    Chapter 38 Asagami Fujino

    Tail chase failed.

    Kuzuki emerged from darkness.

Asagami Fujino asked, “Kuzuki-san, what feelings does killing have?”

    ……

    Kuzuki did not respond.

Such matters do not have answers.

Looking at the girl in front of him, Kuzuki said, “This place is not meant to be stayed long; although secluded, it cannot guarantee that no one will pass by. Please leave here immediately.”

Kuzuki took her back to his temporary residence.

Due to bloodstains on her clothing, Asagami Fujino used the bathroom for cleaning.

The running water sounds, the removal of clothes sounds, and the friction against skin sounds.

Kuzuki was sitting in his nearby living room, listening with keen ears even as he could clearly hear every action inside the bathroom.

However, he had no romantic ideas; his thoughts were calm and unbothered.

Blood-stained clothing cannot be worn, and Kuzuki did not have any female garments to wear. Therefore, Asagami Fujino only wore a piece of Kuzuki’s upper garment, exposing her fine, snow-white legs without shoes as she emerged from the bathroom.

“Kuzuki-san, why are you following me?” Asagami Fujino sat down in front of him without warning, her eyes fixed on his with a determined gaze.

Kuzuki replied, “At first, I thought it would be interesting to observe how someone similar might progress and perhaps mimic their path forward. However, as time went by, I realized that I had moved further away from my original path out of curiosity about another person’s different choices. It seems like our fates are entirely divergent…”

Asagami Fujino clenched her chest tightly, a strange hue appearing in her eyes.

She likened herself to someone drowning, holding onto a life-saving straw, and said, “Kuzuki-san, was what you first mentioned really sincere?”

Kuzuki nodded, repeating the words he had spoken to Asagami Fujino on their first meeting: “People have an advantage in that they can use tools; if one cannot solve a problem alone, seeking help from others is better than enduring it alone.”

Asagami Fujino lowered her head and said, “Kuzuki-san, can you assist me? I want to experience the real sensation of life.”

    Indeed.

Lacking the ability to feel pain, she had integrated ordinary sense into a facade rather than living within it. She maintained an outward appearance of having sensory awareness but kept her inner emotions hidden from others. Over time, this distortion led her to lose the real sensation of life.

If Kuzuki’s nature was artificially shaped by human intervention after birth, then Asagami Fujino is an anomaly born from a divine source.

Kuzuki nods and says: “I’ll try my best, but before that, I want to ask some questions.”

After hearing Kuzuki’s affirmative response, Asagami Fujino relaxes a bit.

“As long as I know it, I will answer.”

“Then the first question: When did you realize that you no longer feel pain?”

Asagami Fujino curls up on the Sofa and wraps his arms around his chest, recalling: “As a child, playing House with my mother. There was a small kitchen tool in the playthings, which was actually a knife. My mother held me in her arms and asked me one day: ‘Is it very painful, Fujino?’ I didn’t understand that at first. After wrapping the wound, she said to me: ‘Once you’re healed, you won’t feel pain anymore.’ I still don’t understand that either. From memory, I have never felt anything called pain.”

Hearing this, her voice became animated as she looked at Kuzuki. “I want to know what pain is… and I want to feel it…”

As Kuzuki suddenly shifts his position, he accidentally looks at something inappropriate.

“During the investigation of the Fujino family, we were told about some rumors that you were cursed and hated by others because of your early experiences. Do you know why?”

Asagami Fujino shakes her head in confusion.

[Could it be congenital analgesia? But congenital analgesia usually leads to certain defects in adults because they can’t feel pain as children. However, Asagami Fujino doesn’t seem to have any signs of this injury.]

Kuzuki, though immersed in a mysterious world and having encountered some inexplicable phenomena, still thinks scientifically when considering explanations.

So for Asagami Fujino’s congenital analgesia, he didn’t consider directions like “magecraft” or “curse”.

“Besides not feeling pain, is there anything else different from ordinary people…”

Fujino changes her posture and sits on the Sofa. “Medicine… can it be counted as something?”

Kuzuki frowns and learns from her explanation that she was prescribed medication by her adoptive father starting at six years old, without any breaks for over ten years.

    [That’s suspicious. The ‘medication’…]

Congenital analgesia, medicine, curse child, adoptive father, six years old…

These words keep rolling in my mind and combine until I reach a conclusion.

It seems her condition is caused by human intervention. The ‘medication’ isn’t medicine.

If the ‘medication’ had treated her congenital analgesia, why hasn’t it stopped yet? Even if it doesn’t stop now, why not change it?

Clearly, this ‘medication’ isn’t designed to treat congenital analgesia. Instead, it’s the cause of it.

This makes sense because inhibiting pain with medication also erases her ‘curse child’ nickname.

    So everything becomes clear now.

In her sixth year, before Asagami Fujino, due to a special ability, she was feared and loathed by everyone around her. To hide this ability, she used “药” (medicine) to suppress it, but one side effect of “药” was Congenital Analgesia.

“I have an idea,” Kuzuki said casually, “From now on, you won’t need to take ‘medicine’ anymore. If my assessment is correct, stopping the drug for a while should help you regain your sensitivity. That’s why it caused Congenital Analgesia.”

Asagami Fujino kept her head low and didn’t say anything.

Kuzuki waited a moment before asking an irrelevant question: “How did you know I was following you? If my assessment is wrong…”

Asagami Fujino looked up and said, “Earlier, someone told me that they could cure my Body, giving me temporary sensitivity. At that time, after regaining my sense of touch, I saw you.”

Kuzuki was sure he had never seen Asagami directly before…

“Is it because your ability returned with the sensation? Can someone observe you in a way that involves visual abilities? And did that man, who I didn’t know about, come into contact with Asagami Fujino without me knowing?”

“Who told you his name?” Kuzuki asked.

“Araya Souren… is the person’s name.” Asagami Fujino replied.
