can be really dark, no wonder every school has a counseling room.
Whether it’s effective or not is a different story.
“Gossip about Asakura-kun? From what I know, the anonymous forum is all about bashing him,” Yukino Yukinoshita said in a flat tone, never missing an opportunity to throw some shade at Asakura Yuu.
“That’s a pretty one-sided view, don’t you think? It’s more like 50-50. The girls will attack the girls related to him, like me and Yumiko. And recently, you’ve joined our little family, Yukinoshita-san, getting targeted by the girls who like Yuu-kun.”
Yukino felt like retorting at that moment.
What’s there to be happy about?
They’re actually linking me to Asakura-kun – those idiots must be suffering from premature Alzheimer’s!
Not that Alzheimer’s is something to be taken lightly, but… the people who slander others on anonymous forums are 100% brain-dead.
“There’s also a rumor going around that, in the eyes of some guys, Yumiko is the main wife, I’m the concubine, Yui is the maid, and as for Yukinoshita-san, they say you’re the mistress. A bunch of people are gossiping about our relationships, treating it like a joke, but I also often go around gossiping about others, so I’m not really bothered by it.”
Hina Ebina finished speaking and picked up her tea cup, taking a sip.
Her glasses sparkled slightly due to the sunlight.
“Is Yuigahama-san not coming to the Service Club today because of this?” Yukino asked.
“Probably. If it was just a discussion about her relationship with Yuu, Yui shouldn’t be that bothered, right? Although in the past, no one would notice her, so rumors wouldn’t reach her, but Yui’s heart isn’t that fragile.” Hina Ebina chuckled: “Yukinoshita-san, you know, don’t you? Yui likes Yuu, but it’s probably the kind of liking you have for a friend, not to the point of a romantic relationship yet.”
Under these circumstances, if there were rumors of them dating, Yui probably wouldn’t get angry, and might even be a bit happy?
“She likes…” Yukino recalled some details of how Yui Yuigahama and Asakura Yuu interacted.
Sorry, but I completely didn’t see it coming.
‘I don’t know Yuigahama-san well enough,’ Yukino concluded.
Otherwise, with 2 club members’ relationships almost developing into something romantic, not having any reaction would be too embarrassing!
“Yuu is also aware, isn’t he? Yui has feelings for him, right?”
“It’s hard not to notice.”
That affection level is skyrocketing…it’s like an automatic white flag, ridiculously so.
“Then why?” Yukino suddenly wanted to ask a question.
“Why Yuu doesn’t respond to those feelings? You should ask him; I’m not entirely sure.” Even Hina Ebina, with her strong ability to read the atmosphere, couldn’t read minds, so she wasn’t clear about some of Asakura Yuu’s thoughts.
“Because I don’t want to date casually and then have to break up. If possible, I want a girlfriend who can understand me, and whom I can understand, but even if such a person exists, we’ll likely end up parting ways due to various difficulties. She’ll marry a stranger I’ve never met, and I’ll marry a woman I don’t like. I don’t want that.”
Yukino received this response and looked at Asakura Yuu with an expression that said, ‘What kind of fool are you?’
Not responding to a girl’s feelings because you don’t want to break up…?
Think about this logic yourself; is it reasonable?
With this kind of thinking, you’ll probably end up alone for the rest of your life!
“Don’t look at me like that. I told you a month ago that breaking up involves suffering, so maintaining distance is the best choice.”
“I thought you were joking back then.”
After spending 2 months together and getting to know him better, Yukino even thought that Asakura Yuu’s “harem” was just a joke, since Asakura Yuu wasn’t a daydreamer, he had a strong sense of motivation, and his words usually became actions, he wasn’t one to brag, and was quite a practical person.
But it turned out, he really did want to start a “harem”, and the reason was…
because he was afraid of breaking up?
Yukino was aware that Asakura Yuu’s “harem” didn’t refer to the ancient concept of one man having multiple wives, but rather a perfect little circle where everyone enjoyed their youth, indulging in a false sense of bliss, and Asakura Yuu, as the core, would do his best to maintain this space.
This was what he meant by “harem”.
But… this was all just an illusion, and no matter how wonderful it was, it would eventually come to an end.
As people grew up and left their student life behind to enter society, how long could Asakura Yuu’s “harem” last?
The Service Club’s atmosphere was great now, and it could even be said that he had established the embryo of a “harem”, but once they graduated, everything would disappear.
The way they played their roles, with himself as the president, Asakura Yuu as the member who loved to bicker, and Yui as the tsukkomi… this ambiguous atmosphere would eventually come to an end, since nothing lasts forever, right?
“Asakura, member,” Yukino said seriously, “I still suggest you try dating a girl you have feelings for.”
“You should experience the pain of breaking up, and besides, there are many couples who grow old together, it may be a low-probability event, but it’s not impossible!”
“…” Asakura Yuu looked away, no longer speaking.
It seemed like he was hiding a lot from himself… Yukino thought.
Hina Ebina shared her opinion: “Yuu-kun just hasn’t met someone he really likes yet, or else he’d definitely jump at the chance like a burning flame.”
Worrying too much would prevent someone from living their life to the fullest.
“In that case, Yumiko is really pitiful.”
