Chapter 73 Fujou Building
Fujou Building, built in the early 70s during a period of rapid development as a landmark building in Mifune City, is now an outdated structure that was recently demolished after years of planning.
At first, it attracted tourists mainly because of its height and observation deck. However, due to its deteriorating condition, the demolition process began several years ago, with residents relocated until recently.
Late at night.
Ryougi Shiki arrives at Fujou Building.
Seventh Girl.
A corpse lies in front of the building, mutilated and bloodied, resembling a blooming rose with its spread pattern on the ground.
Ryougi Shiki looks at the body on the ground and hears laughter echoing from the building ahead.
She had seen eight ghostly girls floating above the roof when she passed by before, leading her to believe that eight girls would die here.
As Aozaki Touko mentioned, this place exists in a time distortion, where the order of events is reversed. The records of those who died do not align with their memories, leaving remnants of their past lives.
These are likely experiments by someone aiming to reach the Root, one of many attempts conducted here.
From below, Fujou Building has an indescribable weight and slowness in its atmosphere, as if the air moves more slowly inside than outside.
Crossing the police seal, Ryougi Shiki enters the building.
The entrance is filled with dust and disrepair.
A dark corridor stretches endlessly, devoid of any signs of life.
“Hah-hah…”
Laughter echoes from the depths of the hallway, where a strange doll lies on the floor, seemingly smiling.
Ryougi Shiki ignores these signs and inspects each floor one by one.
The laughter seems intentionally directed at her, lingering in the air around her.
“Fly…”
A slender girl with long black hair that reached her feet and a gaunt build stood beside her, muttering something with an odd Mana vibe.
However, Ryougi Shiki wasn’t fazed. She quickly pulled out her sword and spun around, slicing through the air with a blade so sharp it felt like cutting through nothing—no hesitation, just a blur of motion.
“Ghost···?”
Ryougi Shiki flipped the sword in her hand and stared at the girl in white before her.
The girl vanished into thin air with a flicker of her form.
“Don’t go!” With a heavy step, Ryougi Shiki charged toward where the girl had disappeared.
She hit nothing but air.
The area ahead was empty, and Ryougi Shiki’s eyes burned with a dangerous glow as she tightened her grip on her dagger and climbed higher in the building.
·········
Kokutou Azaka, Asagami Fujino, and Seo Shizune walked together, getting closer to the Fujou Building.
“Oh my god! That’s one of Suicide’s students.” Seo Shizune gasped at the bodies outside the building and quickly ducked behind Kokutou Azaka.
Kokutou Azaka frowned, saying, “This is the seventh one now. If we don’t deal with this, there will only be more victims.”
“Let’s go,” Asagami Fujino said calmly, her tone colder than ever as she glanced at the mutilated corpse on the ground.
The three of them walked into the building together.
The police seal in the first floor had been broken, and a fresh set of footprints led inside.
…… Someone had been here.
The three of them exchanged glances, all sharing the same thought.
They were standing in an old elevator that still worked. Kokutou Azaka pressed the button for the highest floor and watched as the creaking elevator slowly ascended.
The narrow elevator moved upward, swaying slightly with each step, and the atmosphere felt a bit oppressive.
“Something’s off here.” Fujino looked at the elevator, which was covered in graffiti, and said that.
Kokutou Azaka agreed with her. She also felt it too. “Shizune, you’re okay?”
When Kokutou Azaka called out to her, Seo Shizune finally snapped out of her daze and said, “I’m fine, I just saw some strange things.”
“Strange things?”
“Yeah, I saw that girl from the rooftop earlier going into this building. But that’s supposed to be in the past—how am I seeing something from the past?”
Kokutou Azaka ran her fingers over the elevator’s surface and said, “The time here has been distorted. The records inside are slower than outside.”
Ding…
They reached the top.
On the rooftop, Ryougi Shiki stood with a sword, surrounded by floating ghosts—each of them young women wearing white outfits and silently gathered around.
“Ryougi!”
“Azaka?”
They saw each other.
Ryougi Shiki’s gaze swept over the three of them, pausing for a moment on Asagami Fujino before saying with a sigh, “Touko told you not to interfere. Why are you here?”
Kokutou Azaka didn’t expect to see Ryougi Shiki here and retorted, “You’re too slow!”
“Hey? That’s no reason. You’re already coming after her—why bring others in?” Ryougi Shiki glared at Asagami Fujino with a dangerous look. “Hey, Asagami Fujino, you won’t get saved now. Come fight me…”
“Wait!” Kokutou Azaka interrupted Ryougi Shiki, sounding annoyed. “Ryougi, Fujino is my friend—I won’t allow you to lay a hand on her!”
Ryougi Shiki smirked and said, “If you’re going to care about others, at least look after that one over there.”
Kokutou Azaka turned to see Seo Shizune, who seemed like a lost soul, staring blankly toward the edge of the rooftop.
“Shizune!” Kokutou Azaka didn’t bother warning Ryougi Shiki and rushed toward Seo Shizune. A ghost floated over, trying to block her path.
Hey…
The fire intensity increased with the wind, attacking Ghost.
Ghost merely dodged slightly and passed through unscathed, still floating towards her. It was obvious that if Ghost touched her, it wouldn’t end well.
“Damn it, the flame had no effect!” Kokutou Azaka was forced back by Ghost, getting farther away from Seo Shizune, who was nearing the edge of the rooftop. Kokutou Azaka grew more anxious.
If this continued, Seo Shizune would fall to her death. Falling from such a great height would be fatal.
With all his might, Kokutou Azaka kept releasing flames, engulfing the Ghost in a massive fire. Amidst the intense flames, the Ghostly Figure was slowly devoured, turning into a wisp of blue smoke that vanished.
…Flames were not ineffective; they just had a minimal impact on Ghost.
Kokutou Azaka quickly retracted the flames and sprinted along the scorched ground.
Whoosh!
Just as Seo Shizune was about to fall, Kokutou Azaka grabbed her arm, pulling her back.
Kokutou Azaka rolled backward twice, holding Seo Shizune, still shaken and gasping for breath. He then pulled her backward, away from the edge.
[Shizune was under a Suggestion; I need to find the person who gave the Suggestion, or Shizune will still jump to her death.] Kokutou Azaka gently placed Seo Shizune on the ground, stood up, and looked around.
One Ghost had been burned away, leaving eight behind. Among them, one figure caught her attention.
Fixing her gaze on the girl floating highest in the center, Kokutou Azaka narrowed her eyes: I’ve found you.
