Chapter 114 Matou Shinji
Matou Shinji, a prominent student at Homunhara Academy’s Second Year Class C.
Consistently ranked in the top five scores annually, vice president and deputy captain of the Archery Club, and the eldest son of Shin’yama Town’s prestigious family.
His appearance is decent, and his skills are unmatched, making him highly popular among girls, with a constant crowd of female admirers around him.
This is Matou Shinji as seen in the anime *The World*.
In reality, the Matou family is a prominent Magecraft lineage in Fuyuki City.
As the eldest son of the Matou family, Matou Shinji naturally comes into contact with things from the Mysterious Side.
The only thing he regrets is…Matou Shinji has no Magic Circuit.
In other words, he lacks the ability to become a Magus.
Despite being born into a Magecraft lineage, Matou Shinji has no Magic Circuit and cannot become a Magus. This self-doubt and his gradual transformation into a Distorted individual have made him increasingly unstable.
If he had no ability at all, he might not have turned out like that.
It’s because he has just a little bit of talent that Matou Shinji gradually developed the “I’m better than others” delusion.
However, his surroundings include someone with an Absolute level of Magus talent—Sakura. In the context of the Matou family, which values talent above all else, Matou Shinji is treated like a useless Air despite having no ability himself. Therefore, he has adopted a dismissive attitude toward his surroundings to maintain his self-worth.
“Shinji, you look down on others while harboring feelings of inferiority yourself. Even though you like to look down on those around you, the people you look down on are actually above you. You’re just trapped by your own sense of inferiority…Your mind is empty. The only thing you believe in is yourself, but your true identity and abilities are no different from a balloon. If the wind blows around you, you’ll change the path you walked earlier.”—Tohsaka Rin.
Tohsaka Rin accurately described Matou Shinji’s pitiful existence, but this doesn’t change the fact that he is an individual piece of garbage.
Kuzuki learned about Matou Shinji through a Games project in a previous life. In the anime, Matou Shinji is portrayed as a Distorted worm-like creature that makes you want to vomit.
While in real life, Matou Shinji doesn’t seem as unbearable as he does in the anime.
But if the Holy Grail War were to begin, Matou Shinji would inevitably fall into his predetermined path.
On the street, three lively female high school students are gathered around Matou Shinji, talking and laughing.
One of them says, “Shinji-kun, I heard you’re friends with that Brownie guy from Moe Town. Is that true?” The other two girls are also curious and staring at him. (Brownie: A type of brown-clad, benevolent fairy from Irish folklore.)
“Huh? That old fool is just a kind-hearted idiot. I only know him, not that he’s my friend!” Matou Shinji dismissively denies this with an exaggerated tone.
Despite his dismissive attitude, his mind flashes back to a familiar figure.
A red-haired man with brown eyes—someone who will help anyone, no matter how difficult or painful the task—who never complains.
After thinking of Emiya Shirou, Matou Shinji is about to leave when one of the girls stops him.
“Hey, isn’t that Teacher Kuzuki? Should we go over and say hi?”
Matou Shinji turned his head to look away just in time to see Kuzuki aim his Line of Sight at him.
Matou Shinji looked away and said, “That ice block Teacher? Not a bit fun. Get lost, like you never saw me.”
A girl beside him nervously said, “No, Teacher Kuzuki saw us. This sudden disappearance is kind of awkward… huh… he’s coming this way.”
Kuzuki, wearing a suit and glasses, walked over to Matou Shinji.
“Matou, since we’ve met, I have some things to tell you.”
“Hm? We don’t have any connection, do we? Teacher Kuzuki. If you’re offering help, I must politely decline.”
Matou Shinji naturally refused Kuzuki and waved his hand, saying, “Goodbye, Teacher Kuzuki.”
He then turned around and walked away.
The three girls beside him exchanged glances and politely apologized to Kuzuki: “Teacher Kuzuki, we’ll see you next time.”
Kuzuki didn’t chase after them; he just said one thing.
“It’s about Magecraft.”
Matou Shinji stopped walking.
Magecraft?
Is it Magecraft… or is Kuzuki just talking out of his ass?
But in this situation, Matou Shinji wouldn’t believe Kuzuki was just spouting nonsense.
This guy definitely knows something!
“Magecraft? Teacher Kuzuki wants to perform Magecraft?” The three girls stared curiously at Kuzuki, ready to observe his performance.
Kuzuki shook his head and said, “I won’t perform Magecraft. What I’m talking about is something else… “
“Enough!”
Matou Shinji suddenly spoke, interrupting Kuzuki.
He looked angry and walked back to Kuzuki’s side, saying, “I understand.”
Then he turned around, looking normal again, and said to the three girls, “I have some things to talk about with Teacher Kuzuki. You should go home first?”
Huh?
Although the three girls were reluctant, they ended up leaving anyway.
Following Kuzuki to a secluded, uninhabited place, Matou Shinji finally snapped and growled, “Are you crazy? Magus must hide themselves and remain mysterious; that’s our rule! We absolutely cannot reveal ourselves!”
Kuzuki remained calm and said, “I’m not a Magus. I don’t have to follow Magus’ rules. And you—you aren’t either.”
Matou Shinji’s expression twisted in anger as he snarled, “You! You’re lying! I’m the head of the Matou family; one day, I’ll become a Magus myself. You’re crazy, you know nothing!”
“I came here for a reason, Matou. I’m looking for someone, and I think you can help me.”
Matou Shinji stood with his arms crossed and said, “Why should I help you? Just because of Teacher’s status isn’t enough to make me do anything.”
Kuzuki looked at him, seeming to pierce through his superficial facade and see his true self.
“Exchange is one of my principles; I will give equal compensation.”
Matou Shinji looked down his nose and sneered, “As a Magus, the few things that can move me are rare. Are you sure you can offer enough compensation?”
Kuzuki placed his hand on Matou Shinji’s shoulder; he struggled but didn’t break free.
“So what do you want? Strength, or to become a True Magus?” His hand tightened slightly as Matou Shinji began sweating. “Do you understand the concept of exchange? Overwhelming desires can consume oneself, Matou; you’d better recognize this.”
“Get off me! Don’t teach me this!” Matou Shinji struggled violently.
Kuzuki removed his hand, and Matou Shinji quickly stepped back, rubbing the shoulder that Kuzuki had pressed.
“Say it; who are you looking for?”
“A man, possibly a Magus, is creating Corpse Persons in this city. For some reason, he currently needs blood.”
Matou Shinji looked confused and said, “So that’s it? Name? Appearance?”
Kuzuki coldly said, “If I knew these things, would I still need you? The prestigious Magecraft family of the Matou clan wouldn’t be unable to do something as simple as this, would they?”
This hit a sore spot with Matou Shinji; he grumbled and turned away. “Hmph, don’t underestimate the Matou family. Even without you saying it, we could have done this.”
He walked away as Matou Shinji disappeared from view.
Why didn’t he ask about the compensation? Was it because he was too eager and afraid of disappointment; or did he not care about this deal?
With Matou Shinji’s distorted personality, I can’t tell. However, he will definitely come back to find Kuzuki.
[The three noble families in Fuyuki City: the Einzbern family is in Germany and hasn’t moved to Japan yet; the Tohsaka household has fallen on hard times and barely manages to stay afloat; only the Matou family remains, though their numbers are sparse. As long as Matou Zouken is still around, their strength won’t collapse. I hope Matou Shinji will be useful for me in finding that man soon.]
Unexpectedly just out to earn Assassination Points, Kuzuki wandered around Xindu a bit before, taking advantage of the night, returned to Ryudou Temple.
