Chapter 63 Barren Earth
The Other World.
A dark and foreboding sky, shrouded in thick clouds.
On a vast open plain, surrounded by strange pillar-like stone structures standing on a gravel-covered floor, Kuzuki walked slowly across the plain.
When Kisaragi Saya was separated from him upon arrival to this world, she now wandered alone in these lands.
Standing beneath a stone pillar, Kuzuki gazed far into the distance.
Until the horizon blocked his view, the sky and land seemed connected as one continuous line, with no signs of life visible.
With his current abilities, he couldn’t reach the fasting state required for the Ascetic Realm. Even if he reduced all consumption to its absolute limit, he could only survive for seven days without food or water at most. If he hadn’t found water and food within that time, he would likely starve to death.
In this barren, lifeless world, Kuzuki moved forward in a straight line, walking neither fast nor slow, aiming to conserve his energy as much as possible.
Without any reference points and no sun in the sky, Kuzuki could only occasionally return to check his footsteps and correct his path to avoid wandering aimlessly.
The journey was a monotonous repetition of the same scenery.
Since arriving in The Other World, Kuzuki had been silently counting the hours. After twelve hours, he looked up toward the sky once more.
The scene remained unchanged—a dark and foreboding sky with thick clouds hanging overhead.
“The gravity is the same as Earth’s, but there’s no distinction between day and night. This is a unique phenomenon of The Other World, and I’m still at an extreme location,” Kuzuki thought aloud as he sat quietly beneath a stone pillar, resting while pondering the peculiarities of The Other World.
“Nanahara Fumito once mentioned that Old Ones were nearing extinction, which is why we can hardly see any living creatures here,” Kuzuki mused as he continued his journey.
After a short recovery, Kuzuki pressed on with his journey.
Just a short distance ahead, he suddenly looked up toward the sky once more.
He felt as though he was being watched by an unseen force…
A small black dot moved in the sky under the thick cloud cover.
As time passed, the small black dot grew larger and eventually transformed into a massive Pterosaur Monster, folding its wings and diving sharply from above!
“Clack!”
In an instant, it covered several hundred meters. Just a few dozen meters away from Kuzuki, the monster unfolded its massive wings, revealing steel-like claws as long as his own arm, and lunged at him using the momentum of its dive.
“Clack!”
Two massive claws drove into the ground, tearing out a deep crevice.
It missed, and its thick hind legs kicked hard at the ground, causing it to sink while also flapping its wings to create a powerful gust of wind that blew away anything nearby.
Just as it was about to take off, Kuzuki dodged an attack from the monster, transforming into a comet-like projectile that shattered the wind pressure created by its wings. In an instant, it passed over its uppermost wing.
A “thud” echoed through the air, and the Pterosaur Monster collapsed onto the ground like being hit by a massive water pressure machine.
As a flying creature, its body was large but lightweight. Its bones were hollow in structure, making it far less effective at defending itself than land or water-dwelling creatures. Kuzuki punched one of its wing roots from behind, sending immense power through its body. Even though its heart wasn’t completely shattered, the bones in its wing root were broken beyond repair, leaving it unable to flap its wings.
The monster’s head and beak resembled a human’s but stretched out and folded back along the midline, making its eyes appear on either side. It tried to crawl out of the massive crater it had created by kicking its legs, but its broken wings made it unable to maintain balance or even climb out.
Kuzuki looked up at the sky and saw no other Pterosaur Monsters nearby. He concluded that this monster must have been traveling alone.
This Old One was indeed fierce, with its wings broken but still wagging its long neck toward Kuzuki. Its sharp beak was aimed directly at him, as if trying to bite him.
Kuzuki’s shadow flickered beside the monster’s neck, and he struck it on the side of its head with a Seven Wounds Fist, taking its life in an instant.
As this Old One died, a strange white mist-like substance rose from its body. It wasn’t smoke but more like flames.
No material dispersed; only the light changed.
In [Dark Flower (Secret Mission)], it was mentioned that killing an Old One in The Other World causes its spirit to dissipate, which explains the strange scene just witnessed.
Kuzuki took some extra food from the monster’s body and continued moving forward.
For a long time afterward, he didn’t encounter any Old Ones again.
Three days later, the ground at the intersection of the sky and horizon had changed color.
It shifted from dark to a grayish yellow.
A few hours later, Kuzuki stood atop a tall stone pillar, looking toward the distance.
The vast desert ahead was dry and hot, with a breeze carrying fine sand that hit his face.
The area of The Other World was undoubtedly massive, but Kuzuki had only three months to complete the mission. Now, he had two months and twenty-five days left. Just finding an Old One would be difficult enough; eradicating them was impossible.
[Dark Flower (Secret Mission)] didn’t detail any punishment system, so perhaps there were no consequences for failing a mission.
This wasn’t one of the “Gods won’t release a mission that’s guaranteed to kill you; there must be a way to complete it,” as the difficulty of [Dark Flower (Secret Mission)] was unknown.
Entering the desert would accelerate both his physical and water loss, especially if he didn’t have a reliable food source. He could only survive for four days without eating or drinking.
Kuzuki gazed at the endless Sea of Sand for a moment before leaping down from the stone pillar and resolutely marching forward.
He wasn’t so pessimistic as to believe the Mission was impossible, nor so optimistic as to think things would inevitably turn around. He simply didn’t want to give up halfway for one simple reason: he chose to keep going.
The instant Kuzuki stepped into the Sea of Sand, the environment’s temperature dropped sharply.
With the dry wind blowing in his face, Kuzuki trudged forward across the sand dunes.
There are also creatures in the Sea of Sand.
It took Kuzuki a full month to walk out of the Sea of Sand. During that time, he encountered several Old One monsters living in the Sea of Sand: a colossal Scorpion Monster with a human upper body; a Raccoon Cat Monster with an unusual texture on its surface; a blob-like Amorphous Sand Pile Monster that almost swallowed Kuzuki whole; and another Flying Old One high above, unlike the winged dragon, it resembled a floating airship, relying on internal gas for buoyancy to fly.
Three days ago, Kuzuki saw a faint arc forming on the horizon. After three days of travel, he arrived at the edge of the Mountain Range.
The mountains ahead were taller than any peak on Earth, and even just the volume protruding below the clouds suggested that the height of the upcoming Mountain Range was unimaginable.
