    Chapter 58 The Truman Show

After showing off a bit of his power, Ishikigaku Shuuichi remained silent.

“Tell me everything you know about this town.” Kuzuki sat on the floor, staring at Ishikigaku Shuuichi with panda eyes as blood dripped steadily from his nose.

He grabbed his nose and growled, “I don’t really know much. I just heard it in jail that if I agreed to do one live TV show, they’d erase my criminal record and sign a contract bringing me here. I really don’t know anything, brother, please spare me.”

    “Continue.” Kuzuki remained unfazed.

Ishikigaku Shuuichi wiped his nose and said, “That’s it. They gave me a handbook to follow, but nothing else.”

He ran to the nearby cabinet, pulled out a small booklet, and handed it to Kuzuki, saying, “Here’s the handbook, brother. If you’re fine with that, I’ll go.” With that, he started running out.

    Slap!

A knife used for cutting fruit scraped against Ishikigaku Shuuichi’s neck and stuck in the wall, a blade nearly 10 centimeters long embedded deep into the wall.

Ishikigaku Shuuichi’s heart skipped a couple of beats before he shakily sat back down.

Kuzuki flipped through the handbook. The contents were simple enough.

Besides the things Ishikigaku Shuuichi needed to do, there were a few restrictions that caught Kuzuki’s attention.

First, he was not allowed near the Floating Shrine.

Second, he wasn’t allowed near Sanbara Academy.

Third, he couldn’t leave the town.

Fourth, he wasn’t allowed to contact Saya Kisaragi.

Fifth, he couldn’t go out at night.

Sixth, if he violated any of these restrictions, he would be responsible for the consequences.

Kuzuki closed the handbook and revealed the title on the cover…Actor’s Handbook.

“So that means everyone in this town is an actor?”

Ishikigaku Shuuichi swallowed a mouthful of spit and said cautiously, “If they’re all actors, who are they acting for?”

Kuzuki looked at him in surprise.

That guy had some good points. If everyone is an actor, it would be for movies, but this situation clearly isn’t that.

[Also, The Truman Show. Is this ‘Truman Show’ the same as ‘Target Saya Kisaragi’?]

Ishikigaku Shuuichi suddenly looks thoughtful and says, “Oh, right! I remember now. When assigning actors, they mentioned that the main cast knew more about it. Maybe you should ask them!”

    Main cast?

They know a lot, but they might also be monitored heavily. If you contact them, it might attract the attention of the backstage planners.

    “Do you know ‘Old One’?”

Ishikigaku Shuuichi looks puzzled, clearly not familiar with this term.

Kuzuki stands up and walks to the wall, pulling out a small knife.

In Ishikigaku Shuuichi’s wide-open eyes, he crushes the knife into mud.

“Don’t tell anyone about me. Do you understand?”

Ishikigaku Shuuichi nods wildly after being warned.

After warning Ishikigaku Shuuichi, Kuzuki goes to the outside street.

The noon sun shines brightly, heating up the air, and the sound of cicadas is deafening.

Private Sanbara Academy is right in the center of the small town, while the Floating Island Shrine is just outside it on the eastern side near the coast.

When Kuzuki investigated the town earlier, he had passed by two places, but because the entire town seemed unusual, he didn’t get closer to either.

It’s noon now, so Private Sanbara Academy should still be in session.

Let’s go check the school first.

Kuzuki walks silently down an empty street, with many trees on both sides. The cicadas are extremely loud.

Every time Kuzuki passes by, the cicadas stop chirping, and then resume immediately after he moves on. He can’t find peace.

    Private Sanbara Academy.

Standing under a tree in the forest near the playground, Kuzuki looks at the Teaching Building.

Unsurprisingly, the school is eerily quiet. The entire Teaching Building has only one class in session; all other classrooms are empty.

[Why forbid actors from contacting this place? Is the classroom currently in session ‘Truman Show’? Ishikigaku Shuuichi lived here for a while but didn’t know about Old One. Could it be that Old One hasn’t appeared in this small town at all?]

There’s no internet cafe here, and there are no extra entertainment facilities. Even the phone is gone. It completely eliminates the possibility of communication with the outside world.

But obviously, normal social order exists outside, otherwise Shuuichi wouldn’t participate in a reality TV show to eliminate his criminal records.

    ········

“What are you looking at, Saya Kisaragi?” A short-haired girl with bangs leans over Saya Kisaragi’s desk curiously.

The girl called Saya Kisaragi has long black hair tied in a ponytail and wears circular glasses. She looks away shyly and says, “There seems to be someone watching this side from the tree outside the school.”

“Oh~ Where? Let me see.” The short-haired girl sticks her head out the window and scans around. She turns back and says, “No one’s there… Where are you?”

Saya Kisaragi looks confused and says, “I’m not sure. I saw someone standing under the tree a moment ago, but when I looked closely, they disappeared.”

“That’s too bad for you to be seeing things, right? Or is it that you’re just not paying attention, Ningen?” A twin with the same short-haired girl as Short-haired Girl approaches. The twin, Ningen, nods and smiles affectionately, wrapping her arms around Saya Kisaragi. “Let’s go eat lunch together, Saya Kisaragi.”

The twins start messing around with each other while Saya Kisaragi looks out the window and shakes her head, not thinking about it anymore.

    On the other side.

Kuzuki walks down the road leading to the Shrine.

“The school has surveillance. If I wanted to go back to the school unnoticed during the day, that wouldn’t make sense now. Let’s check out the Shrine.”

After leaving the small town and passing a Coffee Shop and a long stretch of mountain road, Kuzuki arrives at the top of a hill where the Shrine is located.

Standing in front of the Torii (a Japanese architectural feature that separates the sacred from the profane), Kuzuki quietly retreats.

The area in front of the school, like the one at the school, is within the surveillance range. Getting too close would reveal her presence.

She’ll have to wait until later to act.

After reaching the Coffee Shop at the base of the mountain, Kuzuki pushes open the door and enters.

The owner of the Coffee Shop is a young man with a good-looking face. Upon seeing Kuzuki, he looks slightly surprised but quickly reacts, smiling warmly and asking, “What would you like to drink?”

“A glass of water.” In other places, she might order a glass of water just to provoke someone, but here, in this small town, everything is normal.

After bringing her a glass of water, the owner slightly opens his narrowed eyes and carefully examines Kuzuki.

Actors don’t necessarily know each other, so Kuzuki isn’t overly cautious. She wouldn’t recognize just any actor, would she?

[Here, at the Shrine’s mandatory checkpoint, should she knock out this guy and observe the Shrine in detail?]

After thinking for a while, Kuzuki decided to abandon his plan. With the mastermind hiding somewhere unknown, Kuzuki wanted to investigate this situation without drawing attention, which would take some time.

The owner of the Coffee Shop must be familiar with Shrine’s actors. If the owner suddenly changed, Shrine’s actors would definitely suspect it. This isn’t the outside world; everything here is a performance. It’s impossible to suddenly replace an actor by then without explanation.

There are uninhabited rooms nearby. Let’s stay there for now.

After refilling water, Kuzuki left the Coffee Shop and prepared to continue investigating this small town.

Just as he walked out of the Coffee Shop, the genial and kind-faced owner suddenly changed his expression, becoming emotionless. He calmly pulled out a phone from his pocket and was about to make a call when Kuzuki’s voice suddenly came from behind him.

“Shop Owner, why are you making a call?”
