Chapter 217 Kars and Hal Jordan!

    America, Washington.

Hal Jordan is a regular office worker who enjoys reading comics and playing games, but an incident from over a month ago completely altered the course of his life…

Due to sharing the same name, Hal is fond of a comic called “Green Lantern,” the independently published series that restarted in 1960.

He’s managed to collect nearly all 2 hundred issues.

Unlike the hero in the comics, Hal is just an ordinary person, already 31 and still without a girlfriend, as unremarkable as can be… until over a month ago.

At a bar not far from his place, Hal sat alone at the counter, drinking his wine.

As was his custom after work, he came here for a drink, and today was no different.

The bar owner, his face covered with a thick beard, poured a drink for Hal and said, “This one’s on the house, kid. You’ve been moping around for over a month now. It’s time to get over that breakup. There are plenty of fish in the sea…”

Hal drank the wine in one gulp with a bitter smile.

“Don’t tease me,Bernard. You know my situation, where would I find a girlfriend…”

The bar owner cast a glance at him, a defeated man in his thirties, scruffy beard, only a shade better than a drifter.

“If it’s not about women, then what’s the big deal? Remember, there’s no river in the world that can’t be crossed.”

Hal was a regular, and the two were fairly familiar with each other.

After a moment of hesitation, Hal couldn’t help but ask, “Bernard, do you believe in the supernatural?”

“What?” Bernard stopped wiping the glass, thinking he had misheard. “Did you encounter an evil spirit, or maybe the devil and those sorts of things?”

Hal pushed his empty glass forward, signaling for a refill.

Leaning in, he slightly lowered his voice: “The kind of… superheroes like Superman, Spider-Man in the comics, do you think they could exist in reality?”

Bernard instinctively wanted to laugh at Hal, but considering his funk for over a month, he managed to hold back and not mock him.

“Ahem… isn’t Superman that guy from another planet? If there are aliens, then maybe there really are superheroes.”

    Hal nodded thoughtfully.

Bernard refilled his drink and asked curiously, “So, have you seen those guys? It hasn’t been on the news. If you speak up, you might just make a big splash.”

    “…”

Hal pulled out a Falkland Island note from his pocket, slapped it on the counter, drained the remaining drink in one go, then gestured with his finger for Bernard to come closer.

The curiosity of the bar owner was piqued, and he leaned in to listen.

“Actually, I saw a man coming out of your house a while back, and I’ve been hesitant to tell you. But since you treated me to a drink today, I decided to speak the truth…”

HalHaha chuckled and patted Berna’s shoulder before turning to leave.

Berna gave him the middle finger as he saw him out.

Leaving the boisterous bar, Hal stepped out into the night air and took a deep breath, walking briskly towards his residence.

Although the bar owner noticed the change in Hal’s expression, he didn’t catch some other subtle details.

For instance, why did Hal, who didn’t even have a girlfriend, wear a ring on his hand?

As Hal walked along his usual route, he whistled a tune with a good mood, having made a certain decision during his conversation with the bar owner that put his mind at ease.

Of course, it wasn’t because the bar owner was good at comforting people, but rather Hal had been thinking for a long time and happened to make the decision at that moment.

    Whoosh, whoosh……

Hal suddenly heard the sound of large bird wings flapping, seemingly a hawk or eagle flying overhead, making a commotion.

He looked up at the sky, but couldn’t see any birds or even stars.

Hal didn’t think much of it and lowered his line of sight, only to discover a figure in front of him.

He was startled and took a step back involuntarily.

At this time of night, the street wasn’t usually crowded, but he might have just not noticed someone was there.

Although he was startled, it wasn’t a prank, and Hal couldn’t say anything.

He sidestepped, trying to go around the stranger in front of him.

However, the stranger moved, blocking his path.

Hal furrowed his brow: “Excuse me, sir, is there something I can help you with?”

Only then did he have a chance to get a good look at the stranger.

Red pupils, purple long hair carelessly draped over his shoulders, a physique like a Greek sculpture, full of strength and beauty, with an inexplicable charm!

Hal felt an inexplicable shiver, as if the person in front of him wasn’t human, but a powerful being like a dragon or a titan, radiating an aura of intimidation from its very essence!

The stranger’s gaze was detached, as if he wasn’t communicating with someone of the same kind, but rather with flowers, trees, or animals in a zoo.

This individual was none other than Kars, the Crimson King, exuding an aura reminiscent of the powerful beings from the world of Fate, like Gilgamesh or Angra Mainyu.

Having crossed the Pacific Ocean and stepped onto the North American continent from Australia, he killed every single person related to SPW Corporation he encountered along the way.

Now, he was about to complete the last step, destroying the headquarters of SPW Corporation!

Of course, it wasn’t for the sake of revenge, a boring reason.

Everything he did was simply for the fun of it, to lure Joseph out.

As if Fundamental hadn’t heard Hal’s question, Kars raised a finger and said: “Tell me the location of SPW Corporation’s headquarters.”

Hal frowned, somewhat displeased with the stranger’s tone and attitude, and after pointing in the direction without a good word, he muttered and turned away.

Although Hal had obtained the Ring, his mentality and personality remained much the same as before.

He’d avoid Trouble if he could.

    Whoosh…

It was that sound of birds flapping their wings again, accompanied by a gust of wind that blew against Hal’s back.

Hal turned around in astonishment, and discovered that his surroundings were empty.

“Shit, where did the person go?”

The eerie encounter caused a sense of unease in Hal, making him wonder if he had hallucinated.

A living person could just appear and disappear like that?

    It was exaggerated, wasn’t it?

    Not like a Spirit…

    Wait…

If even something like the Ring exists, then what aboutSpirits…

Hal shivered, glanced at the Ring on his hand, and a surge of courage filled him.

“What’s there to be afraid of? I have this, what’s there to fear from a ghost?”

He stomped his foot, shaking off the chill, and prepared to head home.

But after taking 2 steps, he stopped.

“SPW Corporation… damn it, wouldn’t something go wrong?”

Hal felt a bit conflicted inside.

The stranger he had encountered was obviously suspicious.

If he hadn’t met him, no matter what happened to SPW Corporation, it wouldn’t concern him.

But now, after pointing the way for the stranger, to pretend nothing happened felt wrong.

“I just decided to be an Ordinary Person, pretend nothing happened, as if I hadn’t found this Ring, and live a peaceful life…”

    But then this happened.

    Who could handle it?

“Alright, I’ll go take a look, for peace of mind.” Hal felt the warmth of the Ring on his finger

Thus, he began making his way towards the SPW Corporation, but had not gone far when he witnessed a distant skyscraper collapse with a thunderous roar, its upper half shearing off and slowly crashing to the ground.

The explosion’s crimson flames soared skyward, dyeing half the heavens red, while black smoke and loud noises heralded chaos spreading at lightning speed.
