Chapter 17 Equally matched
The situation is like a mirror, with two Kuzuki standing face to face.
“Is this… Copy Body? I must defeat myself?” Kuzuki frowns as he looks at his own reflection.
“From body to consciousness, it’s a full copy or just an empty shell?”
The other Kuzuki has the same cold expression, no emotion whatsoever. His build is slightly slimmer and his appearance is more pale and gloomy.
It looks like the Kuzuki from five years ago.
Yes, it’s the Kuzuki Souichirou on the other side, about 25 years old at this point. His physical strength and power are at peak.
“Who are you?”Kuzuki asks casually, trying to test whether his opponent has any wit.
“I don’t waste time in meaningless talk before battle.”The voice is the same as himself, tone also similar.
[I’m not sure how Assassination Book works, but my counterpart definitely possesses some wisdom since he can communicate. Maybe we can get some information about it.]
“Is there really a reason to fight? I want to know how much I know about Assassination Book.”
The other Kuzuki has already prepared for battle, ready to strike with his foot.
[There’s no need to kill me. My existence here is only to end your life.]
Is it created from nothing or through parallel worlds? Different methods have different meanings. There’s not much time for thinking, Kuzuki Souichirou doesn’t give his opponent any extra time.
Shadow steps forward, his body flickers like a ghost as he approaches.
“ounding sound!
The attack is a Destructive Bite from the other side. His weak arm attacks Kuzuki’s chest in an invisible manner.
Five Forms Fist·White Tiger Pursuit!
The air echoes with a deafening roar, Kuzuki suddenly lifts his shoulders and holds up both hands, forming claws that strike the opponent’s head.
“Pounding…”
A invisible force sweeps over Kuzuki, freezing him completely.
His body remains motionless as he throws a powerful attack. The opponent doesn’t even feel a hit.
[!…? How is it possible for my counterpart to have such ability? It seems like I can’t move, looks like I’m going to be killed.]
The other Kuzuki steps back without attacking.
“Don’t forget where we are. Next time, I won’t hold back.”
That strange static power begins to fade away. Kuzuki regains his ability to move after a while.
[Poisonous Snake 99 Techniques’ ordeal… meaning I can’t use other-Assassination Techniques? This is the restriction of this space, not my ability.]
For Kuzuki, it’s an unfavorable condition.
As his Five Forms Fist improves, in some aspects, he has become instinctual.
However, once he uses a technique other than Poisonous Snake 99 Techniques, he gets frozen and can’t move. That makes Kuzuki uncomfortable.
In intense combat where time is short, who has the energy to think about moves? They just let their body take care of it. Only when they have an absolute advantage in cat-and-mouse games like mouse and vole can they think about their moves.
[It seems I need to forget Five Forms Fist temporarily, relying only on Poisonous Snake 99 Techniques for the battle.]
Kuzuki imitates his opponent’s move. He looks at the other side with a serious expression.
[Obviously, my knowledge of Poisonous Snake 99 Techniques is superior to InSTRUCTOR’s in this round. So there’s only one chance for victory if my counterpart doesn’t overcome that defect.]
It goes without saying that Kuzuki wants to recreate the scene of defeating the Instructor before. This is the only advantage that Kuzuki has when he makes up for his weakness in the battle against another person.
A short break later, the atmosphere becomes tense again.
Both sides will engage in a fierce battle with no pause. They know each other too well.
Like they’re on a heart-to-heart chat, coordinating their moves simultaneously.
“Pounding!”
A massive wave of punches appears between them, the sound of cracking shells reverberating as they clash hard.
“Squeezing sound!”
Gung ho music hits, and they strike out at once. Each is pushed back by the rebound force.
Steam-like sweat droplets rise from Kuzuki’s arm as it’s exposed in the open air. His skin turns red like something burnt.
Kuzuki’s chest rises and falls with heavy breathing.
When he sees that his counterpart is barely sweating, far less than what he showed earlier, he figures out their strength for himself.
[My body quality is better than him. I also understand the moves to a much greater extent. If it weren’t for my deficiency in certain techniques and my lack of control over them now, I would have lost this fight long ago.]
The two individuals are well-informed about each other’s moves, with no surprises—whether flaws or strengths. There are no tricks involved; only those with superior hard strength can defeat them.
Thinking this through, Kuzuki almost believes he cannot overcome his opponent.
However, as the breathing and stepping phases pass, Kuzuki suddenly realizes a problem: [not quite right—his opponent’s victory is assured by his current strength. Why wait for calmness to strike? He must attack now! This indicates that his physical power has not yet been depleted.]
With determination, Kuzuki charges forward.
Indeed!
In the subsequent clash, Kuzuki notices a decline in the opponent’s strength.
[My advantage is my mastery of Five Forms Fist. Although I cannot use moves, my enhanced physical capabilities from this martial art still apply.]
Despite his lower body qualities compared to Kuzuki, Souichirou demonstrates remarkable resilience. Even with insights into Kuzuki’s attacks, he manages to avoid being controlled.
thump-thump
A powerful strike was intended, but exhaustion from exertion causes Kuzuki’s arm to stiffen. His punch loses momentum as his strength wanes due to physical strain.
To counter Souichirou’s evasion, Kuzuki strikes with a defensive move—a sweeping elbow followed by a backward leap.
After retreating, he lowers his arms, perspiring heavily and visibly tiring.
Souichirou avoids confrontation, but his body trembles with exertion. Despite the physical toll, he remains composed.
As exhaustion mounts, both individuals experience muscle fatigue due to their limited endurance as human beings.
Although they can ignore pain, sustained effort depletes their energy reserves. Thus, they agree to enter a recovery phase.
[①Breath Step Technique: In the Type-Moon world, breathing and stepping are high-level techniques that are “difficult to learn and imitate”. Taking in external airflow to connect the inner and outer self is a clear manifestation of magical power. Inhaling and exhaling are part of the process of taking in external airflow and releasing divine energy. The “correct breathing method” is a secret passed down through major sects, and not necessarily mastered by one person in a generation. Those who use incantations to cast magic are merely magicians. In situations where breathing, stepping, bone structure, and the generation of divine will within oneself create a magical circuit, this person surpasses magicians, becoming a pure magical conduit themselves.]
