Chapter 16 The Assassination Book’s Peril

The girl in question did not show any signs of plea.

Since she didn’t beg, Kuzuki wouldn’t act out of politeness; he remained emotionless as he continued forward.

However, upon seeing this scenario, some individuals misinterpreted it.

Therefore, when Kuzuki neither left nor moved away from them but instead approached the group, the strongest among these misunderstandings occurred.

They assumed that this was merely a night-time drunkard from an ordinary working class, someone who had been caught out because of his inebriated state and had come to offer assistance after seeing someone being bullied.

But such errors can lead to significant consequences.

    For instance:

The strongest individual growled maniacally while clenching his fists, approaching Kuzuki: “You drank too much; you lack the ability to discern. Let me give you a wake-up call.” As he looked around expectantly for an audience, he placed his hand on Kuzuki’s shoulder.

“Wait! You tore off one sleeve, and you were prepared to fight from the start? But I’m quite strong!” At this point, someone else called out: “Yamauchi, don’t do anything excessive.”

“How could I be so lenient?” Kuzuki gripped his shoulder with a sudden force, attempting to choke him.

The shadow of a fleeting escape passed by.

    “Crack… click…”

A strange breaking sound emanated from the air.

No one could make sense of what had happened; only when they realized it was too late did they notice that Yamauchi’s arm, which had been clamped onto Kuzuki’s shoulder, had twisted into something resembling a fried noodle from Chinese cuisine, with white and fibrous cartilage piercing through muscles and exposed in the air. Since everything happened so quickly, blood hadn’t yet oozed out, allowing them to see the pink muscle fibers and deep red veins beneath.

“Oh! Pain! My arm is broken!” With a deafening cry that broke through ear drums, Yamauchi wailed as his arm was torn painfully. He clung to his injured arm, lying on the ground in pain, his voice tearing apart like acid.

Seeing Yamauchi’s unconsciousness, the others who had been involved in this incident all became angry and rushed forward.

Fighting small vices with either the Poisonous Snake 99 Techniques or the Five Forms Fist was an affront to their skills.

Kuzuki merely used his hands a few times skillfully, sending everyone off without resistance.

The last individual, Keita, who had been acting as a tough guy, faced Kuzuki with fear on his face, his expression filled with disbelief.

That kind of ease and carelessness was not something he could fake; this man, appearing to be just an ordinary working-class individual, yet possessed immense strength beyond imagination.

After realizing this, Keita let out a loud cry of anger and fled in panic from the scene.

After dealing with these individuals, Kuzuki stood amidst the scattered and disheveled bodies before him for two seconds before addressing the girl.

Honestly speaking, he had some interest in her.

However, as a person who could discern others’ thoughts to some extent, there were certain things about this individual that he found intriguing yet unexplained.

The girl in question seemed similar to Kuzuki in one aspect; however, she was still lacking something within herself.

Additionally, there was a particular curiosity about her that he couldn’t shake off.

When it came to the head and shoulders of an individual, merely pulling on their hair could set off their scalp nerves, causing intense pain. However, Kuzuki noticed that even though this girl had been pulled roughly by someone else, she still maintained a neutral expression without any signs of discomfort.

    This was abnormal.

“You won’t feel pain?” Kuzuki asked her.

The girl hesitated and replied: “No… I…”

She did not feel pain, so she held herself in check.

Kuzuki could discern the truthfulness of her words but chose not to expose any falsehoods at this moment.

    “You won’t hurt yourself?”

The girl hesitated before nodding firmly.

Kuzuki understood that she was lying, yet there was no need to delve deeper into the matter.

“Can you act? I don’t know how far I can take you; maybe it’s better if someone else helps you.”

After a short pause, the girl slowly turned around and looked at Kuzuki.

“No… I don’t need help anymore. I can go home on my own. Thank you for your kindness.” Her slight apology made her appear somewhat awkward to an unknown person who had offered assistance, but she did not want anyone too close to her.

If one were to discover the true nature of this individual, would they fear and distance themselves from her?

Kuzuki respected everyone’s choice; since the girl showed no interest in help, he allowed it to proceed as is.

Looking at those lying on the ground beside him, Kuzuki turned to the girl: “It’s better to use others’ strength when you’re unable to handle things alone. That way, you won’t have to bear everything by yourself.”

After saying that, he turned and left.

As he disappeared into the shadows, a faint expression of unease crossed the girl’s face; just as he was about to vanish, she spoke up: “Thank you… I’m Asagami Fujino. What is your name?”

    * * *

Kuzuki stood still, head turned away, saying: “Kuzuki Souichirou, Kuzuki.”

    thump-thump.

As he moved with a stable yet firm step into the darkness, his presence seemed unchanged by what had come before him.

    ··········

Upon returning to his temporary quarters, Kuzuki performed his usual routine of entering the Assessment Book’s space.

After opening it, he noticed that his Assessment Points had increased unexpectedly from 100 to 110.

The increase was attributed solely to one reason: he had killed a human being.

“Is it because killing someone grants Assessment Points… and how are they awarded? Just for killing, or based on the victim’s nature?” From this perspective, the Assessment Book seemed quite sinister.

Possessing his own principles, Kuzuki wouldn’t bend to the book’s enticing offers without a fight.

However, within his boundaries, approaching the Assessment Book was natural and logical.

“It was somewhat unexpected; if I had known, I wouldn’t have allowed myself to gain those points.” Before this realization, Kuzuki hadn’t understood that prevention was possible.

Besides the increase in Assessment Points, the book also underwent other changes.

The third option [Ordeal] finally lit up with significance, indicating a choice had been made.

After battling a Dead Apostle, Kuzuki became aware of the gap between himself and true nonhumans, giving him a slight push to enhance his strength.

If that Dead Apostle had possessed tracking ability, it would have posed a significant challenge.

From observing the opponent’s physical manifestation alone, facing such an entity was nearly impossible; added to this, the individual belonged to another world and Kuzuki wasn’t familiar with Magic①.

With his fingers hovering over the third option, a sudden transformation occurred in the space around him.

The text displayed transformed into “[Poisonous Snake 99 Techniques’ Ordeal]” and “[Five Forms Fist’s Ordeal].”

Holding a trace of doubt, Kuzuki continued his finger hovering over “[Poisonous Snake 99 Techniques’ Ordeal].”

The space around him twisted and warped, everything receding into the background.

In the pure white void, two figures of Kuzuki stood opposite each other.

Within the Type-Moon universe, phenomena achieved through magical means can also be replicated using technology; such occurrences are termed “Magic.” Magic Masters refer to techniques that cannot be achieved through magic or technology as “magic,” while those requiring time and resources but achievable through them are not considered magic.
