    Chapter 82 Pretense Turned Reality

“We sort of get the job, but Isshiki-chan, why did you come to the Service Club?”

Yukino Yukinoshita set down her teacup.

For this kind of request, it’d be best to ask Asakura Yuu directly, since she and Yuigahama-san might not be much help.

After all, according to the client’s request, this job only requires persuasion, not catching the main culprit.

Isshiki Iroha’s gaze shifted to Asakura Yuu, as if she hadn’t said anything, yet seemed to have said everything.

    ‘It’s all his fault.’

“So, during the last study session, you came to ask for Yuu-chan’s help, Iroha-chan?”

Yui Yuigahama quickly pieced together the situation.

Yukino Yukinoshita, however, was a bit lost; she wasn’t part of the popular crowd, and her interactions with Asakura Yuu were pretty much limited to the walk home after school.

“Yeah, but Miura-senpai got jealous, so I had to give it a break for a while. Then when I asked the upperclassman alone later, he wasn’t up for it.”

” stringing along a girl who likes you is pretty despicable…” Yukino said earnestly, taking a sip of her tea.

She had suggested before that Asakura Yuu should try dating someone, because being afraid of heartbreak and refusing to date was like refusing to eat for fear of choking.

Of course, Yukino herself had no intention of being that ‘someone.’

Even if Asakura Yuu needed a bitter romance to grow, Yukino wasn’t about to throw herself into the fire pit unless he spoke up.

Asakura Yuu’s expression quickly chilled: “…You’re calling me a despicable person, President? Who did I treat badly? You or Yui? Have I even touched a hair on your head?”

What happens between me and Yumiko is none of your business, do you think too highly of yourself?

Joking around was one thing, I got what you meant, but to actually think I’m toying with Yumiko?

You think I don’t like her?

“No, but I do think you’re handling this poorly.” Yukino put down her teacup.

“Should I go confess to Yumiko then?” Asakura Yuu took a deep breath, trying to keep his tone even: “I’m curious, President, what do you think you know about me? What do you understand? Think about it, we see each other for less than ten hours a week. Do you really think you’ve figured me out in 3 months?”

“Please, I’m begging you, stop spouting your subjective opinions about things you don’t understand. Even if Yumiko likes me, and I like her, what does that have to do with you? If we get married in the future, with your atrocious relationship with her, you wouldn’t even make a bridesmaid.”

Asakura Yuu was feeling extremely uncomfortable inside.

It was the first time he felt displeased in the Service Club, unable to even maintain the usual discussion pattern he had with Yukino.

His words were filled with loopholes and sophistry.

Was a Platonic romance considered scum?

Was maintaining a less-than-lover ambiguous status with more than 2 girls without touching their bodies considered scum?

These topics, Asakura Yuu had no mood to consider at this moment.

It was the first time he heard Yukino call him scum with such a serious tone.

    “I… I’m sorry.”

Yukino could clearly sense his foul mood and quickly explained, “That’s not what I meant… Member Asakura, you don’t have to listen to me, you can take your time.”

She didn’t understand Asakura Yuu’s past, didn’t know what experiences he had with Koyomi.

But that last sentence definitely stepped on a mine, and Yukino regretted it deeply.

“President Yukinoshita, don’t you think what you’re saying is a bit contradictory? You said I’m stringing people along, yet also that there’s no need to hurry.”

If Asakura Yuu didn’t know Yukino had some affection for him and the promise they made at the start of the school year, his expression would have already slipped.

“Who I like, who likes me, does it concern you? Who are you to me? In the end, you’re just the president of the same club…” Asakura Yuu’s voice trailed off, his expression tinged with regret.

    A few seconds passed…

“I apologize, President, I lost control of my emotions. What I just said was me venting my bad feelings. Let’s set this topic aside for now.”

Losing one’s temper at a girl wasn’t something a guy should do, let alone someone aiming for a harem king, he quickly realized this fact.

[Asakura Yuu] shouldn’t have done that, couldn’t do that.

Recently, Yumiko Miura’s confession had caused Asakura Yuu some turmoil.

He was pondering, what if Yumiko officially confessed one day, should he accept?

    Beside Asakura Yuu’s seat.

