Chapter 8 Yui Yuigahama
“Speaking of which, I’ve been at this school for a year now, and I still haven’t gone to the seaside nearby.”
“Doesn’t matter, that kind of thing.”
“It’s been a year, and I still haven’t found a girl who’d let me have a harem.”
“Doesn’t matter, that kind of thing.”
“I took in a homeless beautiful girl yesterday, and I don’t know what to do with her now. Life is tough…”
“Doesn’t matter… wait, what? A homeless beautiful girl?” Araragi Koyomi suddenly turned his head, his hair forming a question mark above his head.
Hachiman Hikigaya glanced at the top of his head.
Why can his hair change shape?
That’s not something a normal person can do, right?
“Yeah, a blonde-haired ojou-sama. I rescued her from the guards…”
Asakura said halfway, Araragi Koyomi chuckled and shook his head, turning to Hachiman Hikigaya: “Hachiman, look at this kid, he’s so desperate he’s starting to daydream.”
“Yeah, trying to apply drama plot devices to real life, I stopped doing that a long time ago,” Hachiman Hikigaya said, equally unconvinced.
If anything, it’s the people who believe in such bizarre developments that are the minority, right?
“Hmph, don’t believe it then.”
The conversation fell silent for about ten seconds.
“Hachiman, have you encountered any difficulties lately?”
Asakura put away his bento box and propped himself up on the long bench, gazing up at the sky.
The weather was pretty good today.
His gaze dropped.
On the edge of the school building, several black crows without a single speck of impurity were dozing off with their eyes closed.
If you wait until the sunset paints the earth with a crimson hue, you might still hear the shouts of the baseball team on the field, but unfortunately, the sports clubs at Soubu High aren’t that strong, and they can’t even pass the regional selections…
Asakura lifted his gaze again, emptying his mind.
Do the clouds in the sky dream of the cold winds from Siberia?
Will the polar bears that love chasing penguins ever get to fulfill their dreams?
Hachiman Hikigaya watched Asakura gaze off into space and said, “Difficulties? None for now, and probably none in the future either.”
“Really? You’re not just pretending to be strong? Don’t go home and cry into your pillow, or I’ll feel sorry for you as your friend,” Asakura said, turning around and pressing down on his shoulder: “By the way, why don’t you try creating some difficulties for yourself? Or find an excuse.”
His eyes sparkled as he said, “Hachiman, do any of your friends have difficulties? Not you, but one of your friends!”
Hachiman Hikigaya: “?”
Are you crazy or something?
You want to create difficulties when there aren’t any, do you think my life is too easy or what?
I’m really sorry, but my high school life is going pretty well so far.
Except for being constantly given the cold shoulder by the girls in my class, everything else is pretty okay.
And, “I have a friend” – that kind of excuse is outdated now, right?
“Asakura, this has something to do with that club you mentioned, doesn’t it? I recall the president being a big shot in J class…” Araragi Koyomi guessed.
A half month ago, Asakura, who had always been a member of the Going Home Club, suddenly said he wanted to join a club, which surprised him.
Later, upon learning that there was a beautiful girl president, he instantly understood.
Men are like that, after all – they’re driven by their desires.
“Shizuka-chan said our club doesn’t have enough activities, so I thought I’d take the initiative to find some requests.”
“As for what you said about being a big shot… I suppose that’s true.”
“Yukino Yukinoshita, the idol of Soubu High, her father is a prefectural assembly member, and her family runs a company.” Asakura smiled lazily at Hachiman: “What do you think of a girl like that, Hachiman?”
He remembered that Hachiman’s dream was to be a househusband.
“I hate romance in high school.” Hachiman Hikigaya’s dead fish eyes drifted towards the rooftop door.
He felt like escaping from this place right now.
You guys know the 3 great illusions of life, right?
The first one: when your phone vibrates.
The second one: when you think you can counterattack.
The third one: when you think she likes you.
Believing in any of these will make you a joke!
So, everyone, give up on romance!
Asakura smiled gently: “Hachiman, have you heard the phrase ‘life is short, fall in love, youngster’?”
“No, no, no, it’s ‘life is short, fall in love, young girl’.” Hachiman Hikigaya corrected.
“What’s with that, Hachiman? You seem to know a lot about romance. Have you never had a moment where you felt your heart skip a beat?”
Upon hearing this, Hachiman Hikigaya self-deprecatingly said: “When I get excited, I lose; when I confess, I get rejected immediately – that was my middle school life.”
Asakura patted his shoulder and didn’t say anything.
After a few seconds, he forced a laugh and said:
“If I were a girl, maybe, possibly, probably, I might consider dating you.”
“This is infuriating! You really don’t want to date me, do you?” Hachiman Hikigaya covered his face, feeling like he was about to cry.
Araragi Koyomi took out his phone to check the time and saw that there was still a while before lunch break ended.
“Let’s head back for now; the wind on the rooftop is really strong.”
“Alright.”
…………
The afternoon classes made him drowsy, but Asakura managed to struggle through.
After school.
Since he didn’t have a part-time job today, Asakura planned to check out the Service Club first before heading home.
Mainly because there was a run-away girl he had just taken in at home, and he wasn’t too reassured about leaving her alone, fearing she might get caught by the security guards.
As he walked down the hallway, Asakura heard a familiar voice near the vending machine.
“Yahallo, Little Yu!”
Asakura turned around to see the girl who was acting overly familiar with him.
She had pink short hair with a cute bun on top, and was wearing the uniform of their school, Souryo High.
Notably, her jacket was unbuttoned, revealing the white blouse underneath.
At first glance, she seemed like a typical gal character.
“What’s up?” Asakura asked, to which Yui Yuigahama placed her hands in front of her and asked like a lovesick girl, “What are you planning to do next, Little Yu?”
“I’m heading to the club room, and you, Yuigahama? Are you going sightseeing or something?”
Asakura inserted a coin into the vending machine and selected a drink.
He and Yui Yuigahama weren’t particularly close.
They were just ordinary friends; in his social circle, the person he was closest to was Yumiko Miura, a classmate from last year, followed by Hayato Hayama.
To truly connect with someone, you had to reveal your true self first.
Asakura didn’t like people who always wore a social mask.
Although Yumiko Miura wasn’t very emotionally intelligent, she was straightforward and, once you got used to her, it was actually comfortable to be around her.
In comparison,
Yui Yuigahama was too good at reading the atmosphere, always trying to gauge people’s reactions, making it hard to figure out what she was really thinking.
“Yeah, I’m going! And, Little Yu, you can just call me Yui,” Yui Yuigahama said, hurrying to his side.

“Call you by your name?”
“Well… you always call Yumiko by her name, right?”
Asakura nodded, pausing for a few seconds before saying, “…Yui.”
It was his first time being asked by a girl to call her by her name like that.
“Hehe,” Yui Yuigahama giggled.
Asakura turned to look at her, smiling and teasing, “If you laugh like that, you’ll start weird rumors.”
“I’m happy, Little Yu, that you’re calling me by my name.”
