Chapter 62 A Real Man Never Looks Back at an Explosion
“Ugh…”
The propeller is gradually accelerating, and the intense wind begins to lift the body.
In the distance, a figure is rapidly approaching this side.
But it’s too late; they’re still far away.
Nanahara Fumito stands at the door of the cockpit, smiling as Kuzuki charges toward him. “It’s a pity, Mr. Monster,” he says with one hand holding the door and the other aiming a gun at Kuzuki’s figure, continuously firing.
“Zing!”
Kuzuki leaps up, stepping on the wall of School to lend himself some support.
However, the plane has already risen to nearly 100 meters in the air. Even with a single fist, it’s impossible to attack from here.
Just then, Nanahara Fumito notices Kuzuki making a strange move as he reaches the peak of his flight. He suddenly swings out a punch and hurls it toward this side.
Nanahara Fumito is startled and immediately retreats into the cockpit.
Could that monster really have such long-range attack capabilities?
But after waiting a moment, nothing happens. Nanahara Fumito’s face turns red with anger.
“Damn you, monster! You dare make false moves to deceive me!”
He suddenly feels unsteady on his feet and grabs the seat to shout, “What’s going on? Keep the plane steady!”
No one responds. When he looks at the cockpit of the driver, Pupil immediately shrinks.
The pilot explodes like a bomb inside his body, dyeing the entire cockpit blood-red. A large hole is torn out of the front window, and intense winds rush in!
Kuzuki slices through the air and lands on the ground, digging a deep trench.
The helicopter high above looks like a kite with a broken string as it crashes toward the ground.
Kuzuki doesn’t look back; he turns around and walks away from the falling plane.
“Thud!”
The ground shakes, and a massive explosion erupts, sending up a huge flame!
The small town was in ruins, with destruction everywhere. Occasionally, people who had managed to escape could be seen fleeing from the distance.
Kuzuki kept walking down the street and would encounter Kisaragi Saya coming toward him every time. She held a sword and looked somewhat dazed.
“Fumito···sir, where are we?”
“The place of his fall.”
Kisaragi Saya fell silent for a moment before continuing to move in the direction of the fall.
The location of the fall.
A hideous scar was torn into the ground. Amidst the debris, the remnants of an airplane were still burning, and several soldiers’ bodies lay scattered around, though none of them were Nanahara Fumito.
He was still alive.
Blood-soaked Nanahara Fumito walked forward with his left arm hanging limply by his side, swaying slightly with the wind. His movements were uneven, taking one step at a time.
He hadn’t taken more than a few steps before someone blocked his path.
It was Kisaragi Saya. Her memories were still recovering, but she had recalled some fragments of the past.
“Is that really what he said?”
He naturally meant Kuzuki. Nanahara Fumito smiled and said, “No, everything you’ve experienced is an illusion. You’re nothing more than a test subject.”
“Why did he do that?”
“Because of the promise.”Nanahara Fumito slowly approached Kisaragi Saya and said, “Give rewards to the winner and punish the loser. I lost, Kisaragi Saya. Kill me.”
Kisaragi SayaPain held her head and said, “I ··· can’t do that. We already made a promise to protect everyone.”
Nanahara Fumito grabbed Kisaragi Saya as she struggled with Pain and said, “Kill me, and you’ll be free from the promise, Kisaragi Saya. I love you.”
He stabbed his own chest while still holding Kisaragi Saya’s hand that clutched the sword. At the same time, he kissed her lips.
Thud!
In a sudden burst of sound, Nanahara Fumito’s body was thrown high into the air like rotten meat and fell heavily to the ground. He rolled twice before coming to rest. His chest had been deeply caved in, with bones protruding through his skin. Blood oozed out of his mouth, and his legs twitched slightly before he went limp and died.
Kisaragi Saya froze completely. She stared blankly at Nanahara Fumito as he died, her true memories rapidly returning to her.
Those moments spent with Nanahara Fumito and the feelings I had for him are all in the past.
Not far away, Kuzuki killed Nanahara Fumito with a single punch and was about to leave when he noticed a strange creature. It looked like a mix between a cat and a dog, with three vertical scars on its head, walking steadily down the wall toward Kisaragi Saya.
This is the first time Kuzuki has seen another living being in this small town, aside from Old Ones.
The strange creature suddenly spoke to Kisaragi Saya with a familiar tone: “How are you? Have you remembered your wish yet?”
“My wish…?”
“Yes, although things didn’t go smoothly, your wish has still been granted,” it said.
[I hope I can maintain myself.]
Many years ago, before she agreed to Nanahara Fumito’s experiment, Kisaragi Saya had once made a wish to stay the same. Now that her memories have returned, she believes the wish has been fulfilled.
“Then, where are you going?” Kisaragi Saya asked without responding.
There was no answer to this question. From the beginning, she had always been alone, wandering, killing Old Ones, and that was all. She had no purpose or direction.
The strange creature was about to turn and leave when a hand suddenly grabbed it.
“Wish? Can you grant others’ wishes?” Kuzuki asked while holding it up.
Despite being held by Kuzuki, the creature seemed calm as it said: “Yes, as long as there’s an equal cost, any wish can be granted.”
“Good. I need to open the Door to the Otherworld. Can you do that?” Kuzuki asked.
The strange creature licked its paw and said: “I can do that, but there’s a cost, and you’re human, right? The Door to the Otherworld isn’t such a nice place. I’ve heard humans get lost there and end up stuck in The Other World forever. Are you sure about this?”
Kuzuki let go of it and said: “Then grant me my wish and open the Door to the Otherworld.”
“OK, Contract is complete. Now, I need a mirror,” the creature said.
Finding a nearby mirror from a house, the strange creature bit it and walked over to an Old One’s corpse. Using its claw to soak up some of the blood, it drew an odd symbol on the mirror.
“If you break this mirror, you can enter The Other World,” it said as it handed Kuzuki the mirror. After quickly leaving with its tail, it was gone.
Kisaragi Saya looked at the mirror in Kuzuki’s hand and suddenly said: “I’ll go with you. I… don’t belong here.”
Many years ago, as a baby, she had been brought to this world from The Other World by humans who raised her. She could only eat Old Ones and couldn’t harm humans, thanks to a promise she made with someone back then. Later, Nanahara Fumito used this to erase her memories and turned the promise into a vow to protect humans from Old Ones.
Kisaragi Saya had many memories of that time. She had been a baby when it all started, and she still remembered how she was taken in by humans who didn’t know what she truly was.
“You can do whatever you want.”Kuzuki doesn’t mind whether it’s one or many.
The mirror shattered on the ground, and a cloud of white smoke rose up, engulfing Kuzuki and Kisaragi Saya.
A moment later, the smoke dissipated, leaving nothing behind.
ps: Kisaragi Saya shouldn’t really be considered an Old One…right?
