Chapter 57 Another Peaceful Day
In the early morning, the forest awakens from its slumber, with birds calling out in every direction.
A shadowy figure appears on the misty stone path.
Kuzuki looks a year older and more mature.
“Temperature, air, gravity are all suitable for humans. Most plants are familiar too. It should be Earth, not Otherworld…” Kuzuki walks forward along the stone path.
[Dark Flower (Secret Mission)]
Goal: Old One
A creature with extremely powerful abilities. It has been hidden in darkness since ancient times, often attaching itself to objects or living beings, waiting for the perfect opportunity to consume human minds and bodies. Its body only has one weak spot; if it suffers massive blood loss, it will die. The weak spot is called “Liver,” originally resembling a meat block. To connect with “Otherworld,” it relies on something in the mortal world. If “Liver” is destroyed and suffers massive blood loss, its connection to the mortal world will be severed, leading to its death returning to “Otherworld.” If killed in “Otherworld,” both its soul and body will dissipate. Ancient humans signed a “Exemption from Red Food” agreement with Old Ones to avoid extinction, allowing them to eat specific humans.
Requires: Defeating an Old One
Reward: Unlimited.
Time limit: Three months.
Given the “Otherworld” setting, it’s unclear if the Assassination Book will directly send Kuzuki to Otherworld. It seems more challenging now; the Assassination Book hasn’t sent Kuzuki straight to Otherworld yet. He needs to find his own way.
An hour later, Kuzuki is blocked by a strange building.
A concrete wall about four meters high with a half-meter-high iron fence on top.
The wall extends far to both sides; the end is out of sight.
After confirming there’s no life or surveillance equipment nearby, Kuzuki approaches the wall.
He leans against the wall and looks sideways. The wall curves inward, meaning he’s inside the structure, not outside.
A group of birds fly overhead; Kuzuki suddenly raises his hand and waves.
A bird falls straight down like a kite.
Squeal!
Sparks flash, and the small bird on the iron fence instantly turns black with its fur burning.
There’s still high-voltage electricity here. What the hell is going on? Is this some kind of military research facility?
Staying here might get me into trouble.
Speaking of it, Kuzuki noticed a lot of surveillance cameras along the road he walked earlier. He was curious but didn’t want to risk getting caught on camera. Now that he thinks about it, avoiding them was probably a good idea.
“Let’s go outside and see what’s going on.” Kuzuki stood firm, leaping up nearly three meters high. His toes barely touched the wall for support before he flipped gracefully through the air and landed outside the wall.
“Hmm, once I get out of the wall, that strange feeling goes away. So, there really is something abnormal inside the wall.” Kuzuki started walking toward a higher elevation.
Mountain peak.
Kuzuki looked down at the surroundings from his elevated position.
This area is surrounded by mountains, close to the coast. On the coastal side, there’s a small town nestled among many buildings.
A faint white line surrounds the town.
The Assassination Book wouldn’t send him here for no reason.
From the first and second execution of [Dark Flower (Secret Mission)], Kuzuki noticed that targets usually aren’t too far away from him.
Surrounded by mountains, Kuzuki used his sharp eyes to look into the distance. He didn’t see any other towns within his line of sight, only this small town in the visible range.
Does that mean the target is inside this small town?
[Old One can’t be killed on Earth, and the Mission explicitly mentions it. So, this town might not have anything to do with Old One. Maybe there’s a way to reach Otherworld, which is why the Assassination Book sent him here.]
After thinking about it for a while, Kuzuki decided to go back the way he came.
He easily jumped over the wall and entered the town.
The atmosphere feels strange.
It’s too quiet.
The number of people here doesn’t seem right.
As Kuzuki walked through the town, he didn’t see any armed personnel. The town looked peaceful and serene.
However, various discomforts kept reminding him that this wasn’t a normal town.
Kuzuki walked along the wide streets, constantly observing the surroundings.
The population was too sparse; it took several minutes to encounter a couple.
Kuzuki watched the couple leave without expression, lifted his glasses slightly, and continued walking.
The town wasn’t very big.
Kuzuki spent two hours touring the entire town.
Inside the town, there were no hidden monitoring devices; only surveillance cameras were installed at street intersections.
There were no military personnel or researchers around; the surrounding buildings indicated that this was within Japanese territory.
The population seemed unusually sparse.
Only a few hundred people lived there, with 80% of the buildings being uninhabited.
It’s unlikely that this is due to young people working out of town, leaving only elderly residents behind. The ratio seems too exaggerated for that explanation.
“You know, I haven’t seen any old people or children here; everyone is an adult,” Kuzuki randomly entered a residential building.
Inside, it looked freshly renovated, lacking the necessary furniture for daily life—only empty rooms remained.
“The couple didn’t act like a couple; the friends didn’t act like friends. They were filled with coldness and distance, as well as hostility, acting out their roles so badly that it was obvious.”
Kuzuki stood by the window overlooking the street.
A man walked past after a long time.
Perfect, that’s you.
Ishikigaku Shuuichi dragged a heavy step along the street, his face dark with anger.
“Honestly, it would have been better to stay in jail. The guy there was smart and spoke well; it felt like being at home. But now I’m here, it’s even more unbearable than sitting in a cell!” He spit out a mouthful of tobacco and returned to his “home.”
“If it weren’t for the fact that this could erase my criminal records, I wouldn’t want to be an actor or put on such a poor performance!” He didn’t even take off his shoes, walking directly from the entrance into the living room and opening the fridge. It was empty; there wasn’t anything inside.
Slam!
Slamming hard against the fridge door, Shuuichi Ishikigaku collapses face-first onto the floor. “Damn it, even Miss Mitsukata isn’t here. How long am I going to have to wait?”
His vision suddenly dims as a shadow blocks out the light.
Shuuichi Ishikigaku squints his eyes and asks, “Who is it? Mitsukata or Kawahara?”
After adjusting to the light and seeing who it is, he rolls up from the floor with a bone-crunching groan. “Hey! Who are you? What are you doing here? We shouldn’t know each other, right? I remember reading in the rulebook that actors without relationships aren’t allowed to interact. Don’t want to get me in trouble, so get lost!”
Oh, interesting.