Yui Yuigahama was seeing him angry for the first time… Or rather, almost no one in the school had seen him lose his temper.

Always optimistic, the Asakura Yuu who would actively think of ways to face difficulties, even when he was rumored about on an anonymous forum for half a year, only faced it all with a teasing attitude.

Why would he get angry over a single sentence from Yukino?

    Heartbreak?

    Or something else?

‘… Do I really know much about him?’ Yui Yuigahama couldn’t help but ask herself.

It’s not like there are many, or even that it’s a little, maybe just more than Yuki-chan has?

I’m not really clear about his family situation, and even during middle school, Koyomi didn’t know much about it either.

As for mutual understanding, Yui discovered that up until now, it’s always been Asakura Yuu who’s been understanding and considerate of her, while her own understanding of him has only scratched the surface, stopping at his excellent exterior and interesting personality.

    This kind of liking…

Yui Yuigahama couldn’t help but admit, her liking was superficial, like a lost traveler chasing after a bright light without knowing if it was the last hope or the final despair.

    ‘My relationship with him…’

Yes, just like he said, putting aside their initial promise, they’re just ordinary friends who’ve known each other for 3 months, not even in the same class, and hardly ever meet up in private, so under these circumstances, it’s only natural to be resented for presumptuously evaluating someone else’s emotional issues with a condescending attitude, and it’s not just once either.

Yukino Yukinoshita’s eyebrows drooped, looking somewhat dejected.

She had thought she’d entered Asakura Yuu’s inner circle, or at the very least, understood 30% of him, but now it seems that was just her own self-delusion.

The forest in his heart, she had never set foot in.

“So, are you going to take on my request, senpai?”

Isshiki Iroha chuckled, seemingly ignoring the previous conversation as she changed the subject.

“I have no objections, but there’s a big risk in pretending to be a couple with me; if you can’t handle being the subject of rumors, I suggest you give up now.”

    Asakura Yuu’s expression turned serious.

Many people at Soubu High School like him, but there are also many who dislike him.

Among them, there will be those who spread rumors, and although it’s only a part of those who dislike him, if Isshiki Iroha is recognized as ‘Asakura Yuu’s girlfriend’, she’ll definitely be affected by the anti-fans, and the severity might be even more exaggerated than what Yui experienced.

“I don’t have any other guy I can trust aside from you, senpai.”

“…How about Hayama? He shouldn’t refuse.”

Hayato Hayama is in need of a shield to deflect the girls swarming around him.

“Uh…I don’t really like him, though; his appearance is okay, I guess, but I don’t want to be his tool. Plus, Asakura-senpai, you’re more famous than Hayama-senpai, so if I can succeed, it’ll be a great achievement for me.”

So she’s aware of how Hayama would react, huh.

“Let me make one thing clear… first, I won’t make our relationship public, after all, we’re just pretending, not a real couple. Second, dating is fine, but we can’t go to love hotels, and holding hands should be done in moderation, no kissing. Lastly, we can change how we address each other, but in public, we’ll still use formal language.”

    “Senior, you’re being a bother.”

“If it’s a bother, go find someone else.”

“I’m just trying to protect you from getting too deeply involved with me, so you won’t suffer in the future, why don’t you understand?”

“Or are you saying you want to make our fake relationship real?”

“Senior, you really don’t understand how girls think, if I’ve already chosen to be with you, then I’ve already thought through the consequences.”

“Your trust leaves me at a loss for words.”

“No matter what, it’s not like I’ll be at a loss,” Isshiki Irohame said with conviction: “If I get taken advantage of, Senior will definitely help me, right?”

“What you’re saying isn’t entirely accurate, if you’re mistreated because of me, I’ll make sure to punish the perpetrator severely, and on this point, you’re not wrong.”

Asakura Yuu was referring to things beyond rumors, after all, if they were to settle all the potential rumors that might arise in the future, the entire student body of Soubu High School would be implicated.

“So, from now on, until this situation is resolved, we’re a couple?”

Asakura Yuu interrupted: “Emphasis on ‘fake’ couple.”

“Senior, you’re so uptight, you must not be very popular with girls.”

“Sorry to say, but I’m quite popular.”
